stormcode··on Princeton Cuts Short Controversial 'Secret Shopper' Privacy Study
I'm glad they cut this short. If I had gotten one of these emails for a blog or non profit I was part of it would have stressed me out too. You gotta do research into the law, understand your exposure and possibly start reaching out to lawyer friends for help or an actual lawyer you have to pay for what amounts to a research study. I read the email they were sending. It was pretty forceful.
stormcode··on I was part of a human subject research study without my consent
Completely agree here. There was no reason the people running this couldn't have been clear about what they were doing and why up front. I've dealt with GDPR requests before and it is a hassle. Especially when someone does it for the purposes of causing that hassle.
stormcode··on Better.com CEO fires 900 employees on Zoom call
I dunno. Seems clearly abusive to me from someone in a position of power. This wasn't said among friends at a bar or by or about someone unrelated to the people in question. It was their boss, or bosses boss.
stormcode··on Better.com CEO fires 900 employees on Zoom call
Yes, in my opinion it is. Think about abuse in other contexts to put it in perspective. If a teacher in the middle of giving a homework assignment had said the same thing, would that be okay? What about a police officer who pulled someone over during a traffic stop? What about a customer at a drive thru saying this into the speaker?

This is not a random person on the street corner shouting at other random passers by. This guy is in a position of power over the people he is communicating with.

stormcode··on A&W Turns its 'Worst Marketing Fail' Into a New Burger, Launches 3/9lb sandwich

stormcode··on A&W Turns its 'Worst Marketing Fail' Into a New Burger, Launches 3/9lb sandwich
This is delightful.
stormcode··on Bashcrawl: Learn Linux commands by playing a simple text adventure
Reminds me a little of one of the games built into emacs... You ftp around and do other stuff that teaches you commands. Not positive, might be called dunnet.
stormcode··on Statement from Mark Zuckerberg
I got to the fifth insurance of'industry leading' and had to stop reading. The general sentiment recorded makes sense but the language used at various points reads as if it were run through a PR ML bot.
stormcode··on What does my engineering manager do all day?
That's why I'm suggesting you take control and turn the meeting into what you want it to be. It doesn't have to be a checklist but it sounds like you -have- to have this meeting at the company you are at. So instead of suffering through it, you can turn it into something beneficial for you. Ya know?
stormcode··on What does my engineering manager do all day?
Take it into your own hands. It's your time. Bring stuff to it. You won't always have an amazing manager, but you can get a lot out of it if you are proactive IMO.

Also, I think all managers should be asking what cadence and length of time their directs want for 1:1.

The least would be 30 minutes bi-weekly IMO.

The most would be 1 hour weekly.

Depends on the person, the projects, where they are in their career, etc.

stormcode··on What does my engineering manager do all day?
100% agree. If you are a manager, dont cancel 1:1s unless it is a legit emergency. if someone schedules over it, tell them you cant do it because you have a 1:1 and you dont reschedule those. These are the most important meetings on a managers calendar. any org that treats them differently will not be as successful and employees will not feel as supported, as they could be.
stormcode··on What does my engineering manager do all day?
I think in general you'll get out what you put in. 1:1 should be your time, your agenda. If it's a status meeting it's being done wrong. If you aren't setting the agenda and bringing things to talk about, goals to discuss, questions, etc. I think you are missing out. If your manager isn't pushing you to bring those things (many don't, but should) take it into your own hands. Shows that you own your development plan, and that is always a plus.
stormcode··on DoS attacks against my online game
Some people are just not great. It sucks. This kind of thing saps the energy from the devs and makes it a job instead of a hobby.
stormcode··on DoS attacks against my online game
They mention attempting it in the post. It didn't go anywhere one time, as it was a minor, and the other they don't have anything to tie the attack to a person. This is a pretty common problem for small games/services that experience outsized problems like this. It's incredibly time consuming to deal with and legal action typically costs money. If you want to go after someone and you think you know who it is you need a lawyer and you need to get a case into discovery so you can get a lawyer subpoena power to contact ISPs and such. Even if you have their real IP-- reporting to police, or ISP can result in no action, even if you put in a lot of work.
stormcode··on Book review: The Checklist Manifesto
agreed. i read this book on recommendation several years ago and felt it could be distilled in a blog post and i probably would have gotten more out of it.
stormcode··on Fencers Refused to Fight. Then Came the Rule That Changed the Sport
Watched some Saber bouts this Olympics and they still seem so fast as to be unfun to watch. At least for more than one or two in a row (so 5 min). Maybe I'm just used to watching Epee and Foil. I totally get why they changed the rule.

Reminds me of anime where two swordmasters do their super special move and you don't find out who won until the loser levels over. Except over and over.

stormcode··on Fencers Refused to Fight. Then Came the Rule That Changed the Sport
It's a really great rule change that has made top tier epee fencing a lot more interesting to watch.
stormcode··on The Amazon 'Personal Games' Policy
disagree. have read many things handed to me by a lawyer, and typos and inconsistencies are something I have found regularly.
stormcode··on HBO Max accidentally sent an integration email test to users
Oof. I think there are two types of engineers in the world. Those that have done something like this, and those that will someday do something like this.

stormcode··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
Some apartments you can't open the front door or the smoke will set off the whole building. You also have a harder time turning off fire alarms since the building doesn't want people disabling them as they are all entwined.
stormcode··on Whimsical Guide to Compensation
I love the idealism here. I am very much in favor of transparency in wages and in setting a salary and saying this is where you start. It reminds me of that car company where the price was the price and you didn't have to negotiate. Saturn, I think?

I, like others who have posted, am unclear on how this is a merit based system. If everyone started at the same place and then you allowed for merit based increases to salary, I think this system would function better in the long run-- though it would definitely have introduced bias.

It sounds like a 'we sink or swim together' company. That can be a good thing. It can also be a bad thing. Like a codependent relationship. You end up working like crazy while someone else rests, knowing there is no additional compensation at the end of the rainbow-- unless you are promoted.

Thank you, I needed that laugh.
stormcode··on Multi-User Dungeons (MUDs): What Are They? and How to Play
MUDs (MOOs specifically) were super formative for me. Learned to code from playing with LambdaMOO and helping develop Sindome (www.sindome.org)

If anyone is interested in a modern / updated LamdaMOO server check out ToastStunt: https://github.com/lisdude/toaststunt

stormcode··on Ex-Stadia developers dish on Google’s mismanagement and poor communication
It isn't cancel culture to call out Google making poor decisions and not planning well and then doing what everyone was worried, vocally, they would do, which was pull the plug. Did you read the article? No one is canceling Google.
stormcode··on Banned in Boston
Just picked up Naked Lunch which appears to have been one of the last books banned in Boston. Read the first chapter and wow is it a strange ride so far.
stormcode··on Terraria on Stadia cancelled after developer's Google account gets locked
Absurd but not new. Equifax was charging people to freeze their credit for a while after the breach, until public pressure mounted.

They probably made a TON of money off of that, and off the credit protection services they offer directly or through subsidiaries.

stormcode··on Robinhood now has a 1-Star rating on the Google Play Store
Yes, to a point, the 'internet is free'. But you are sort of twisting the point a bit I think. Not only does it cost money to have a website in many cases, but to be close to 'free' in terms of what you can post the theoretical person you are referring to needs to run their own web server, and their own DNS server, and hopefully they don't expect to need a domain name...

Otherwise, it is not in fact free. Registrars can take your domain (look what is happening to eu domains owned by UK folx) and web hosts, are in part responsible for the content they host and can refuse to continue to do business with you.

Hell, even if you roll your own setup, the ISP you use can still choose not to do business with you, leaving your entire setup offline.

stormcode··on Radio users reminded not to use radios in crimes
Agreed. I've had two $25 baofengs for camping / outdooring for... Four or five years. Both work fine. They don't see a ton of use but they have been banging around camping bins and glove boxes for that time.

Batteries hold their charge well.

Bonus-- they have FM radios. Weirdly the only thing in my house powered by batteries that does!
