storf45··on Verizon down for users across the US
Same thing happened to my wife. My phone was fine but she was worried something had happened to hers as it was SOS only. I had her go to the Verizon store which is where they told her about the outage.
storf45··on Why lead is still bad for your brain
That's awesome and congrats on the success so far! Smart move on the lead precautions. I need to get some of the wipes for my bag!
storf45··on Why lead is still bad for your brain
I’ve more recently have gotten into competition shooting and it is definitely something to be aware of because it can easily slip into concerning exposure levels. A Reddit group I’m in just had a guy find out he was over exposed. Here’s the post:

storf45··on FTC Sues Prescription Drug Middlemen for Artificially Inflating Insulin Prices
Why did it take so long for the FTC to go after the PBMs? They’ve been responsible for the lack of healthcare pricing transparency and shady incentives for years.

storf45··on Executions of the conceivably innocent are no better than human sacrifice
Work to advocate for the elimination of the death penalty in your state and support groups like the Innocence Project are small but actionable steps.
storf45··on Physical fitness and risk of mental disorders in children and adolescents
Doesn't 'home life' depend on the parent's emphasis on physical activity, sports, or general fitness? I.e. if the parents put a higher value on other things, it seems likely that the children will follow their lead.

Isn’t that how Spirit became a standalone company?
storf45··on United finds loose bolts on plug doors during 737 Max 9 inspections
From when I worked as an engineer on the assembly line for smaller jets, know that there would be a record trail of exactly who completed the work, who signed off on it and what the work order steps were for anything related to these assemblies and components. This would include the work done at Boeing and their suppliers. Will be interesting to ultimately hear the root cause here.
storf45··on Website search hurts my feelings
Thanks for the recommendations! I also work on a decently large ecom site and search experience is a difficult problem - especially in aftermarket automotive.
storf45··on US spent more on health care in 2022 than 6 countries combined with universal
I thought ‘The Price We Pay’ by Marty Makary was a great way to dive into some of the reasons of how expensive and complex the US Healthcare system is. Here’s a quick summary of the book: https://alijiwani1.medium.com/summary-of-the-price-we-pay-4b...
storf45··on Helen Toner shares her side
from the article, the paragraph right before it explained how she got on the board:

"In 2019, she spent nine months in Beijing studying its AI ecosystem. When she returned, Toner helped establish a research organization at Georgetown University, called the Center for Security and Emerging Technology, where she continues to work."

storf45··on In illinois, a warden tried to fix an abusive prison
Can you speak more to what balance is needed? Not being able to terminate bad actors severely impacts the ability to improve the situation. The union rep seemed to shift blame throughout out the entire article.

From the article:

Bergami and Whitmore said they also tried to fire an officer who they saw on video throwing away prisoners’ mail, a possible felony. The agency also overruled them in that decision, they said. The bureau did not respond to allegations of staff destroying mail.“How do you root out the bad apples if you're not allowed to terminate those who have been recommended for termination?” Whitmore said. The two former Thomson officials and a current prison employee said the attitude among many guards was reflected by a group who refused to wear their issued uniforms. These officers opted instead for black T-shirts, many with the union logo or the skull logo of The Punisher — a vigilante comic book character popular with far-right groups. They called themselves “The Black Shirt Mafia.”

Also: Seems like they might be looking at lots of staff rotation anyway (union or not): https://www.ourquadcities.com/news/local-news/thomson-prison...

I'm assuming you're familiar with Wayfair vs. South Dakota?
storf45··on Auto industry executives admit electric vehicle plans are in jeopardy
Wouldn’t it also make sense to have a government owned car company to go with this infrastructure? If private companies aren’t willing to aggressively change their fleets to EV this is where the government needs to step in. I’d see it as another version of public transportation.
storf45··on Bank financing and bad urban planning make the retail apocalypse worse
At that point couldn’t the local government use eminent domain and just seize the property? Then build public housing units that benefit all instead of the landlord sitting on a vacant lot.
storf45··on New York Times tech workers to strike this afternoon
Are the engineers having the product managers be the main negotiators with management? Would be interested in what the union mix of representation is and who does what.

storf45··on SVB shows that there are few libertarians in a financial foxhole
I'm proudly libertarian - in fact, we have an explanation for these boom/bust business cycles via https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austrian_business_cycle_theory. Libertarians have criticized cheap/free money for a very long time so it's not surprising that an institution that had to invest excess deposits into 'safe' treasuries is in trouble once interest rates started to rise. There are likely many other banks, company's, and institutions in trouble right now because of operating assumptions build on free/cheap money are invalid.
storf45··on IRS records reveal how the wealthiest avoid income tax
