stevencorona··on Documentation to set up a simple macOS VM in QEMU, accelerated by KVM
I recently went the KVM MacOS/Hackintosh route (but not using this exact script) and while it functionally worked great— GPU Passthrough (Used RX580 and Vega 56), PCI Passthrough (USB Controller/Bluetooth/Wifi/Ethernet Card/SATA Controller/NVME Drive), iMessage, Handoff, AirDrop, etc. etc. I found it to be hassle on my consumer AMD motherboard with an AMD GPU.

With the AMD GPU, I had trouble resetting the GPU between VM starts/stops without restarting the whole computer. This appears to be a problem with a consumer AMD cards.

It could be specific to AMD Ryzen IOMMU Groups, but it was also pretty annoying to passthrough the PCI devices and still leave the appropriate hardware for the host machine. There aren't any native virtio drivers in OSX so you really need to pass through your sata controller/ethernet card for full performance. Might have been easier with a server motherboard with cleaner IOMMU groups, though.

I ended up just building a bare-metal Intel Hackintosh which was less of a hassle.

$0 - Just first month and dealer fees.

Yea, insurance is about $150/mo in San Francisco. Much lower outside of SF. I think it was ~$60/mo on my Cayman in Charleston, SC.
stevencorona··on Porsche will begin an app-based subscription service next month
In California, so no upfront sales tax on lease, but ~$100/mo of the payment goes to sales tax. Total payment w/ tax is around $1150.

Rough numbers: 2016 Heavily optioned C4S Manual- MRSP $125K, negotiated down to $105. Residual is like $75K for C4S w/ Manual. 3 years, 10K miles a year. The Money factor is whatever the lowest PFS was at the time (you can look it up on forums and just demand the base rate).

No, brand new 2016.
stevencorona··on Porsche will begin an app-based subscription service next month
Cool service but it ends up being like 2x the price of leasing. For comparison, I've leased two Porsches through PFS in the past and the all-in monthly payment (incl tax/insurance) was around $1500/mo for a 911 C4S (36 month) and $900/mo for a Cayman (24 month).

And for the $2000/mo subscription, it doesn't seem like you even get access to the 911.

stevencorona··on The IPv6 Adoption Curve
AT&T has deployed 6RD instead of native dual-stack. I can get close to gigabit on IPv4, but max out at 80mbps if I use their 6RD gateway.
stevencorona··on Erlang: Pi2 ARM Cluster vs. Xeon VM
Pretty cool, but would love to see it compared with a newer xeon. I have a xeon-d in my homelab that would be cool to compare it against— 8 2GHz cores @ 45W. They have a 1.7GHz version @35W now, too.
stevencorona··on Ask HN: Investing on P2P Lending Platforms?
I've about $30K in LendingClub over the past 2-3 years. Experience has been great, I don't consider it to be as risky as people make it out to be. I have Automated Investing turned on.

stevencorona··on Ask HN: Best registrar only and why
AWS/Route53 is the best registrar IMO. 2 clicks to buy, no ads or upsells, API access and advanced DNS features.
stevencorona··on Twitpic blocking archive team from backing up pictures
There are hundreds of TBs of data.
stevencorona··on Twitpic blocking archive team from backing up pictures
Yes and he won't reply to me either.
stevencorona··on Twitpic blocking archive team from backing up pictures
I used to be the CTO of Twitpic (I left about 2 years ago).

It sucks to see your work crash into the ground like this.

Just so it's clear, there's just Noah (and his parents) that are left running the company.

stevencorona··on The killer gigabit app? It’s not what you think
I just moved to San Francisco and got Webpass (about 800mbps symmetrical). It has wildly changed my perceptions about how I use the internet. For example, instead of buying a $1000 Raided NAS, I just use arq to push my backups straight to S3. It's fast enough (~70MB/s to AWS NorCal Region). Uploading a 2GB video to YouTube? That'll take 45 seconds.

It has really changed the fundamental way I use the internet.

stevencorona··on Life360 CEO calls patent troll "Piece of Shit"
Just speculation (I work at Life360), but we announced our $50m Series C this week.. looks like the patent troll got the news, too.
stevencorona··on What happened with iOS7?
My knee jerk reaction is to agree with this post— it's design by committee, shed painting, whatever you want to call it.

"This just makes me think that each individual app team submitter their own design for an icon based on some loose guidelines and they all got thrown together into a bucket"

Probably resonates with me the hardest— personally, I think the apps look great, but the icons really just look "off" to me. To each their own, I suppose.

would love to have an idea of what something like this would cost.
stevencorona··on College was my biggest mistake (2012)
400/week after taxes is something like 1200/mo.

    1200
    -500 (rent, 2 roommates)
    -200 (food/beer)
    -100 (car)
    -350 (min student loan payment)
50 left over.
stevencorona··on College was my biggest mistake (2012)
I would take a class if it was interesting to me, but I doubt I would become a matriculated student or pursue a degree.
stevencorona··on College was my biggest mistake (2012)
No, I went to a quarter based school which is not the norm.
stevencorona··on College was my biggest mistake (2012)
Hey guys, author here- this is an older post that someone reposted. I get alot of hate for this post, so let me sum it up here:

College was my biggest mistake. Not your biggest mistake. I'm not giving advice, just being honest about my experience. You have to "pay to play". Who knows if I would have been able to bootstrap myself without a year of college. All I know is I can't imagine the ridiculous amount of debt I'd be in if I finished.

It boils down to this: I wish that when I was 18 someone told me college wasn't the only option.

stevencorona··on Google blocks Twitpic over alleged malware
I posted this in another related submission-

We're trying to sort it out but there isn't really any information provided by Google/Chrome to go on. The best "details" they have show that Twitpic has 0 pages with Malware.

Crazy how some automated process at Google can kill an entire site just like that.

stevencorona··on Root Domain Website Hosting for Amazon S3
4 billion objects, not requests. Way more requests.

We keep access logs to look for errors. The error rate is marginal.

stevencorona··on Root Domain Website Hosting for Amazon S3
I serve over 4 billion images out of S3 and don't have any issues with 50x errors.
stevencorona··on AWS: the good, the bad and the ugly
Lol, very true, but for 3-4 hour workloads they are perfect- which I think is one of the "makes the most sense" kind of EC2 workloads.

In this case, I had about 8 million output files from a Hadoop job that I needed to process with MySQL- it was perfect!

stevencorona··on AWS: the good, the bad and the ugly
Even the smallest instances have 160GB of storage, all the way up to 3TB on the cc2.8xlarge. New high I/O instances have 2TB of "holy shit fast, destroys my $1000 enterprise SSD" storage. (just tested it last week)
