stevezsa8··on The far right's win in Germany is sending a chill through Europe's establishment
I've seen the interviews at the AfD rallies.

"They're not afraid to say climate change is fake".

"They're going to kick out the refugees".

"They're going to fix the retirement pensions".

"Back to the good old days".

I'm now reading that the AfD are saying in the press that "democracy demands the other parties work with them". I mean if someone got into power on the promise of taking away the right for women to vote, I guess all the adults in the room have to bow down to 'democracy'.

I personally think the general population is some small percentage of saintly people. And a small percentage of evil people. And a huge mass in the middle. That mass in the middle can be swayed to vote for almost anything.

stevezsa8··on Children's stunted lungs show recovery in ultra low emission zone
The sad thing is... when the ULEZ went into effect, there were some wild conspiracy theories about it. Suddenly even my father was an expert and viewed it as sinister government intervention - all because of youtube crackpots. I couldn't get him to relate to my view that cleaner air must be a good thing.

I bet if some youtube weirdos pushed out videos against "big soap" for making us unnecessarily clean our hands after pooping... we'd have a growing following of angry "freedom from big soap" people.

The first day of this new app... half the workers will be arrested after they ended up drugs mules.
stevezsa8··on CT Scans of Health Wearables
My wife is T1 diabetic and has the Tslim pump. When there is an occlusion at the infusion site insulin stops being delivered and blood glucose goes high.

It never occurred to me that a pump might fail in a way to give her too much insulin...

stevezsa8··on Mystery donor gives Japanese city $3.6M in gold bars to fix water system
The city has 3m people according to the article. Even if only 10% are tax payers... all they need is a little over $10 per tax payer to equal the donation.

I mean the donation is cool. And will hopefully get the residents thinking about how they can also help their city. But I can't help thinking how it's just a small band-aid on a city that can't manage it's infrastructure budget as needed.

stevezsa8··on Indefinite Backpack Travel
I tried the rolling clothes thing. And it does work. But as I got older, I found using packing cubes to be better.

This way things have their place and you know where to find something specific.

stevezsa8··on What does Palantir actually do?
I interviewed at Palantir London about 10 years ago.

I am based in Europe and one of the younger interviewers let-slip that they will all be working during the local public holiday. lols. No thanks.

Also, I grew up in a mixed ethnic environment. For the last few decades there has been a focus on trying to make society more inclusive. Such that my school exam papers would have questions like "Susan has 6 apples and gets 6 more. How many does she have" or "Rohit is travelling at 50mph ...." So a variety of names and genders etc to reflect the people who live here.

Well, my Palantir interview information was about "networks of people that need to be tracked"... all Muhammads, Omars etc. These names were my school colleagues and friends, so this didn't sit well with me (just to be clear, I didn't want to work somewhere that seemed to be making software to track entire groups of people).

They really should have sanitised their material and made it about helping Susan and Rohit track financial crime or some such. Instead I got vibes of that tv show Homeland.

stevezsa8··on I tried every todo app and ended up with a .txt file
This worked really well for me at work. A new text file for each day, so I could explain what I did/plan to do during standup.

I struggle at home though. Because there's not as much pressure to do one task until it's done... so my text file gets forgotten about. Then I start a paper list. Then I forget that... rinse and repeat.

stevezsa8··on Interviewing the Interviewer: Questions to Uncover a Company's True Culture
I once interviewed at the London office of a US based company. The best part was when they took me to lunch... I asked the young American what he was going to do on the long holiday weekend. He said they have to work. Lol. No thanks!
stevezsa8··on Lightweight Linux Distributions for Older PCs
Hobby projects on super old / free hardware was/is fun. I remember using dumpster desktops as a student. I could SSH to my home PC from school. Ran a webserver. Even wrote C code to generate HTML for a website to host my photos. Fun times.

All my current desktops are ~8 year old corporate cast-offs.

stevezsa8··on Google User Data Is Police's Top Shortcut for Solving Crimes
Doesn't any web request need a source IP address? So I'm sure Google can infer who you are. Or atleast your household.

Plus, even if you used a Trusted^TM VPN, if the authorities want to know who you are, chances are they can find out.

stevezsa8··on Google User Data Is Police's Top Shortcut for Solving Crimes
I've seen a few stories of murders where the "smart" criminal turned their phone off during the exact window the crime took place. That and being seen at the scene of the crime was used as evidence.

So the intent part is definitely a thing if they simply turn off their phone.

stevezsa8··on Common infections can spark psychiatric illnesses in children
I'm not into mediation, but I watched something that said the brain scans of meditating experts resembled someone having a seizure or something. But the person with sat quietly.

I'm not drawing any conclusions. But I found it fascinating.

stevezsa8··on Common infections can spark psychiatric illnesses in children
My wife is also T1, diagnosed a couple years back with a week in ICU. She pulled through and now has a CGM and pump.

What really surprised me was her blood sugar rockets up when she has video meetings with a certain difficult colleague. While other chilled colleagues have no such effect.

That made me wonder if interacting with difficult people causes more physiological changes than I realised.

Sorry about the confusion. Games QA tends to pay around minimum wage. So similar to working in a supermarket.

Testing any other software tends to pay atleast double minimum wage. But less than a developer salary.

Obviously this is a very general statement but that has been my experience.

I'd heard deadlines couldn't be extended due to console certification timelines. But I think a bigger problem is poor project management and waterfall development methodology... add the fixed deadline and you've got a recipe for a buggy under tested game.

stevezsa8··on Japan pharma startup to begin human trials of tooth regrowth drug in 2024
Sorry to hear about what happened to your daughter.

I read a really terrible story years ago, a daughter was sunbathing in the driveway on a lounger, father comes home and parks... on his daughter, who is then paralyzed.

*Edit, found the article: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2013/aug/31/experie...

I can't even imagine what that guy felt.

stevezsa8··on Mythbusters: Wing Commander I Edition
In games QA, the deadlines are fixed and development creeps into QA time. So you get less QA time than you originally planned. If you're lucky, a patch will fix some bugs.

In non-games QA, if development takes too long, you typically get an extra sprint to test the changes.

In the games industry QA is considered an entry level job with little respect from other departments.

In non-games testing, QA is a career that pays double and is usually a respected part of the development process.

Basically, I would support the claim that QA could be improved generally across the board in the games industry.

stevezsa8··on Breakfast cereal is in long-term decline
Nice one. Sounds like you found a good solution to healthy eating.
stevezsa8··on Breakfast cereal is in long-term decline
This is really interesting to read.

I had a conversation with my wife a few years back, about how a lot of things that are deemed acceptable or situationally appropriate are cultural. And sugared-breakfast-cereal vs real food came up.

My conclusion was, cereal is cheap and sugar is addictive. Better to take the time to eat a good non-processed-food breakfast.

stevezsa8··on Apple to Launch 'Low-Cost' MacBook Series Next Year to Rival Chromebooks
Why do apple charge a premium but give the lowest storage and ram they can get away with (at least for the base models)... I would genuinely like to know. Especially now that it's all onboard.

If I was charging through the nose I'd at least solder a few extra nand chips out of an ethical desire to give a full-fat product for the premium price.

I know Dell do the same thing though. If you want extra ram... it'll be 3x what Amazon will sell at. But apple charge a bigger premium for the base product I feel.

stevezsa8··on Top Russian rocket scientist dies from ‘mushroom poisoning’
I tried Google Bard. It's hilarious. You ask it a non-trivial question... and it starts to give incorrect or contradictory answers within the same conversation. And if you correct Bard, well it just apologises and says "I am still learning".

stevezsa8··on Top Russian rocket scientist dies from ‘mushroom poisoning’
Yeah, after a few years of Reddit, I started calling this kind of thing "internet advice"... ok for a discussion, but often contradictory or wrong (if I happen to know the topic in depth).

For example, people give advice to grown men and women about how to proceed with their divorce or financial planning. Lots of up votes to lend credibility.... but if you dig into their history, the advice giver is 14 years old according to their other posts on other subreddits.

No disrespect to the people here. Just saying...

stevezsa8··on A DIY ‘bionic pancreas’ is changing diabetes care
My wife is a Type 1 diabetic. Here is some interesting complexity:

She has a continuous glucose monitor on her body that tells the insulin pump how to dose her basal insulin.

Basal insulin is the background dose that you have continuously delivered.

At night, if she sleeps on the part of the body with the sensor, the blood sugar reading will be lower than actual. So the pump stops insulin and starts beeping an alarm. No big deal, she just gets up and does a finger stick blood test to check for a false positive. About half the time it will be a false low-blood sugar measure.

A related issue is that when you first insert the sensor, the blood sugar reading is way off until the body calms down at the insertion site.

So long story short, I think we need better continuous glucose monitors to prevent potential wild see-sawing when there are two opposing meds, as with the insulin-glucagon combo.

stevezsa8··on That Old NetBSD Server, Running Since 2010
That's a shame and makes me sad.

I once saw my father furiously smacking the screen of the new laptop I brought him. It had stopped working. I quietly explained that the power light is off and he's not hooked up to the wall... yup, came back on as soon as he plugged into power.

I guess I see a commonality about people who don't know any better..

Nice work.
stevezsa8··on Close to the Machine: Technophilia and its discontents
23 years or so of lost knowledge can be regained in the grand scheme of things. But yes, the lack of easy access to coal and oil would be a problem. Maybe the next civilization will be more careful.

That's why I think we should all be trying to help keep society going. I try to do my bit. I just wish the preppers, survivalists, deniers would get involved in their community and try to save it too.
