stevev··on Toyota has stepped up lobbying to preserve its investments in hybrids, hydrogen
In addition to not betting on evs, Toyota along with many other car makers fail to understand the human desire for safety and convenience in their vehicles through the use of current camera technologies and computer applications.

A typical Tesla vehicle has 8 cameras thus providing a 360 degree vision to help assist the car/driver in a few applications. Security, safety and convenience.

A close second in terms of safety systems is Subaru with their eyesight features.

My personal experience and testing of my Toyota Sienna van’s PCS, otherwise known as a pre-collision system to assist in applying the brakes and or warn the driver that an object is detected in close proximity to the vehicle during moving speed, is almost absent. The system is too slow, delayed or late. Sense of safety from the pcs is non-existent.

These along with others things pushes me to have a greater interest in cars like Tesla despite it’s premium price.

At this point, we should point out that now there are such thing as smart cars (Tesla) vs dumb cars (toyota) and others and that safety should not be a second class feature but should be prioritized through the use of current camera technologies. Other than focusing on just the safety of a vehicle during a collision, although important, systems to prevent collisions should be prioritized as well.

stevev··on Schizophrenia linked to marijuana use disorder is on the rise, study finds
My experience is opposite.

My experience with cannabis use using a simple activity.

Sober, I can clean my office without much thinking and if I had to repeatedly do it, I’d probably do it the same fashion every time.

On cannabis, I’m able to see what I believe to be the more or most efficient way of cleaning my office, garage and rooms. I could probably come up with a few ways or road maps for doing so.

I don’t know what it is. Maybe there’s a higher level of dopamine from using cannabis that influenced me to have so much attention and focus on such a menial task.

I have been told that I’m usually not there mentally and never arrogant; and my friends are pretty outspoken.

My experience and opinion are similar to yours. A typical stoner isn’t really there, and when they are there, it’s more of a questioning or socializing activity. Alcoholic behaviors are what I would describe as arrogance and extreme impairment.

I doubt this even happened lol.
stevev··on Schizophrenia linked to marijuana use disorder is on the rise, study finds
I’m upvoting this.

I believe your explanation on the strains are on point.

When using the vapor method, very high in thc, sometimes I do experience psychosis or schizophrenic symptoms. My perception of reality does change a bit during peak affect but disappears after wearing off.

When smoking raw cannabis the regular way, I experience a more calming affect; emotionally tolerable and focused mindset.

stevev··on Schizophrenia linked to marijuana use disorder is on the rise, study finds
My experience with the substance is similar to yours. I’ve started again occasionally and see that the experience differs depending on the strain. I do get paranoia that wears off; there were times where I’ve experience schizophrenia like symptoms; where reality seems off or my perception of it changes temporarily until it wears off. Hopefully I don’t have early onset of the disorder.

Regarding your friends, is it possible that the behavior you are seeing is when they are under the influence and not during sober?

stevev··on Study finds 83% of software developers feel burnout
If it helps. I feel burnout.
stevev··on Tesla’s $16k Quote for a $700 Fix Is Why Right to Repair Matters
Hack fix are subjective. That same logic can be applied to any car makes. Repairs are not a black box. They’re not using duck tape. A fix is a fix
stevev··on What are the odds we are living in a computer simulation? (2016)
My opinion, the enigma of what we call the paranormal, or sightings of people who has passed, could shed some light about the reality we live in.

Run outside or get a truform or assault runner.

stevev··on Tell HN: Aaron Swartz died today, 8 years ago
A person with so much to live for and so much to accomplish; I don't believe he took his own life.
stevev··on Misinformation ‘Superspreaders’ Seed False Election Theories
Many mainstream outlets now run propaganda and sensational reporting. It’s biased, misleading, retractive, opinionated and incomplete. Far from the days of just informing and listing main arguments from both sides of the aisle. Stop referencing crap like that here.
stevev··on San Francisco voters approve taxes on highly paid CEOs, big businesses
A great way to push companies out of your state.
stevev··on Ask HN: I'm a terrible developer, what now?
Keep it simple stupid. Simple code is better than hard to understand code.

It's okay to just write code for the sake of writing, but keep in mind the idea that what if new requests comes thru; given the current state, can the code be changed easily?

Code organization is a work in progress. Can your code be easily/separately testable?

Being good at coding is subjective.

Sometimes, it may just be the tool (programming language) you are using. Try Ruby. Try Vue.js.

stevev··on Workman Keyboard Layout (2010)
A few years ago I was stuck between workman, norman and colemak. I decided to go colemak for ease of transition.

Being a longtime qwerty typer, my hands came to favor a more left hand typing ratio.

I later realized colemak tends to be more right hand. My qwerty wpm rate went from avg 130 down to 80.

My hands feel more comfortable typing colemak for long durations compared to qwerty.

The placement of the letter H and E didn’t really bothered me. I’ve since picked up a modified version of colemak that fixes some of the short comings of colemak.

Maybe one day I’ll pick up workman due to having a more even left/right hand distribution.

stevev··on Ask HN: I'm a software engineer going blind, how should I prepare?
Not sure if anyone has mentioned plover. A few years ago a dev was able to use it audio wise to code. Programming by sounds. openstenoproject
stevev··on Chloroquine trial halted after 11 patients die on high dose
I think a high dose of any reactive medication or drug is deadly.
stevev··on Alone in a Crowded Milky Way
I am intrigued by the simulation theory. That we as a species has reached a certain level of advancement to simulate a reality and experience it; or we may just be npcs or temporary programs for another intelligent race in this simulation.

We could also be a zoo/prison planet far into enemy territory. Currently being experimented and observed. Hybridization in order to infiltrate our actual civilization that’s located elsewhere.

stevev··on Show HN: I built a website for sharing salary info
One issue with static data is that it’ll rise and fall. Salaries today may be different in the future. You would have to continually receive data to have the latest up to date changes.

Many variables affects the data; age, location, experience, availability, opportunity etc. therefore your data starts to look more like a range, rather than just a number.

In the past, for the same role, company a will only pay this much, whereas company b is willing to negotiate; this is changing.

The problem has already been partially solved. Two companies comes to mind; one stands out by far imo.

stevev··on We ran the numbers, and there really is a pipeline problem in engineering hiring
Sure, 50% of boot camp graduates are women. What’s the ratio if we include actual university undergrads gender ratios?

If I’m not mistaken, there are more men going into cs than women here in the US. I don’t think a parity can happen unless equal number of women pursues cs degrees. I believe the disparity is more inline with career choice/goals.

Unfortunately factoring in case studies involving the technical aptitude’s of women versus men in technical hiring, the results are bleak for women; hopefully this changes and I am not saying women are not able to compete; it could be a cultural issue and the low numbers of women entering the field makes it even harder to achieve gender parity.

I find relevance when discussing gender disparity represented in the trucking industry.

stevev··on Ask HN: Is web dev viable today?
Yup it’s still viable. Just pick one. Let us know what career you’ll pick after web dev. Gluck!
stevev··on Ask HN: How many of you have been impacted by a layoff?
I’ve been laid off. It’s normally big successful companies and or failing companies that lays people off.

The project that you are in matters.

People stuck in maintenance mode normally are safe; whereas devs in some greenfield projects may find themselves seeking a new team/project when management decides to cancel or go a different route for the project. Worst, if a project manager doesn’t like you.

I’ve luck with mid/smaller companies as both a contractor/fte.

Projects are more dynamic and long term.

stevev··on U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory: Marijuana Use and the Developing Brain
I’m curious, has there been any related deaths to cannabis usage? Why is this plant illegal when Alcohol has killed millions?

stevev··on A touchpad is not a mouse, or at least not a good one
For me, gestures on an apple trackpad eliminated the need for a mouse. They have had it for years and imo is one of the biggest differences in computing experience between an Apple machine to a windows.

stevev··on Design Considerations for High-Throughput Cloud-Native RDBMS [pdf]
A simple table alter operation such as adding a column or modifying a column on a big table would break once the instance reached maximum disk storage space due to copying.

These solutions offered a way to alter the table without using all the disk space available on the instance. Thus bypassing the storage issue.
