My day job is to download random programs suggested by people I haven't met before, and post "hot takes" about them on the Internet.

Opinions are those of Gilgamech Technologies.

Many of these stores have a counter or wall full of tablets - 1 for each delivery service. They have an Uber Eats tablet, a GrubHub tablet, DoorDash tablet, Bite Squad tablet, etc.

This poster appears to be against cars:

stephengillie··on Unslacking Tideways Company
My coworkers go out of their way to tell each other, in person, about the free food.
stephengillie··on Unslacking Tideways Company
> ...remember that you never have to reply immediately.

Yeah, but you have to check immediately, unless you have immense willpower. And so the distraction is already made, the focus is lost, and the time spent switching contexts can't be recovered.

I've only ever seen Slack in 1 of 2 modes:

- Dozens of people in every room having multiple conversations, and any comment you make is quickly lost in the flow of other discussions.

- Ghost town.

Everything new is old already.
stephengillie··on Uber’s Restaurant Empire
It would have to be a common kitchen, and they would need everyone to pass a food handler's class.

Given Uber's reputation for bucking regulation, I would be doubly-hesitant to trust meals from their kitchen.

You believe phones should only show pornography and no other apps should exist. Thank you for revealing your true character.
stephengillie··on The Waiting Time Paradox, Or, Why Is My Bus Always Late?
OneBusAway is surprisingly accurate, at least in my experience. Google Maps has very good transit support too.

One reason buses are late is because a bus must travel a circuit. Cars provide linear transportation, so the delay can only happen in the direction of your travel. Since buses run a circuit, they are impacted by delays in the direction opposite of your travel as well.

Your bus might be late because the return route has traffic or other delays. Or maybe a drunk or drug user got in a fight with the driver and the police were needed. Or someone in a wheelchair had a problem getting onto the lift.

stephengillie··on US election system reveals frightening vulnerabilities at almost every level
Many of us were tired of the partisan sniping before this week's tragedies.

Election season makes the politically-minded think they can endlessly spill toxic discourse across all social and news mediums.

stephengillie··on Your DNA Is Out There. Do You Want Law Enforcement Using It?
This article is so FUD that it hurts.

Honestly, yes, I want law enforcement to use DNA among other evidence they collect. I do not live in fear that law enforcement is secretly hunting me. If you do, speak to someone about your paranoia. My name and address have been on my public resume and my website WHOIS for over 5 years, and I haven't experienced any negative repercussions whatsoever.

I must not fear.

Fear is the mind-killer.

Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.

I will face my fear.

I will permit it to pass over me and through me.

And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.

Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

stephengillie··on What is the revenue generation model for DuckDuckGo?
I did too, during Marketing 101 in college. And this illustrates the need to update the term.
stephengillie··on Running a Wall of Sheep in the Wild
Your reply is the toxic one, and you're missing GP's point.
stephengillie··on In Amazon Go, no one thinks I'm stealing
Amazon Go's model is "Extreme Loss Prevention" - have no checkers, monitor all customers, and just charge their account for what they "shoplifted".

Amazon Go stores are classist and ageist in a different way than traditional retail, because they effectively ban customers who don't have an Amazon account, or don't have a bank account backing the Amazon account, or don't have a smartphone. My parents couldn't shop there because they don't want to use smartphones.

Supposedly, the machine-vision and algorithms aren't quite there yet, and the stores depend on a very large human element behind the cameras.

stephengillie··on Meditation in the Time of Disruption
I first heard this quote from David Carradine in the TV series Kung Fu: The Legend Continues. Cain was telling this to his impatient teenage son. Both characters were monks in a Buddhist temple in California.

What are some strategies for dealing with this sort of toxic reply? I also feel pornography has its place (alone or with 1 other consenting adult), and parent's refrain is sung far too often by other men.
stephengillie··on Running a Wall of Sheep in the Wild
Grocery stores have to employ who they can get - they can't offer tech wages nor interesting projects. Either you're stacking cans at 45 cases per hour, or you're scanning and bagging 3 items a minute, or cleaning toilets and pushing carts. So mandatory training has to be clear to even the lowest elements of our society.
stephengillie··on The World's Tiniest Optical Gyroscope Is Now Smaller Than a Grain of Rice
You're right, I believe I'm thinking of accelerometers.
stephengillie··on What is the revenue generation model for DuckDuckGo?
CPM should be updated to CPK.

The M in CPM is the Roman numeral for 1000. It's an archaic term, and should be replaced with the SI unit for 1000. Though coining the phrase "kilo-impression" would be a stretch.

stephengillie··on The World's Tiniest Optical Gyroscope Is Now Smaller Than a Grain of Rice
How small can we make a gyroscope and still have it respond to gravity? Maybe a few molecules? Could this be a path to unify Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity - through experimentation, since theory seems to have failed?
stephengillie··on Two million calls to 311
Which Vancouver?

Seattle doesn't have a 311 phone service. But they do have a Find It Fix It app. It's 2018 not 1988, why don't more cities have an app?

stephengillie··on What is the revenue generation model for DuckDuckGo?
> In fact, search advertisers buy search ads by bidding on keywords, not people. It makes intuitive sense, too. If you search for ‘car’, you are more likely to respond to a car ad than something you searched for last week.

This keyword-based advertising is our primary business model.

The rest of the post is a rant about user tracking.

stephengillie··on Scooters are taking cars off the road, a survey says
> The Portland Bureau of Transportation sent a questionnaire to 75,000 scooter users and received 4,500 responses.

At least there's no question of the obvious bias. Of course scooter riders are going to report that they use scooters more than cars. How would the survey results be different if they surveyed car users too?

stephengillie··on 100ms in additional latency costs you 1% revenue?
Were you switching from dialup to high-speed internet? The latency numbers sound about right for dialup to a local server - if memory serves from the early 2000s.
stephengillie··on Scooters are taking cars off the road, a survey says
It's like GP has never shopped at Costco.

Edit: or had elderly parents. When someone needs to use a walker, good luck getting them on a bicycle. Plus, where do you carry the walker?

stephengillie··on Scooters are taking cars off the road, a survey says
There's a reason motorcycles are common in the summer in WA State, but very rare in the winter. You'll arrive completely drenched if you're not in a car. Not only is there rain, sometimes sideways rain, but also lots of roadway spray. At times, there are "greyout" conditions where you can't see more than 100 feet down the freeway, for all the water in the air.

Seattle's former Mayor Mike McGinn used a bicycle to commute, and often arrived at city meetings as a sweaty and smelly person. Most businesses don't have a shower for bicyclists.

Or the UK, where they drive in miles and weigh themselves in Stones.

In the USA, you can buy soda in liters and most cars use metric wrenches.

stephengillie··on The Death and Life of the 13-Month Calendar
How about the metric time system?

1 day = 10 hours

1 hour = 10 minutes

1 minute = 10 second minutes

1 second minute = 10 third minutes

Or should it scale at 1:100? Why or why not?
