subhrm··on Saving a Million People from a Cyclone
I am a resident of Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha, India . We are currently bearing the brunt of Cyclone Fani. The wind speed was phenomenal , comparable to the super cyclone of 1999.

Even after 48 hours the city is in dark.

But thanks to proactive steps of the govt agencies the casualty number is much less than that of '99s.

subhrm··on An ancient engineering feat that harnessed the wind
Yes. I could see the images on my mobile browser. The very aggressive corporate proxy was probably blocking the images on my work machine.
subhrm··on An ancient engineering feat that harnessed the wind
The article has no photograph of the "badgir" (wind catcher). I had to search and see a few photographs to appreciate the design.

subhrm··on Elemental Haiku

There's no shame in it. Advertising pays the bills. Stop looking so red.

subhrm··on Ask HN: What tech that's right around the corner are you most excited about?
I am excited about both WebGL & Web assembly.

Although both of these have been around for a few years, we are yet to see a general adaptation of these. (might be due to inconsistent browser support).

Now with the rise of VR, 3d Printing, powerful GPUs these two technologies are bound to open new avenues of an immersive browsing experience. I imagine that in next few years we would have 1- Webs stores, that show a virtual 3d shopping mall, 2- 3-d virtual try out of garments, 3- VR coaching of physical activities like a- Playing Tennis, b- Judo, c-Taecondo, d- Dance

subhrm··on Not Everyone in Tech Cheers the H-1B Visa Program
I was a part of the Infosys offshore team (India) that took the transition from Eversource energy's IT department (mentioned in the article).

I clearly remember now, how disappointed, sad and gloomy were the members of the departing team.
