stiglitz··on Camera sales are falling sharply
Survivor bias
stiglitz··on Only race cars should burnout
Yes, it’s correct to say that they “perform burnouts,” because “burnout” is being used there as a noun.
stiglitz··on Only race cars should burnout
This is a risky comment and probably too snarky. But this is a fundamental pattern in English and I wish at least native speakers would get it right.

NOUN: burnout shutdown failover

VERB: burn out shut down fail over

Just about any verb+adverb pair follows this pattern in English.

stiglitz··on MacBook Pro Keyboard Drives Me Crazy
Agreed- a replica of this thread seems to be produced on a weekly basis on HN.
stiglitz··on How Digital Advertising Markets Really Work
“That 22-year-old communications major has had to make way for data scientists, mathematicians, and computer programmers who, behind the scenes, use statistics, calculus, and linear algebra to optimize advertising campaigns, by micro-targeting users and constantly tweaking algorithms.”

Click the source link, and it’s an article about how companies are wasting money on data scientists when they only need data analysts, contradictory to the point made by primary article. This was an intriguing article, but I could not continue reading after noticing this.

stiglitz··on The New York Times sells premium ads based on how an article makes you feel
Feeling good is not the point of news. The point is being informed. I cant help but think of the saying, “ignorance is bliss.”
stiglitz··on Fortnite and the Good Life
A lifesaver or a crutch.
stiglitz··on U.S. teens are spending less time with their friends in person
This is the most concise statement of the problem with communication technology I’ve ever read.
stiglitz··on U.S. teens are spending less time with their friends in person
It’s hazardous and frankly inhuman to boil down human interaction into metrics like “number of participants.”

I’m amused by this notion that “it may feel like loneliness but it’s actually the richness of our new modes of communication you are feeling! Just get used to it!”

stiglitz··on Your AirPods Will Die Soon
Skaevola didn’t say “expressed preference.” He/she said “revealed preference.” I.e. revealed by actual purchases. This is more meaningful than any other “expression.”
stiglitz··on Containers as Kernel Objects – Again
Some people really mean “the code is the design” when they say “there is no design.” The point being that it’s easy to come up with a vague “design” that falls apart (or comes together, but as an unmaintainable mess) when you try to implement it.
stiglitz··on John Carmack on Inlined Code (2014)
Add a code comment to that single line of code.
stiglitz··on Can Repelling Magnets Replace the Spring in a Pogo Stick?
You mean quadratic, not exponential.
stiglitz··on A newly discovered tea plant is caffeine-free
The caffeine content claims about hojicha are apocryphal and in my subjective experience it has as much caffeine as other teas.
stiglitz··on Microsoft Releases a Linux Version of the ProcDump Sysinternals Tool
I like the tool but I'm aggravated to see that the sysinternals trope of printing BROUGHT TO YOU BY MARK RUSSINOVICH [ovich... ovich...] on every use persists. Pompous.
stiglitz··on On Hold for 45 Minutes? It Might Be Your Secret Customer Score
Ultimately we are talking about a feature whereby someone steals my card and buys something, and then I contest the purchase and don’t have to pay for it. So abstractly, is there really a difference?

Edit- Is the crucial difference that the vendor ends up losing the money rather than the bank in the case of credit cards?

stiglitz··on On Hold for 45 Minutes? It Might Be Your Secret Customer Score
I refuse all such games. It’s like Thoreau said: you judge your wealth based on what you can afford not to worry about. It means giving up money, but on principle these “points” are disgusting to me. Especially credit cards, which are also frequently rationalized based on their security benefits over debit cards- security benefits which IMO there is no reason debit cards shouldn’t also have.
stiglitz··on What Toasters and Distributed Systems Might Have in Common
“IP warmup.” Is this an algorithm to send broadcast emails at the maximum rate that avoids ISP spam detection? I find this concept disturbing. Morals of spam aside, we have two systems clearly working at odds rather than doing productive work.
stiglitz··on CppCon 2018: Simplicity: Not Just For Beginners [video]
I can choose C or C++ in my workplace.

I prefer primitive rather than clever (i.e. pompous) solutions to problems and therefore choose C.

I also do not want to spend a significant portion of my time in the hallway discussing language features, as I hear many C++-choosers doing outside my office most weeks.

From this perspective, I could only be made happy with C++ if features were removed from it. I admit that I’ve hardly given the language a chance, but that is partly because I know I’ll make solutions even more pompous than the ones I’ve seen. I don’t think humans can help it.

stiglitz··on A data-driven Black Friday/Cyber Monday Facebook ads strategy
My friends often complain about how early the holiday season starts. The advice in this article sort of explains that phenomenon: competition drives up advertising prices near the holiday, which makes earlier days more valuable for advertisers.

Edit- plenty of cynical fodder there to equate “holiday season” with “days with holiday-themed advertising”

stiglitz··on The US military is funding an effort to catch deepfakes and other AI trickery
I think it’s a thought experiment and not a suggestion. And the transmitter is for the person being videotaped, not the person creating the video. Though of course you raise a good point about anonymity of the video creator.
stiglitz··on The US military is funding an effort to catch deepfakes and other AI trickery
Would work in some but not all scenarios. Perhaps the video is legitimate but embarrassing for the represented party, so the represented party declines to sign it.
stiglitz··on TCP and BBR [pdf]
That configuration is already possible in Windows with the “DelayedAckFrequency” parameter and in Linux with the “quickACK” setting, but it’s unrelated to congestion control, and it will neither “solve” bottlenecks nor “turn TCP into UDP.”

Congestion control (the purpose of BBR) deals with the bottleneck problem. Delayed ACKs are an optimization to reduce protocol overhead. Indeed there are problems with delayed ACKs when combined with Nagle’s algorithm and an application that doesn’t send a steady stream of data, but it has nothing to do with the topic of this thread.
