stox··on Docker on FreeBSD
Docker runs on top of lxc if I am not mistaken.
stox··on New Horizons: Nasa spacecraft speeds past Pluto
There is such a thing as constructive competition vs destructive competition. Sadly, some do not know the difference.
stox··on MasterCard to start verifying transactions through selfies
The next step will be to embed smart phones in children at birth. I guess "The President's Analyst" was more prescient than we gave it credit for.
stox··on IBM System 38 (1984) [pdf]
A predecessor of the AS/400, the System/36 PC was available in very similar chassis to the IBM AT. It used an IBM 5150 ( aka PC ) as the console with a special interface card.
stox··on IBM System 38 (1984) [pdf]
A lot of this goes back to the System/3, which was released in 1969.

System/3 => System 32 => System 36 => System 38 => AS/400 => iSeries.

stox··on SpaceX – Launch Vehicle Failure
So honey, how was the launch today?

We had a blast!

I think UNIX-RTR has met those goals.
stox··on EFF and Eight Other Privacy Orgs Back Out of NTIA Face Recognition Talks
Actually, you can change the dimensions of your face. It is very painful, and I do not recommend it to anyone voluntarily.
stox··on Why Go is doomed to succeed
Go is simply the follow on to Limbo. It is the product of many years of experience supporting the construction of large systems. Most of its roots are from Bell Labs.
stox··on Why the US federal employee record breach is worse than others
There was only one truly secure system, but then the Big Bang happened.

For those in the States interesting in finding Club Mate: http://club-mateusa.com/
stox··on Sir Christopher Lee dies at 93
He was a cousin of Ian Fleming and one of the inspirations for James Bond. What a remarkable man!
stox··on Moog Music Gives Employees More Control
Brilliant! A great move to re-establish to covenant between employers and employees. A clear acknowledgement of how important the employees are to the company. I hope they do outrageously well with this.
stox··on What happened with your Internet last night, and what we are doing about it
If my recent experiences with them in regards to DNS is any indicator, their DNS infrastructure is a colossal joke. 4 days to get a reverse DNS entry done? Really?

I wont even mention the typos in some of their SOA records.

stox··on BSD Unix: Power to the people, from the code (2000)
If it wasn't for USL vs BSDi, we probably wouldn't have Linux today, and BSD would be ruling the world.
stox··on New PayPal policy opts you into getting robocalls
Welcome to the voice menu from Hell. We used to do that with AT&T Voice Power cards back in the day.
stox··on How Much Do Skyscrapers Actually Move?
I used to work on the 97th floor of the Sears Tower. On a really windy day, we would get downright seasick.
stox··on Iowa Spent $50M to Lure IBM. Then the Firings Started
Cloud, as in Blowing Smoke.
stox··on Under the hood: Facebook’s cold storage system
In this environment, the power cycles are going to be less stressful than typical, as you won't see the degree of thermal cycling you do in a hot chassis. I'd love to see what the data says a year out.
stox··on Tesla battery storage will accelerate exit of coal generators
Per unit of heat generated, natural gas produces about half the CO2 of coal.

That is already a big win.

stox··on Dave Goldberg, CEO of SurveyMonkey, has died
I picked up a full Rad working at a nuke. No tumors yet.
stox··on Integer Overflow Bug in Boeing 787 Dreamliner
Coming soon: OTA updates for Boeing aircraft. What could possibly go wrong?
stox··on Mark Zuckerberg appears on CNBC to discuss a social network (2004) [video]
And thus began the fall of Western civilization...
stox··on China rates its own citizens – including online behaviour
Can you say Acxiom? I knew you could.
stox··on HP-01 wrist instrument, 1977
They were big, heavy, and needed batteries too often. Expensive, too. They are retro-chic now, though. A good specimen will cost you north of $1K.
stox··on 3,000 floppy disk archive (1982–1994)
Better not tell my 8" disks.
stox··on The Fuck – Correct your previous console command
BTW, all of those commands are from the original BSD c-shell. Bash developers knew a good thing when they saw it.
stox··on The Steady Rise of Bike Ridership in New York
This is great news! I was one of the people who painted the first bike lane down 5th Avenue back in the late 1970's. I see that Transportation Alternatives is still alive and well.
stox··on Large-scale cluster management at Google with Borg
I wonder if disruptive jobs are named Hugh?
stox··on Nokia Agrees to Buy Alcatel-Lucent for $16.6B
