I know human limitations. I don’t know AGI limtations.

Most humans can not lie all the time. Their true intentions do come out from time to time.

AGI might not have that problem - AGI might hide its true intentions for hundreds of years.

Pretty compatible != compatible.

(I can edit my own script, I would hate if installation instructions for “django” would include “just remove the type hints from the scripts”)

stoperaticless··on Too much efficiency makes everything worse (2022)
Very good characterisation of close, but distinct concepts. (a map of a domain)

If we squint a little, focus on close/far-away instead of same/distinct and s/metric/model/g (because usage of a metric implies a model), we can see how close these things can be.

Optimizing for the wrong metric - becomes “using a wrong model”.

Excessive efficiency - is partially “using a wrong model”, or maybe “good model != perfect model”. We start with good enough model, but after certain threshold we get to experience the difference between “good enough” and “perfect” (aparantly we care about redundancy, but it was not part of our model; so we were using a wrong model)

Overfitting is “finding the wrong model” (I wanted a model for the whole population, got a model only for a sample)

..or if we squint even more and go meta.. overfitting is part of “good model != perfect (meta)model” of modeling. (using sample data is good enough, but not perfect)

P.S. I liked the article. Choice of the title - not so much.

P.P.S. Simplicity of a model is part of meta-model.

That would be a nice thing they could do.

stoperaticless··on Beirut airport bans pagers, walkie-talkies on all flights
Are the models of walkies talkies and pagers known?

Did they use batteries or rechargeable batteries?

I guess one of those might get banned as well.

All versions of python are python.

If lang is not compatible with any of python versions, then the lang isn’t python.

False advertising is not nice. (even if the fineprint clarifies)

Ok. Built in (reasonable) assumption which I was missing - demand decreases very significantly.

Imagine that you know you are the author of that, but also you just woke up with amnesia and are now trying to figure out why you wrote that book and what did you mean there.

Which explanation would you lean on?

very narrow definition of censorship could be: “shot dead, by police because of federal law for saying wrong thing”

Very brosd definition could be: “suppression of speech, public communication, or other information.”

> And it's not exactly censorship, it's people being fired as a consequence

I guess it all depends how picky we are about the definition of the term.

True.

Good thing (glass half full) about clicky-baity version, it forces facebook to take action, because it directly associates their brand with the problem.

stoperaticless··on Small asteroid to hit Earth's atmosphere today
Good point, but I am not ready to concede. (At least not fully)

Important limitation can be earlyness of detection, and equipment delivery/deployment speed, and redirection rate/speed.

Attacker could work with slow equipment deployment and redirection rate (maybe take years), but defender will need certain ratios between detection esrlyness and speedy deployment of equipment to start the deflection.

And if I’m mr Evil, I would pass the commet through some gravity assists to increase the speed - to bring the example closer to the bullet case.

Mixed feelings.

Somebody installs it for him/her-self. Sure, power to you!

Neibhour in non-muslim state installs it for their children: their right, but feels fishy regarding child right to truth.

Very true if 51% is somehow disconnected/shielded from the 49% and power basically never changes sides.

But it is only technically correct, if tyrants regularly agree to cede the power to new tyrant without bloodshed or even a tantrum.

Isn’t it too early to declare anti-US sentiment here?

Challenge one: Could it be that previous commenter touched certain dogma? (One possible definition from Wikipedia: “Dogma, in its broadest sense, is any belief held definitively and without the possibility of reform”)

Challenge two: please try to stretch the definition of “censorship” a bit till you can say that USA has SOME censorship, maybe in disguise. (One possible definition from Wikipedia: “Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication, or other information.”)

(No need to report results or reply / just try the exercise for elasticity of the mind)

BTW. A bit related, hopefully interesting, random fact you did not ask for:

“Freedom” is defined quite differently by people in different countries. While the U.S. often focuses on freedom from government interference, in France, freedom also includes the idea that the government has a role in ensuring social justice and protecting individual rights, and in Baltic countries the freedom usually means freedom from a certain country.

stoperaticless··on Malaysia started mandating ISPs to redirect DNS queries to local servers
Yes.

Change “significantly” to “technically” or at least to “”, and then I will agree with the statement.

stoperaticless··on Small asteroid to hit Earth's atmosphere today
Interception is a different process and usually it is more difficult.

Example of it being different process: bullets are accelerated by gun powder, but stopped by various armor.

Example of increased dificulty: interception rockets have higher demands on speed and agility. (If somebody tries to evade, you have to be faster)

Imagine ”facebook kills children” title, where article clarifies that it’s actually contractor that is doing the killing and also at other company request.
