subinsebastien··on A case study of Toyota unintended acceleration and software safety (2014) [pdf]
(1) Automotive (2) Medical Devices (3) Aerospace

In my mind, all three are done with more or less similar rigour conforming to strict standards. Yet, exceptions are seen in all of them.

subinsebastien··on 43 km line of sight with USB WiFi stick (2005)
I want this to be part of a Hollywood movie. The protagonist is using his makeshift wifi setup to hack into a bank computer systems 43Km away from his location, and the bank people has no idea what is going on.
subinsebastien··on Ask HN: Show your failed projects and share a lesson you learned
Me and one my acquaintance built a online grocery delivery service from scratch. We launched it in a small tier-3 city in India. It was ahead of time compared to all the services which later became successful. We had things like automated phone number verification as a first in apps launched in India. What we have learned is that:- do not do things that are ahead of it’s time. Launch a mobile app, when pretty much everyone has a smart phone for themselves.
subinsebastien··on Nextspace: a desktop environment that brings a NeXTSTEP look and feel to Linux
I used to call myself an expert iOS user and I didn’t knew this clock trick. I think I’m no more an expert.
subinsebastien··on Gears
Nicely done. Reminds me of https://geargenerator.com/ which I used to build gear systems for fun.
subinsebastien··on Kuo: Apple to include new scissor switch keyboard in MacBook
I have the 13" late 2013 Macbook Pro i7, 8GB. It is working perfectly fine, and as fast as it was on day one. Never replaced a single thing, and never had to do hard-drive wipe. The only problem I have is that, it is a 512GB SSD, and I have no free space left.
subinsebastien··on Pandoc
Yet another pandoc user here. I built a blog engine using Pandoc as the core. Code available here : https://github.com/subinsebastien/kyll And the website built using the blog engine is available here : http://xtel.in/
subinsebastien··on An Update on Last Week’s Accident
Why the car was not able to detect and avoid the collision in such a simple situation (from a human POV)? We have seen Tesla's autopilot performing very well in a much more complex scenario than this. Ref:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FadR7ETT_1k
subinsebastien··on I will work on one project for free
I have not considered open source projects which are in development, since it prevents me from having an opportunity to develop from scratch, also highly likely that I have to use toolchain which the project is already using, as opposed to tools that I'm familiar with.
subinsebastien··on I will work on one project for free
My Qt experience is in developing native desktop applications. I have not used Qt for mobile apps yet.
subinsebastien··on WhatsApp is Down
It is the biggest outage since May 3rd.
subinsebastien··on Ask HN: What do you want to see most in the next iteration of the Macbook Pro?
To conclude all

- Magnetic-USB-C OR Magsafe power connector on both sides

- Remove touch bar

- A lot more battery life, even if the MBP is a little more thicker

- A cutting edge silicon lottery intel processor, ideally Xeon

- Face ID

- Super Retina OLED Display

- Inverted T cursor block (arrow keys)

- A powerful GPU

- Multi-boot support for Linux also

- At least 32GB Ram

- Fast charging

People like us makes a living out of these machines. We are not here to "getting used to" all the shit Apple produces.

subinsebastien··on [dead]
How and why did he plan such a thing?
subinsebastien··on Google Site Search will be completely shut down by April 1, 2018
Wow, that was a thorough testing.
subinsebastien··on Ask HN: What're the best-designed things you've ever used?
The Nexus Prime. I have been using this particular mobile phone for so long, because of its clean physical design and stock Android experience. https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-I9250-Galaxy-Nexus-Unlocked/d...
subinsebastien··on My CAD software called home, and no-one answered, so it shut down
The OP explains in a later comment that, he used a floppy-disk based licensing system in the early days of this software.
subinsebastien··on My personal fight against the modern laptop [video]
I really liked the fluid looking UI, the bulb-like window control buttons and the nice glass effects. Modern macOS GUI is not that interesting or nice to work with.

subinsebastien··on Let's start using DuckDuckGo more often
May be use DDG as the primary search enigne, and switch to Google when you don't get what you want in the first go on DDG. Atleast more traffic to DDG, and hence better results in future.
subinsebastien··on Ask HN: Have you ever thought of leaving programming for something else?
I have been mostly happy with programming in my early days. I’m now 28 years old, and been a programmer for the past 5 years. I mostly code Android apps, and sometimes server side code in Node/ExpressJS. For the past 1-2 years, I really want to change my career into more unique/niche fields of engineering. Programming, as I see it now, does not need a computer science degree or any degree at all, to do effectively. And people from other domains are getting into programming, and doing it a lot better than I do. I considered getting trained in Industrial Automation (PLC/SCADA/LABVIEW) and get into more mission critical domains, where I can work with lot of other Engineering domains as well. Another option I consider is to go for a masters in a niche engineering field. But as I analysed my thoughts, what I really (really) want is a unique engineering job, where the entry barrier for others is high. I don't have any idea if I could be a success in the new field. To conclude.

  - Programming is boring after a number of years
  - Programming is more of an art-form rather than engineering
  - Entry barrier for programming is low, so you don’t have to be an engineer to do programming
  - Your programming skills plateau after a certain age
  - Your engineering mindset will be lost if continued in certain type of programming jobs.
subinsebastien··on Ask HN: What are the best personal project websites you've seen?
Couldn't agree more.
subinsebastien··on Ask HN: What are the best personal project websites you've seen?
I personally built a small blog engine, with a subset of features from Jekyll, which can generate blog posts and home page out of markdown. It was definitely a project on its own.
subinsebastien··on Ask HN: What are the best personal project websites you've seen?
This looks decent
subinsebastien··on [dead]
They try to explain what they are doing with a so called "Explainer Video", which immediately disproves their business model, that I just wanted a few lines of text rather than an awkward sounding video.
subinsebastien··on Splix.io
In one minute, I had to force Quit chrome on my mac.
subinsebastien··on AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region
Do you have the same for Singapore region. (to compare latency)
subinsebastien··on Blackbird, a car rig that creates photo-real CG cars [video]
It took me a while to pause the video at the exact spot.
subinsebastien··on Show HN: Phone verification at no cost
Again, nothing new. I have already implemented this on my app here : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.xtel.quitq.... using Twilio alone. But, twilio is not completely free.
subinsebastien··on India Launches Unified Payment Interface API
Either way, this venture has high significance, because, the RBI imposed restrictions were severely hampering the usability of online payments, for both the consumers as well as sellers in India.
subinsebastien··on WebTorrent Desktop – Open source streaming torrent client
The website is so beautiful, I want to bookmark it.
