stevep98··on The NSA called me after midnight and requested my source code (2018)
At that time, if you made software available for export (and that included making a version freely downloadable), it was limited by law to 40 bits.

stevep98··on What Is the Cost of Building a Subway? [pdf]
I was always impressed by Berlin's subway. Some parts of it are very accessible, with the rails literally 20ft below the street. For example: https://youtu.be/42EV-9G9vjo?t=230

Also, no fare gates (there are occasional ticket checks on the trains, and heavy fines for non-payers).

stevep98··on Hospitals pledge to fight admin price transparency plan in court
This is one of the reasons that medical pricing is out of control. If nobody knows the pricing for anything, how can anybody (not just patients, but anybody else involved with the system) make rational decisions?

That tv remote in the picture you linked is awful. Very little tactile differentiation to let you feel your way around, and way too many buttons.

I remember when the TiVo came out, that remote was a game-changer:

stevep98··on The XY Problem (2014)
yes, surely the questioner is trying to balance “doing as much of the work as possible”, and “breaking the problem down into small steps”, versus “give me the answer to my entire problem”

If you ask too broad a question you’re likely to be ignored, imo.

stevep98··on Tesla Live Stream – Autonomy Day [video]
I think there is a lot of scope for an autonomous vehicle to be safer than a human driver. Consider:

1) computer has faster reaction times.

2) 360-degree awareness

3) better awareness of vehicle performance.

Imagine a scenario where you are at speed and get a tire blowout. The car can sense it instantly through tire pressure sensor, and counter the swerve appropriately - something that humans are very poorly prepared or practiced for.

Alternatively, a driver in a neighboring lane makes an unsafe lane change into your lane. The car sees him, honks the horn, moves/brakes/accelerates to avoid the other car, before you've even seen whats happening.

stevep98··on Tesla Live Stream – Autonomy Day [video]
It was on Tesla's youtube channel up to about 2:30pm, then it just went 'unavailable' as I was watching it, and is now unavailable.

stevep98··on Xkcd: Orbital Mechanics
There is a lot of opportunity to explain engineering concepts through gaming. Especially training users in intuition, and in the applications of math.

Calculus and trigonometry have tons of applications in aiming mortars!

stevep98··on Could be the end of real estate buyers agents
Buyers agents get paid more if the home sells for more. They should be incented to drive the price down for the buyers, not up.

Even so, it’s really better for any agent to accept the first reasonable offer, close it out and as quickly as possible move on to the next house. They are not incented to drag the sale on to get a better deal for the party they represent.

stevep98··on Satellite Harpoons Space Debris in Test
I dont think the delta-v for deorbiting is even necessary. You just need to agglomerate all the debris into one big mass. This will make it easier to track.

In the future, when we need some in-orbit resources, etc, we can use these. (much of the debris is spent booster stages)

stevep98··on High-speed rail in California was a disaster, but there’s a better way
> but then I am not bound to the train schedule

Trains from Tokyo to Osaka leave about every 10 mins. You can generally find a seat on a train if you just show up to the station 30 mins before the departure. And if that train is full, just wait 10 minutes more. It's just so much better.

You're also not price-gouged by making last minute travel arrangements as happens with airlines.

stevep98··on Christie’s sells its first AI portrait for $432k
The artwork should have been generated during the auction itself, with individual bids being seeds into the generative process. The bidders would contribute to the next generation. You wouldn't know what the final product would be. But, you'd own each of the steps in the process, not just the final image.

You heard it here first!

stevep98··on Driverless Hype Collides with Merciless Reality
Driverless cars have advantages over humans too. Faster reaction speed, constant 360 degree surveillance, lack of distraction, (theoretically) better control of brakes and steering to handle skids.

Waymo has demonstrated solutions for many of the edge cases you mention. This video is from 3 years ago: https://youtu.be/tiwVMrTLUWg?t=530

Regarding snow, it maybe a difficult problem, but if cars can't see road markings, neither can humans, so how do they do it? Sometimes by following a car in front. Though far from real autonomy, my Tesla doesn't need to see road markings for autopilot to work, it will fall back to following the car in front.

And.. Why does Waymo have to solve this inclement weather problem now? Surely it would be better to demonstrate safety in good weather, then light rain, then heavy rain, then light snow? They can just refuse to operate in bad weather unless they are confident about it.

stevep98··on Apple self-driving car in accident: California DMV filing
What are the biggest purchases people make? Of those, is there a high-end product which does apple can apply their middle-high end design chop to see a signficant profit? How will Apple grow from a $1T to a $5T, and $50T company?

My speculation: cars, houses (or likely condos with Apple financing), then communities (like Disney/Celebration) and Cities. All designed by Apple, with everybody living the Apple way.

stevep98··on What to Do After Finding Hot Connectors on Overhead Power Lines (2017) [video]
This one can fly with just one rotor running:

https://youtu.be/gfkRCzgHGq8

Admittedly it would be a pretty terrifying ride to the ground, but preferable to plummeting. There’s a lot of rotational energy in the aircraft though.

I think there’s probably significant scope for improvement in redundancy of these systems.

stevep98··on My Life in Pens (2009)
This reminded me of an old website from about 10+ years ago. The guy would review artist pens, and would include a drawing of the pen, and whatever else he felt like that day.

Really nice website. I enjoyed reading it, does anyone remember what it was?

stevep98··on Basic Cave Diving: A Blueprint for Survival (1986) [pdf]
I am very interested in learning about the project management/logistics of the operation in the cave.

You have the personnel, who speak different languages, and of variable ability.

There are tasks to accomplish such as laying supply lines, placing cylinders, finding the boys, accompanying lesser trained divers.

There are supplies to manage, food, water, equipment.

I suppose armed forces specialize in planning these types of operations. Most other project managers have more of a luxury of time. I just am amazed about how they put this together. I hope they put together a report afterwards, because people need to learn an awful lot from this.

stevep98··on Tesla Driver Banned from Highway After Being Caught in the Passenger Seat
I have a tesla and until recently I misunderstood how the hand detection works. It actually doesn’t detect grip, rather it sense slight resistance to its motors moving the wheel.

Also, there is another safeguard... it will warn you when you disconnect the drivers seatbelt.

I think the earnings are adequate. There are not much alternatives, as deactivating autopilot could potentially be more dangerous

stevep98··on Live Roads promises 1.5m-accuracy with standard cellphone hardware
I think they are using the accelerometer (or even microphone) to measure road noise. What appears to us as mostly white noise probably reveals unique road flaws such as cracks, concrete joints, potholes, dips, bumps.

Sample this data and feed it into a signal matching algorithm like Shazam...
