stndef··on I made tinnitus my friend, then it disappeared [video]
Even if you have tinnitus, wear hearing protection for sure.

Unfortunately, I have a connective tissue disorder, which is the cause of the tinnitus and the cause of my hearing loss as well. The more my hearing loss goes, the more apparent the tinnitus is. IF you're in a position where it isn't a health related issue, you can prevent it from getting worse, or at least reduce the pace that happens at.

I have an orchestra of it going on with the high pitches, those that sound like a vacuum going off in another room and hearing my own pulse. I do miss silence!

stndef··on My server is a phone now
What you can do, with some extra steps, is have Home Assistant installed (and have a Home Assistant server, I guess!) on the phone and use a smart power switch that's also associated with Home Assistant.

The phone's battery can be reported to Home Assistant, where an automation can be triggered to turn off power to the phone when the battery gets above a certain percentage and turned back on when it goes below.

Not the best solution, but certainly an alternative from messing around with trying to get the phone to work without a battery.

stndef··on Apple is getting this wrong
It's been a while, but at a previous job (maybe 8 years ago) I was responsible for managing mobile devices and using Blackberry's MDM suite, you could have segregation of personal and private data, where you couldn't move data from one "container" to the other, including clipboard data.

I'm out of the loop now, though.

Android did have better support at the time, but if I remember correctly, devices that had a work managed profile on them could still be completely wiped, including the personal/private container.

A bit of a pain, but I've always preferred (where possible) to have separate work and personal devices.

stndef··on StreetComplete: Fixing OpenStreetMap, one tiny quest at a time
I think the reasoning behind this is that ideally you're at the location where you can confirm what you see, instead of maybe referring to older media or from memory.

That being said, I agree with you and would like to see more ways to access the tool!

stndef··on The brain was not designed for this much bad news
I do watch how much I'm consuming the news as it does impact my day, but part of the problem is that when I eventually go to look at news online, I'm immediately confronted with 8+ blurbs of what's made up of a majority of bad news.

I would like to look at one bad thing at a time, please, but I know that's likely not compatible with money making models.

stndef··on The AirPods Effect
Absolutely, yeah. I use that when data is limited, but haven't come back to it in a while. Thanks for reminding me!
stndef··on The AirPods Effect
Same! To the point that when I'm home I'm usually playing outdoor ambient noise mimicking that.

stndef··on Microsoft's "fix" for Windows 11
I'm willing to be wrong, but it's specifically mentioned as an analogy for abuse in the article itself.

Not trying to turn everything "woke", but phrasing of scenarios around this just takes away from the severity of what actual abuse is.

stndef··on Microsoft's "fix" for Windows 11
I think we need to be a bit more careful and considerate around the use of language around physical abuse, or abuse in general, and using software.

Saying that here as someone that isn't fond of the Windows experience these days, but the two are not relatable.

stndef··on Oh My Zsh adds bloat
I notice the delay, but I try to check myself with it. Not everything has to be instant gratification. We're ruining our brains.
stndef··on Complete silence is always hallucinated as "ترجمة نانسي قنقر" in Arabic
Yeah, I can confirm seeing that a fair bit specifically during non-verbal parts of videos when someone is using a tool.
stndef··on I built something that changed my friend group's social fabric
Yup! I have significant hearing loss to the point that I'm useless without hearing aids.

I'm going to take this idea for my partner to use to get my attention if needed. Having it tie into Home Assistant is a win for me as well.

stndef··on Liberux: Linux phone
I can't help, but get generated vibes from the photos of the team. It just might be the focus of the camera, alongside my lack of trust for any images I see online these days!
stndef··on FDA approves a novel drug for schizophrenia
Acclimitisation can be hard. In some cases I can put things to the back of my mine, but often it's just hard or not possible.

Certainly in my experience and from talking to others who identify or have been diagnosed similarly, in the majority of cases you don't get used to certain things. You can't acclimitise and that's why a load of people who are autistic aren't employed.

I might seem okay in the office, but what isn't seen is my complete inability to function at home if there have been too many inputs and distractions. Lucky I can work from home a couple of times a week and my hours are flexible in that I can start earlier so not to travel into the city when it's busy -- busses are quiet at 05:00/06:00 thankfully!

Having a small office I share with a few people helps. My last place went all in on the open-planned office and it was hell. I can't see how anyone is getting much work done in environments like that, haha.

stndef··on FDA approves a novel drug for schizophrenia
I'm not a professional, and I'm not diagnosing, but I am diagnosed autistic and I share some of what you're talking about here.

I'm sensitive to noise, smells, lights and vibrations (living next to a very busy road, I can feel almost every large non-electric vehicle go by -- makes working from home hard at points).

Worth reading into if you have the energy. I do know folks who are diagnosed with schizophrenia and they seem to have an underlying component of some neurodivergence (arguably schizophrenia should also be considered neurodivergence) and went through an extreme burnout/traumatic event.

Hope you're able to get some peace!

stndef··on A Logo on a Prosthesis Is Like a Tattoo You Didn't Ask For
You're right -- I totally misread what you said. Sorry!

I think tattoo does imply more of a permanence and familiarity in regards to the relationship someone would have with a tattoo on a part of their body they're born with, but I do see your point as well.

stndef··on A Logo on a Prosthesis Is Like a Tattoo You Didn't Ask For
I see where you're coming from, but a prosthetic arm is someone's arm. Mentally it very quickly can become something you identify with, like a prosthetic arm basically being YOUR arm.

When you then have your prosthetic then being an advertisement, it can have an impact on your relationship with the device.

I don't want someone branding my arm and I can see why others would feel the same.

stndef··on MeTube: Self-hosted YouTube downloader
I second this. It's great!
stndef··on Rotz: Cross platform dotfile manager written in Rust
I'm yet to look at your project, but I can't say Comtrya without thinking about Stargate, so I'm kinda sold already.
stndef··on Bring back private offices
Speaking as someone who is autistic and has significant hearing loss, open offices are a form of torture. It might sound like hyperbole, but I promise it's not!

I enjoy working in a team, but in more enclosed spaces. In my current job I share a room with two other people and it's just right (apart from when all of us are in remote meetings at the same time, but you win some and you lose some).

stndef··on The music player you wish you had in the early 2000s
Scott Hanselman released a video[1] not too long ago that covers reviving a Zune in 2023, if that's of any use!

stndef··on Tinnitus linked to undetected auditory nerve damage
Very relatable. Have always been able to do this.

I have quite significant hearing loss these days, which has been tied back to having Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, relating to connective tissue development, which in part could impact areas that result in certain types of tinnitus developing.

Worse thing about tinnitus and hearing loss is that the more your hearing goes, the louder the tinnitus gets. Haven't heard proper silence in over a decade. Bit of a nightmare sometimes!

stndef··on Drinking diet sodas daily during pregnancy linked to autism in male offspring
Women tend to not be diagnosed as much as men either, mainly as they're forced to mask more throughout life -- I don't think we'll ever get an accurate representation there, unfortunately.

I feel like there are things not being said in the study that should have been. I could be wrong, but I don't see a mention of whether the parents of the autistic children were themselves autistic or not and feel that could be important criteria to have noted.

stndef··on Ask HN: My GPT project has become a local hit but I can't afford the bill
Is it GlasgowGPT by any chance?

Either way, there's definitely an opportunity for funding. In the case of Glasgow, there's a huge populous out there that are descendants of folk from the city/country taking pride in it (arguably more than a bunch of us that live here!) and like to get in on the banter.

That's certainly an avenue worth exploring if there's a similar relationship with folks or families of folks that emigrated away, but feel a strong connection.

Edit: You'll have to excuse my unfamiliarity with LLMs, but if you're storing messages and responses, and if there's a way to check that a message has already been asked, would it be possible to replay that (at least on the first message) instead of running a new query against the API? If they then engage further, then it would send the job out?
