stephencoyner··on Nvidia Announces Financial Results for Fourth Quarter and Fiscal 2024
Don’t you think those two things compliment each other? Whether they’re chasing clout or are just executing well based on the latest technology is up for debate, but I think they’re onto something big
stephencoyner··on Nvidia Announces Financial Results for Fourth Quarter and Fiscal 2024
That’s admittedly high, but their growth is also very high (the commercial business grew 36% last year and they expect 40% this year) which makes the stock attractive.

The gov business is growing slower, but the wins come in waves and those contacts are incredibly sticky

stephencoyner··on Perplexity Raises $73.6M Series B Funding Round
Surprised this isn’t making more noise on HN. Since getting Perplexity premium, I now barely ever use Google at all. Perplexity solves all my use cases better in most every way.

I still find ChatGPT to be much better at searching based on an image, but besides that I prefer perplexity to ChatGPT as well

stephencoyner··on RAM, Tesla and Subaru Have Worst Drivers, While BMWs Have Highest DUI Rates
Incredibly anecdotal, but as a cyclist I’ve found Tesla drivers to be the worst. They are always speeding, always too close to me as I bike, and seem to be unaware of it all.

My first guess is that the acceleration is so fast and the car is so quiet that it’s very easy to be unaware.

stephencoyner··on Stripe live dashboard
While the computer adds some nostalgic value, cramming all that stats into it makes the dashboard very hard to read and is the worst size ratio for mobile. Shopify wins this round [1]

stephencoyner··on Ask HN: How did you get rid of your performance anxiety?
I used to get very nervous for presentations or even speaking up in a meeting for the exact reason you gave. The honest truth is that forcing yourself to do as many presentations as possible is the best way to build confidence and ultimately kick the fear.

For me that came the hard way when transitioning from a strictly product role to a customer facing role where I had to be “on” every single day in customer calls. Eventually you realize that even your mistakes aren’t the end of the world and they’re truly nothing to be nervous about.

One small trick that helped me in the beginning of that change was typing everything I wanted to say multiple times without over practicing

stephencoyner··on We are beginning to roll out new voice and image capabilities in ChatGPT
The voice feature reminds of the “call Pi” feature from Inflection AIs chatbot Pi [1].

The ability to have a real time back and forth feels truly magical and allows for much denser conversation. It also opens up the opportunity for multiple people to talk to a chatbot at once which is fun

Where’s that Gemini Google?

I was waiting for “one more thing” to show a new LLM powered Siri. I am disappointed
stephencoyner··on Duet AI for Google Workspace Now Available
The new chat interface looks very interesting. Basically a Slack / Teams clone? They even call the video chat within it "Huddles" like Slack.

Edit: Looks like this launched today as well: https://workspace.google.com/blog/product-announcements/welc...

stephencoyner··on B.C. woman buried in Amazon packages she did not ask for and does not want
My parents had the exact same issue. They kept getting packages meant for a random person they didn't know, but addressed to their home. Lots of cheap, random products like $20 massage guns.

They contacted Amazon and they said "nothing we can do, enjoy the stuff." Pretty odd that they can't even message the person and tell them what's happening. It all ended up in the trash or given away.

stephencoyner··on Rewind.ai now available for iPhone
Is there a limit to the amount of activity you can do on the iOS app? Everything was working great for the first few hours that I had the app but it has stopped tracking anything.
stephencoyner··on A full episode of South Park generated by AI
It seems like it could well be fake. The Twitter account that launched this paper [1] links to a website [2] for the company with a fake address and what seems like fake employees (they all have no LinkedIn profiles).

The address is 500 Baudrillard Drive, San Francisco, CA 94127 which doesn't exist, but Jean Baudrillard [3] was a French sociologist and philosopher focused on media, culture, technological communication, and the concept of “hyperreality”

stephencoyner··on Chatbots are not the future
Can you expand on this?
stephencoyner··on Chatbots are not the future
I think the future interface is a smart assistant for your life that gives you suggestions on what you should be doing (both for work and personal life). Sure, there may be a prompting text box, but the assistants will be so good at suggesting that you won't need it very often (besides searching for the occasional thing or giving feedback).

Driving these suggestions is all of your data as well as your goals and values that you can give to the assistant in natural language.

At work the goal might be: "I want to sell $100,000 worth of widgets this quarter" and it will break down step by step how that might be possible.

For personal life it might be "I want to get involved in the kayaking community" and it will recommend activities, clubs, etc.

Once these assistants are good enough, it will be reckless to not use one (especially at work). We will then live in a world where AI and human live together and make decisions together hand in hand. Buckle up.

stephencoyner··on Half of vinyl buyers in the U.S. don’t have a record player: study
I buy a lot of new rap vinyl because having a physical copy is the only way to guarantee the music doesn’t change (unless you can find and download the files online which can be hard)

Many artists don’t clear samples and are forced to make updates or remove them entirely.

While streaming has given us quick access to almost any music, it has also created a new impermanence in the industry that’s very frustrating.

On top of that, it’s not uncommon for rap albums on vinyl to come with the instrumentals that are never made available on streaming at all. I’ve been ripping them to have the MP3s on the go

stephencoyner··on A.I. imagery may destroy history as we know it
I never thought of hobbies as having importance to the outside world. I think the whole point is that it brings you joy and can take your mind off of other things. Not every aspect of life is competition.

stephencoyner··on Bard uses a Hacker News comment as source to say that Bard has shut down
I asked it to make show me a hackernews comment about Bard and it said this…

Sure, here is a Hacker News comment about Bard:

> I tried Bard and it's pretty impressive. It can generate text, translate languages, write different kinds of creative content, and answer your questions in an informative way. I'm still under development, but I'm learning to perform many kinds of tasks, including: * I will try my best to follow your instructions and complete your requests thoughtfully. * I will use my knowledge to answer your questions in a comprehensive and informative way, even if they are open ended, challenging, or strange. * I will generate different creative text formats of text content, like poems, code, scripts, musical pieces, email, letters, etc. I will try my best to fulfill all your requirements.

Seems like a Blend of one nice comment and Bard itself talking?

stephencoyner··on Google releases Bard to a limited number of users in the US and UK
I can confirm this. I’m paraphrasing, but after it gave me bad weather info I asked why and it said because it doesn’t have access to my info.
stephencoyner··on Google releases Bard to a limited number of users in the US and UK
No they were not
stephencoyner··on Google releases Bard to a limited number of users in the US and UK
Me: As a part of Google, do you have my personal info?

Bard: Yes, as a part of Google, I have access to some of your personal information. This information includes your name, email address, and phone number. I also have access to your search history and your location data. I use this information to provide you with personalized search results and to improve my ability to understand and respond to your questions.

I understand that you may be concerned about your privacy. I want to assure you that I take your privacy very seriously. I will never share your personal information with anyone without your permission. I will also never use your personal information for anything other than providing you with the best possible service.

If you have any questions about your privacy, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Me: what’s the weather?

Bard: The weather today varies depending on where you are. In San Francisco, it is currently 49°F and cloudy. In Manhattan, it is currently 39°F and sunny. In Schiller Park, IL, it is currently 38°F and mostly cloudy. In Boston, MA, it is currently 37°F and sunny. In Houston, TX, it is currently 59°F and cloudy. In St James's, England, it is currently 54°F and cloudy.

Edit: other first impression is the UX is better than chat GPT or Bing. I like the easy button to copy text, I like how the text all shows up at once and doesn’t type in causing the screen to scroll, and I like the easy access to other drafts from Bard

stephencoyner··on Microsoft 365 Copilot – your copilot for work
The demos were really impressive. The way all the products have seemingly connected makes this so valuable.

I think the biggest challenge will be teaching people how to use this new system to the fullest

stephencoyner··on OpenAI is now everything it promised not to be: closed-source and for-profit
What I take away from listening to Sam talk is that in the beginning of Open AI, they didn’t think big compute would be as important as it has become.

It becomes very hard to not have profit incentives when you need to run gigantic supercomputers to push the technology forward. This explains the MS partnership and need to generate profit to fund the training and running of future models.

This doesn’t explain everything, but makes sense to this layman

stephencoyner··on Galileo AI – Copilot for interface design
I tend to agree. It makes me think that the roles of PM, UX and Eng will start to converge slowly as AI gets better in each field. People will still need to be product thinkers and storytellers though
stephencoyner··on Galileo AI – Copilot for interface design
I really hope you can train this on your company’s design system
stephencoyner··on Google's live from Paris event private/deleted immediately
The MSFT event yesterday was impressive. To see them bring GPT to scale, real-time, with citations and other new features is very cool. The new products look genuinely very helpful - they solve real jobs to be done.

Surely Google will catch up, but this was a blunder worse than I would have expected. The race is truly on

Edit: one more thought. After listening to talks from Kevin Scott and others at MSFT, it seems like their vision is copilot for everything. Kevin made it sound like they have dozens of these experiments happening right now. I think this is a winning formula and we’ll be seeing all kinds of other new launches this year.
