streeter··on Ask HN: Who Is Hiring? (June 2012)
Educreations (http://www.educreations.com) - Full Time or Intern in Palo Alto, CA

Want to help solve an important problem? We are looking for extraordinary people who want to make a difference solving immensely challenging problems for an industry in need of innovative solutions. If you’ve ever wanted to use your technical skills and other talents as a force for good, here’s your chance.

We’ve made it extremely easy to teach online. We think that it should take someone five minutes to create a five minute lesson, and it is a principle that has guided us along the way. Teachers and students love what we have built and use our app and website every day. We were part of the first cohort of Imagine K12 and are looking to grow the team rapidly.

We are looking to make our first hires. If you want to change the world and are a strong Python hacker, have experience with Objective C or are an awesome designer, we want to talk to you.

We are looking for:

    Full-stack Engineer (Python)

streeter··on Collusion - iPad pen productivity solved
This looks to be exactly like another iPad stylus on Kickstarter called the iPen [1]. It's funding was successful in December.

streeter··on Choosing an API framework for Django
django-tastypie is nice and new, but it does not yet handle file uploads natively [1] which is why I went with django-piston for my project.

There is plans to support file uploads, but this was a deal breaker for my API.

streeter··on Ask HN: Who Is Hiring? (May 2012)
Educreations (http://www.educreations.com) - Full Time or Intern in Palo Alto, CA

Educreations is the easiest way for teachers to teach online. We're growing fast, and have a crazy awesome iPad app that hit the #1 spot after 4 days in the app store. We're unabashidly inspired by the Khan Academy but want to enable all teachers to teach like Sal Khan. We were part of the first cohort of Imagine K12 and are looking to grow the team rapidly.

We are looking to make our first hires. If you want to change the world and are a strong Python hacker, have experience with Objective C or are an awesome designer, we want to talk to you.

We are looking for:

    Lead Software Engineer (Python)
    Lead Mobile Engineer (Objective C/Cocoa)
    Lead UX/UI Designer
streeter··on Galaxy Nexus now on sale in Google Play
The lack of Google Wallet on the VZW is not because of a carrier restriction. It's a hardware issue with the VZW CDMA model of the phone.
streeter··on Django Settings for Production and Development: Best Practices
Environment variables work extremely well when deploying on Heroku [1]. You can't exactly commit a local_settings.py file to your repo, so setting env variables is the only way to exclude sensitive keys and passwords from your source control.

streeter··on Django Settings for Production and Development: Best Practices
I do something similar with Chef. Chef creates a local_settings.py file that outputs python with the server ips and ports for the various services.
streeter··on Imagine K12 Graduates Its First Class of Ed-Tech Startups
There is also the large markets of tutoring and online learning. Not to mention the huge market that is higher education.
streeter··on Can’t Wait (YC S11) is a mobile social network for movie trailers
I was thinking the same thing.

Edit:

Also, Convore was launched in YC W11. So this transition must have happened a while ago.

streeter··on Chromebooks on sale at Amazon for $349
Though the iPhone uses a YouTube app, which isn't the web. The allure of the Chromebook is that it can play the whole web, and YouTube is a big part of that. YouTube does have html5 video, but it is still in beta and isn't available for all videos. And it is opt-in.

In addition, with the focus on enterprise and education, I believe that Chromebooks had to support flash as a requirement.

streeter··on Chromebooks on sale at Amazon for $349
The fact that Google owns the most popular flash site on the internet (YouTube), probably helped with their decision to include Flash.
streeter··on Redesigning TechCrunch: We Picked This Logo Just to Piss You Off
Good thing I only read TC in a feed reader. Then I don't have to actually visit the site anymore.
streeter··on Awesome Python and django related projects
I tested out the class based views in Django 1.3, but decided that I didn't like the complexity that all the MixIns added. I was constantly having to remember which things each MixIn added to my class. I found it simpler to just do function based views with several decorators.
streeter··on Awesome Python and django related projects
How did django-annoying (https://bitbucket.org/offline/django-annoying) not make the list? I find the stuff in django-annoying to be crucial on any Django project I do (the render_to() and @ajax_request decorators especially).
streeter··on Google+ scores your relationships with your friends
But Facebook doesn't expose this anyway. Google has at least shown signs that it has or will use this data (I'm thinking of the 'Did you mean Dave' or 'Did you forget Dave' feature in Gmail). Thats where the really cool stuff can happen. Especially if they let you auto-add people to Circles.
streeter··on Google Calendar has a new look
It is like there is 10 years of pent-up design at Google that has been released all in the last week.
streeter··on Sal Khan has started videos about Python
It is really cool that Sal is trying to do everything himself, but this method does not scale. There is no way he can create the breadth, and more importantly, the depth, needed to cover all the topics a student will learn. As long as Sal continues to produce all the content himself, I believe the Khan Academy will be relegated to complementary and supplementary content.
streeter··on GitHub for Mac
This is huge, because for many people, the current interface to git is the command line, which is too much for people who want GUIs. Yes, there are other GUIs out there, but those are not controlled by GitHub. In this case, they did something very similar to what Google did with Chrome; they wanted to provide a consistent and predictable end-to-end solution for users so they built their own desktop app.

It also does not hurt that the app defaults to use GitHub, though it does seem like you can use remotes that are not GitHub (see repository -> Settings).

streeter··on Ask HN: Education-focused start-ups?
Imagine K12 has 10 companies in the current cohort: http://techcrunch.com/2011/06/16/education-incubator-imagine...
streeter··on Ask HN: Is their any large scale, real life Node.js app?
Learnboost (http://learnboost.com/) is using Node.js and is an active contributor to node projects on Github (https://github.com/learnboost).
streeter··on Ask HN: Why do YC-backed companies post anonymous job postings?
This allows the companies to control their own PR rather than let the media control the PR for them. A smart move and one that is recommended by YC.
streeter··on We're five members of the Google Docs team - ask us anything
This was already announced during the Google I/O 2011 keynote. It seems prudent now that Chromebooks are going to be shipping.
streeter··on Ask HN: Are ImagineK12 invites out yet?
Yes. See http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2538550
streeter··on Google App Engine for Go
GvR mentioned today at Google I/O that the Go runtime was championed by another group within Google. Apparently, the same thing happened with the Java runtime before it was brought into the App Engine team. He expected the same thing to happen with the Go runtime. So one would expect new features to come to the Go runtime slightly after the other "first class" runtimes (Python and Java).

streeter··on Solarized - Color scheme for vim, mutt, terminal emulators
Yes, the directions are on GitHub:

https://github.com/altercation/solarized/tree/master/osx-ter...

Once you've activated that theme in Terminal.app's preferences, all your colors in the shell will use the colors defined in the colorscheme. So red will be the red in the colorscheme, blue -> blue, etc.
