str33t_punk··on “About one-third of Basecamp employees accepted buyouts today”
In my experience that has never happened

Usually its a bunch of people advocating for socialism, screaming silence is violence, and saying white people are going to hell

From what I've seen (maybe this is just the bay area) you don't usually know someone is conservative until they trust you lol

str33t_punk··on Cryptography behind the top cryptocurrencies
You can but only really one will have value

There are crypto punks on Binance / Tron but they are pretty worthless. Everyone knows which one is the real one

For most projects that go multi chain it’s all about wrapping. I.e the main item is on ETH but they are wrapped when on other chains.

str33t_punk··on Metakovan, the mystery Beeple art buyer, and his NFT/DeFi scheme
Hey — don’t listen to these clowns. They are upset because all they do is make enterprise widgets for a megacorp and memorize leetcode. Most software engineers in megacorps are incredible risk adverse (similar to doctors and others who follow a path) and are pretty salty they missed the boat.

IMO the most interesting problems in computer science are happening in crypto. Especially if you are interested in cryptography or distributed systems. Way more interesting than making some web app ‘scale’ with the same formula everyone uses

str33t_punk··on Metakovan, the mystery Beeple art buyer, and his NFT/DeFi scheme
Game theory? Distributed systems? Cryptography?

The technical challenges in crypto are much more interesting than that of a FANG company’s (i.e enterprise software and widgets)

str33t_punk··on Coinbase announces confidential submission of draft registration statement
True retail is mostly on CEX's. Folks on DEX's are mainly power users.

Also there are two reasons why DEX's have high volume: - Long tail of assets are only on DEX's. Average retail isn't buying these - DEFI protocols utilize DEXs. I would argue most of the volume isn't people trading, rather automatic trading to support protocols like Yearn.finance

str33t_punk··on Silicon Valley Elite Discuss Journalists Having Too Much Power in Private App
This article employs the same malicious cropping Taylor Lorenz did that made people so mad. I think the origin story is not that she complained about the CEO of Away, it was that when Balaji copied her exact wording, she cropped out the origin picture that showed this and claimed harassment.

Journalists seem incredibly tone deaf -- do they ever wonder why people dislike them? It's because they employ so many subtle lies like this all the time.

Journalists really need to get off twitter - it ruins their credibility. If this is how they act for some crap drama, it calls into question all sorts of 'important' articles and op-eds

str33t_punk··on Zoom closes account of U.S.-based Chinese activist after Tiananmen event
It is funny that Alex Stamos works there.

After all his morale handwringing about working for Facebook, he is now working for Zoom, a Chinese Communist Party spy operation. Not only does he work for them, his job is to shill them so that people trust them.

He should feel ashamed of himself and really makes his whole situation with Facebook seem quite silly. He is now actually working for the 'bad guys'

str33t_punk··on Japan to fund firms to shift production out of China
One reason people don’t trust China’s aid is that the shortage is caused by China.

They bought up the worlds supply of PPE (over 2 billion masks) and nationalized factories owned by foreign companies (such as 3m) so their masks produced stay internal.

It’s almost as if I cornered the food market and then when people were starving I start selling them food but disguising it as a loving donation. People can see through that

str33t_punk··on Edward Snowden book coming out Sept. 17
What I find interesting is that my opinions on Edward Snowden have drastically changed over time.

When the leaks first came out, I regarded him as a hero, for exposing what the US Government was doing. At this time my view of the world was extremely America centric, where all other countries were pretty powerless and the US was the only one doing such deeds. I think this view was fairly naive.

In the last decade my thinking has changed. After seeing that Russia, China, many EU countries, Iran, and Israel have similar programs and are also weaponizing the internet, I've come to think of Edward Snowden as a traitor. It is not just the US doing these things, everyone is. He exposed the US's tools and has weakened the US's security position immensely. Countries like China and Russia are gaining in this new battlefield, and what advantage the US had has was lost with Snowden. It is now more like if he leaked the schematics of US weapons to Russia during the cold war. I find it telling as well that he fled to Russia.

I find many people have had a similar turn of opinion with Julian Assange. Perhaps it is because Geo Politics has simply gotten more confusing -- it does seem that America is no longer the 'World Police'

But on the other hand, he did wake up Americans to the concept of security. Once the cat was out of the bag that everyone was being spied on, and that governments have the power to breach systems, it seems that people have come to care more about these matters. I would say this a good thing

He is definitely a very interesting topic

str33t_punk··on Hong Kong’s protesters use AirDrop to spread information to mainland visitors
The CIA definitely was not behind Tiananmen square and there is no way it could be behind a two million person strong protest...

Conspiracy theory is one of the strongest forms of propaganda. Alex Jones is dumb but effective. It’s a slippery slope before you start blaming the Jews for everything.

str33t_punk··on How to Ace the Google Interview: Ultimate Guide
I hate these style of interviews. I give them to prospective engineers every week for one of these FAANGM companies.

They don't test for good engineers -- they test for people who practice these style interviews, and for good new graduates.

It makes sense to ask these questions to new grads, but afterwards there is so much more experience that I feel like is much more important than acing data structures questions.

I am amazing at whiteboard questions, but that doesn't make me a good engineer. It's because I found the trick to solving these, and have practiced them. A lot of it it is practice 'ooo this looks like a graph problem, let me use a graph', etc.

str33t_punk··on Facebook, Instagram go down around the world in an apparent outage
As someone who works at a large company in the networking space, you would be surprised that minor changes to configuration can cause catastrophic failures that are really challenging to come back from

Network failures are usually really bad when your system is globally deployed and distributed -- often times you can't even communicate with your machines to deliver fixes :p

str33t_punk··on Facebook, Instagram go down around the world in an apparent outage
Both companies are massive and have tons of developers. It becomes almost impossible to look at the system as a whole with the amount of changes coming through. And, you get scenarios where small failures cascade through the stack reaking havok. Often times its just one config change

Its telling that one of the hottest areas of distributed systems research these days is the boring topic of configuration management. Google, Microsoft, etc are paying researchers top dollar to figure out how to prevent massive outages through novel techniques. It is one of the harder problems to solve and requires massive investment in tooling, refactoring, etc.

str33t_punk··on Biography of Christopher “moot” Poole: The Hacker Known as “4chan”
The romanticism comes from the fact that 4chan has been incredibly influential in internet history.

Chaos is a ladder, as they say in GOT, and some of the best content out there has come from 4chan.

The lack of identity and point system also brings out some of the most interesting conversation. I recommend checking out /mu or /lit (/b, /pol/, and /r9k are all containment boards). If you contrast the conversation on /mu and /lit with similar reddit boards (r/music - or even spin offs like r/hiphopheads - and r/books) you will find much more interesting and original content. I find the point system on reddit lends itself much closer to a 'hivemind' where everyone ends up conforming to the same opinion, which makes things boring

str33t_punk··on The Juul Fad Is Bigger I Would Have Guessed
I was a nic addict for several years. Most of the time it was spliffs (weed mixed with nicotine) but my consumption rate was probably the equivalent of 4-5 cigs a day (8 king size spliffs per day). I also smoked here and there but I didn’t like the taste or throat hit as much.

After having a prolonged cough, I switched to juuling. I loved it - tasted great, nice buzz, amazing (AMAZING) throat hit. I stopped smoking spliffs (positive was I was no longer high 24-7), my lungs felt better, I overall felt better.

However, the issue with these things is it is so available. You can take tiny rips anywhere. And there is no quantized amount. You just take a few puffs but you have no idea how much that is, unlike a discrete cig. So my 4-5 cig a day habit turned into the equivalent of a pack a day habit. I found myself ‘going to the bathroom’ all the time at work to sneak a quick hit. I think my base level anxiety went up.

So I quit the juul (quitting wasn’t as hard as I thought despite using a pod a day for 6 months, the anxiety of what would happen when I quit was really the big thing. In terms of withdrawals all I had was a desire to consume nic on my mind all the time for a few days).

Really what I want to say is that the juul is a better cig. You can use it anywhere. You feel much less terrible and sickly (when your smoking you couch all the time). It tastes much better. However all of this makes it much more addicting than the traditional cigarette

The science is out on how bad for you vaping is. Many point to the fact that nicotine by itself is really only bad for your heart - the extra stuff is more from smoke / chemicals in cigarettes. However nicotine addiction kinda sucks

str33t_punk··on China’s Economy Slows Sharply
Your 'observation' doesn't seem to match reality.

From what I have read, China has had a huge increase in household debt over the last few years. Perhaps five years ago there where not many Chinese people living with debt, but that is no longer the case. Some have even been calling it a credit bubble

Random article about this I googled: https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2018-02-15/chines...

In other regards, I have read about the Chinese Economy slow down in non American sources, such as the Economist. However, I will agree that I see it the most in US media (the WSJ seems to have a pretty negative outlook on the Chinese Economy right now)

str33t_punk··on Second Canadian 'missing' in China
I'm not arguing for or against Iran sanctions. However, they exist, and the US has a history of enforcing such sanctions. Getting around sanctions is typically given large punishments (see the Movie 'War Dogs'). This is not some arrest on trumped up charges for 'national security' like the Chinese arrest

The fact of the matter is that there is strong evidence that Huawei committed fraud to breach US sanctions. This is neither a 'good' or 'bad' thing, it is just very illegal.

str33t_punk··on Second Canadian 'missing' in China
We still don't know why they have been arrested. The only reason that China has given was they were 'endangering national security'. Seeing that they use this reason every time they want to arrest a dissident, it seems like a random arrest.
str33t_punk··on Second Canadian 'missing' in China
China is making themselves look horrible here.

Ms. Meng has a proper reason for being arrested (the allegations are that she committed fraud to bypass US sanctions against Iran and sell them US tech by lying about HuaWei and SkyComs involvement to HSBC). There will be a trial, this investigation has been happening for years, and it is by the Justice Department, not a request from Trump (who seems to have been caught surprised by the move). Canada didn't do anything, they are simply honoring their extradition treaties.

In contrast, China is just throwing a fit in response and arresting random Canadians on trumped up charges. These are clearly politically motivated (China had threatened Canada with 'consequences' -- the timing is way too suspect here). We have been given no reason why they have been detained, and there are no court hearings or anything -- they have just been 'disappeared'. With this move, China has shown how authoritarian and anti business they are. No justice department, no investigation. These are simply political hostages. Further more, it is completely spineless that they are going after the, less powerful, Canadian nationals, and not Americans.

str33t_punk··on Canada has arrested Huawei’s global chief financial officer in Vancouver
I disagree.

Take Arms. Lets say the US has an arms embargo with a country like Iran. You would agree that it definitely is a violation (and it would be of many international treaties) to purchase US arms as a Hong Kong (replace with whatever country) firm and then resell them to Iran. Now, with computers being the next front of warfare, computer tech is treated similar to arms.

The whole movie 'War Dogs' is about people doing this with Soviet Arms, repackaging them, and selling them to the US. It was illegal, hence they got locked up at the end

This guy has it.

I used to vape around the equivalent of a pack a day. It helped me with my adhd.

I ended up stopping when I learned that getting up and going to vape in the bathroom constantly was becoming an even greater distraction than my own mind.
