steveylang··on Are there limits to economic growth?
Especially if their neighbor/co-worker/social peer just got the bigger and better version?
steveylang··on The Next 10 Days Will Decide This War
His 10 days does at least refer to a specific event or opportunity- "The next intake of conscripts into the Russian Army is on April 1, when around 130,000 Russian families are required to send their sons (18-25) to Conscription Centers where they will be inducted into the Russian Army as privates."

That being said, the article title does have a bit of clickbait to it (perhaps justified if the goal is to try significantly disrupt this next intake of conscripts.)

Maybe they can do a handheld Mac Micro or Mac Nano.
steveylang··on California proposal would force unhoused people into treatment
We have laws prohibiting smoking indoors in public places. When your actions affect the lives of others, that's when they are subject to potential legal/judicial intervention. Certain segments of the homeless population have become a significant public safety issue in many parts of California, that is what is driving this.

Leaving the extremely mentally ill/drug addicts to essentially rot and die on the street is not a solution for anyone. I'm not saying all homeless people fall into this category, but this is the segment that is driving this change.

steveylang··on California proposal would force unhoused people into treatment
Leaving them be is not helping anybody at all.
steveylang··on California proposal would force unhoused people into treatment
You're right there is a group C, but those choosing a nomadic life are probably not the ones in tents right at a major city intersection.

I am a 'live and let live' person and generally not bothered by the sight of homeless people (besides sympathy for their plight), but it has all started to get out of hand in California.

steveylang··on California proposal would force unhoused people into treatment
The correct answer is both are needed, for overlapping but not always identical reasons.

There are a lot of drug addicts in homeless encampments, and they are often a menace to other people and to themselves (the drug addiction often going hand-in-hand with mental illness.)

steveylang··on Why John Mearsheimer Blames the U.S. for the Crisis in Ukraine
I agree with all your points, but ironically what you said here is sort of another form of what Mearsheimer seems to advocate- carefully think things through to prevent provocations and escalations, based on a consideration of the concerns and fears of other involved parties.

That being said, while there may be many factors involved leading up to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, it's still Russia invading Ukraine.

steveylang··on Why John Mearsheimer Blames the U.S. for the Crisis in Ukraine
> What is unsaid is does the world HAVE to behave this way? Are humans capable of cooperation beyond petty short-sighted resource grabs? If the US ceased it's imperial ambitions, and all discrimination and capitalist exploitation ended, would we be able to build a harmonious society where we cooperate on prosperity?

Because unfortunately fear is pretty much our biggest driver as a species. So many of these unforgivable actions are done in varyingly twisted degrees of self-interest to protect our 'national interests' or our 'way of life', big country or small.

steveylang··on Why John Mearsheimer Blames the U.S. for the Crisis in Ukraine
Could we actually forge a tight alliance with Russia, while maintaining our alliances in western Europe?

In strictly political terms, I'll side with Germany, France, UK, etc. which all have bigger GDP's than Russia.

steveylang··on Why John Mearsheimer Blames the U.S. for the Crisis in Ukraine
Both aspects exist, that's my only real disagreement with Mearsheimer (the significance of each is another issue.) You just laid it out in a way that he seems to refuse to in the interview, so unfortunately half the interview was the 2 guys talking past each other.
steveylang··on Why John Mearsheimer Blames the U.S. for the Crisis in Ukraine
At the end of the day most people still have some sense of justice and morality (misguided or not.) In the interview, he could have acknowledged that these values still exist and influence the decisions of individuals and countries, without at all compromising his (many good) points about the politics of the region.

The people of Ukraine have overturned a fraudulent election, overthrown a president who betrayed his commitment to his people, and are now fighting tooth and nail to defend their country. But it's all 'just' power politics?

steveylang··on Why John Mearsheimer Blames the U.S. for the Crisis in Ukraine
His answer always seems to be, "No it's all a big political game, that's the only lens from which we can view this." The politics may be the most important thing from a geopolitical perspective, but they aren't the only thing.
steveylang··on Why John Mearsheimer Blames the U.S. for the Crisis in Ukraine
They do both talk past each other quite a bit, which is annoying as I do think Mearsheimer has some good input on the subject.
steveylang··on An 8-year-old slid his handwritten book onto a library shelf
They should digitize it and put the ebook up on Amazon.
steveylang··on Show HN: Veganize any recipe site with EatKind Chrome extension
In the long run you are right, in the short run the various fake/substitute foods and ingredients are good intermediate steps to a vegetarian/vegan diet.

I think the bridge many aspiring vegans/vegetarians find hard to cross is finding really 'hearty' foods that don't have to taste like a steak but give you a similar experience (or feeling?) So the easiest first step is the substitute products.

steveylang··on What the Omicron wave is revealing about human immunity
I'll take my chances with modern science and medicine, thank you (even with some significant ambiguities and occasional missteps (especially WRT our environment.)

How pre historic humans survived is like how many species survive today- have a brood or litter of 10, if 3 or 4 make it to breeding age to continue your line you've done well!

steveylang··on What the Omicron wave is revealing about human immunity
In reality, few people have the time or want to make the effort to comb through and analyze original sources. So most of us rely to varying extent on who we trust and consider to have accurate opinions or assessments.

One huge problem with COVID has been the emergence of essentially propaganda pieces masquerading as detailed, rigorous analysis. These give people a false sense of confidence- "Hey I've done my research!" when in reality you can google for 20 minutes and come up with impressive looking links for whatever view you are already predisposed to believe.

I'm sure these existed before, but COVID has taken things to another level.

steveylang··on What the Omicron wave is revealing about human immunity
The media gaslighting part is continuing to call ivermectin a horse medicine to disparage it, when it is also approved as anti-parasite medication for humans (if not for COVID.)
steveylang··on Star Citizen will limit its roadmap, as players are getting upset over delays
May as well have stayed. (JK kidding of course, congrats and hope you stay free and clear.)
steveylang··on Star Citizen will limit its roadmap, as players are getting upset over delays
I was just going to comment, the real game seems to be the development of the game, (pre)ordering and outfitting your ship and gear, etc. It will no longer be a game, once the game is finished.

“After a time, you may find that ‘having’ is not so pleasing a thing after all as ‘wanting.’ It is not logical, but it is often true.”

steveylang··on Ask HN: FOMO by working in startups only vs. Big companies
Theres also the nice middle-ground of smaller but more established companies. They may not IPO any time soon but aren’t so chaotic, and also don’t have the multiple levels of bureaucracy of a big company.

Usually in these companies roles aren’t as formally defined, so you can grow in skills and experience even if the company is never going to be a unicorn or re-define the future of ‘XYZ’.

steveylang··on Ayn Rand reviews children’s movies (2014)
Not surprisingly, much better satire from McSweeneys.
steveylang··on I am a New York City public high school student. The situation is beyond control
That is a good point. But I have read (famous last words) Omicron is now 95% of tested cases, it’s staggering how fast it has overtaken previous strains.

If it was say a pretty stable 50/50 or even 75/25 ratio of Omicron to Delta, that might favor shutting down in-person schools. But this current explosion in cases and resulting chaos is almost all Omicron.

steveylang··on I am a New York City public high school student. The situation is beyond control
The current procedures in place were for a Delta pandemic. If schools are to remain open now, the rules need to reflect Omicron.

Either you believe Omicron is contagious enough that you have to go back to 100% remote learning, or it is generally harmless enough (especially if you’re vaccinated) that you don’t have such strict standards in place (I am for the latter but that’s just my opinion.)

But the situation described in the Reddit post seems like the worst of all worlds.

steveylang··on Illegal movie streaming service Popcorn Time shuts down
Yeah but what about Popcorn-time.nl or The-Popcorntime.com?

IIRC there were at least a couple of these floating around, it was probably too much of a headache to figure out which were legitimate and which were malware.

steveylang··on How the West Was Lost
Ha, I’m an American born Chinese and I didn’t get the Americanized reference until I clicked on your link.

In my experience the phrase more or less means functionally sufficient, which is not exactly the same as say ‘not as good.’

Sometimes you want the best thing you can buy, other times you just want one that does the job. Of course, that is a different distinction than being pragmatic vs. cutting corners.

I guess ‘chabuduo’ sometimes sits in the gray area between the two.

steveylang··on How the West Was Lost
My experience has been that there are plenty of both good and bad ‘no name’ products to be found on Amazon. The bad ones I return and get a 100% refund through Amazon.

None of the stuff I buy is counterfeit, although plenty probably have designs copied from other products. Sometimes I’ve wondered whether I should buy that tool or pack of LED light bulbs from the local hardware store instead, but either way I’m buying products made in China and sold by a big American corporation.

I don’t know where this wormhole goes, although there has been some good discussion here covering multiple aspects and viewpoints.

steveylang··on Intellectual Loneliness
There can be a reasonable level of nuance and detail in many sports (if not most sports conversations!)

But most people don’t care about the why’s or the how’s on or off the field, and mainly just want to brag about their team (or complain if their team is bad.)
