stoniejohnson··on Neuralink Prime Study Progress Update – User Experience
> In the weeks following the surgery, a number of threads retracted from the brain, resulting in a net decrease in the number of effective electrodes

1. Was this expected/seen in animal studies?

2. Will it degrade further? Are follow-up surgeries needed?

stoniejohnson··on DNS traffic can leak outside the VPN tunnel on Android
people use mullvad IPs maliciously -> those IPs end up on blocklists
stoniejohnson··on DNS traffic can leak outside the VPN tunnel on Android
you are likely logged in! they only enforce the blocklist on lurkers
stoniejohnson··on Unique volumes of Brothers Grimm fairy tales discovered in Poland
Yeah dang I just read the original version and the moral is a double whammy of don't fool yourself into being deceived/oppressed by a predator, but if you do, don't ever call them out on it!
stoniejohnson··on DNS traffic can leak outside the VPN tunnel on Android
only bummer is that due to their strong respect of user anonymity a lot of their IPs are blocked by major platforms like Reddit

Extra-ordinary claims require extra-ordinary evidence!

(my favorite maxim from 2012 era atheism debates on youtube)

But yeah I totally agree. Putting the cart before the horse here with the outlined consequences probably isn't smart, but to be fair, I haven't (and probably couldn't) read the paper.

stoniejohnson··on Deep Aphantasia: a visual brain with minimal influence from priors?
The two dark splotches above the tree are the eyes. The nose is to the right of the lower splotch, below the higher splotch. The forehead to the left.
stoniejohnson··on Language models are Super Mario: Absorbing abilities from homologous models
Pretraining determines the weights (e.g. the connections), fine-tuning let's you change some subset of the weights (e.g. the final layers) with a smaller chunk of task-specific data.

For G) I'm seeing something akin to the Moon falling in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

Basically a face staring at the tree from above.

Isn't it super likely the gift buyer will realize what's up when making the purchase?

There would have to be two websites or something.

This is cool! I immediately tried to use my arrow keys to move around though.
stoniejohnson··on My MacBook Setup (the 2024 version)
So this definitely isn't instant, but you can get pretty close (this is my setup without disabling SIP):

1. Go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Display, turn on Reduce Motion.

2. Use something like this in your skhd config:

ctrl - 1 : yabai -m query --spaces --space 1 | jq -r '.windows[0] // empty' | xargs yabai -m window --focus

Repeat this for however many virtual desktops you typically use.

stoniejohnson··on My MacBook Setup (the 2024 version)
I agree but it's pretty close.
stoniejohnson··on My MacBook Setup (the 2024 version)
Just curious, what features do you need that require you to disable SIP?

Even on my personal machine I haven't done that; I really just need to manage my windows and move them around.

stoniejohnson··on My MacBook Setup (the 2024 version)
It exists! Check out [yabai](https://github.com/koekeishiya/yabai), which is nicely paired with [skhd](https://github.com/koekeishiya/skhd).

Yep, I do `history | grep "<whatever>"` all the time..

I should probably make it a function now that I think about it.

Do me a favor and read over your own comment again.

It's immediately evident that it is a false statement. Perhaps you are sad and lonely. That could very well be the case. A lot of people are in the same boat, I know I am. Perhaps you have other issues entirely.

But that doesn't mean that your job is the only thing that makes you "worth anything as a human". Your worth as a person is given to you when you were born.

Not by the state. Not by your community. But by the very fact that you are a living, conscious thing. Life might be hard, but that doesn't mean without your job you are nothing.

stoniejohnson··on When to invest in marketing
If you are doing it yourself, it costs you time.

If you want someone else to do it, it costs you money.

stoniejohnson··on Social Media and Programming
I feel like a ton of people still just write code for themselves.

It's such a big problem that a common piece of advice for founders is "build something people actually want".

------

As a counterpoint to myself, perhaps founders are constantly building things for a hypothetical third party, which may support the point OP is trying to make.

stoniejohnson··on Releasing an indie game on 3 consoles at once and failing financially (2016)
No, I meant a lot of work (programming, 3D modeling, level design, sound engineering, etc.) was done to create the game.

Then someone had to port the game, which doesn't involve 3d modeling, level design, sound engineering, or writing game's core code from scratch.

Nothing to do with creativity.

stoniejohnson··on Releasing an indie game on 3 consoles at once and failing financially (2016)
I think the term 'non-creative' was just used as a practical distinction when discussing 'creating <the game>' versus 'porting <the game>'. I don't think the author intended to comment about the quality or even creativity of any developer's work.
