stepbeek··on US on track to set record in 2023 for mass killings after series of shootings
Why does it need to be by race?
stepbeek··on US on track to set record in 2023 for mass killings after series of shootings
Didn’t Australia do this? Or are you saying that the US is unique in gun culture? Not rhetorical, I’m genuinely interested.
stepbeek··on US on track to set record in 2023 for mass killings after series of shootings
Why the filter on race? And why are you comparing a rate in a subset of US population to the rate for the entire population in other countries?

Edit: typo

stepbeek··on Shopify to lay off 20% of staff
> Everyone will receive a minimum of 16 weeks severance plus a week for every year they worked at the company.

It's a bummer that they're having to make mass layoffs (again), but I'm glad they're offering decent severance.

stepbeek··on Tuql: Automatically create a GraphQL server from a SQLite database
You can deploy a docker container to heroku, digitalocean app platform etc. no helm config required.
stepbeek··on Gradle still sucks
The last time I used maven I found it to be painfully slow in comparison to gradle. Has this improved? I switched to gradle in 2015 and that was a pretty big motivation at the time.
stepbeek··on Keep the monolith, but split the workloads
And it’s incredibly difficult to work with a distributed monolith. I find that the joy I get from development just fades completely when even trivial changes involve too much faff.
stepbeek··on Offline is just online with extreme latency
> I think that optimistic UI isn't more complex to build: it's just less familiar.

Having multiple records of state that have to be resolved when systems come online is complex. Anything requiring consensus is difficult to do.

stepbeek··on What it feels like to work in AI right now
Data entry is a really interesting one to me. We’ve been replacing a legacy (read > 1 MLoC with no tests), system on and off for a few years. The original system had a ton of double entry or manual data entry and the human error rate is noticeable. If GPT could have automated this with a similar or reduced error rate then we would have considered it a win.

The real win long term remains killing off manual entry any time it’s possible, but GPT offers a nice patch.

stepbeek··on MRSK vs. Fly.io
Nomad requires a control plane that you actively maintain though. I’d argue that running a container on a VM is significantly simpler.
stepbeek··on Why I stopped using an external monitor
I guess it’s true: there is no generalization that’s absolutely true including this one.
stepbeek··on Ask HN: Is anyone else having network issues with Azure?
If anyone comes across this, our issues are being causes by intermittent network issues in the New York data center of NordLayer - our VPN provider. Their status page is green but customer service has confirmed that there is an issue.
stepbeek··on Lights have been on at this school for a year because no one can turn them off
And have that employee be a part of the local community, rather than funneling money off to a distant corporation.
stepbeek··on Alpine.js
I have. We used stimulusjs otherwise and wrote a controller that took in a component name and JSON props (embedded in HTML as a data attribute).

It works well. You end up with HTML like:

<div data-controller=“component” data-name-component-value”example” data-props-component-value=“{a: 1}”></div>

stepbeek··on Write admin tools from day one (2022)
My only gripe with tools like this is that I go through a bunch of effort to enforce invariants in code which don’t transfer over.

Sone invariants are easily expressed in the schema, but others (e.g. anything involving a join) are not.

stepbeek··on US Teases 'Major' Science News Amid Fusion Energy Reports
Energy transport over long distances is difficult and inefficient iirc. While sone energy storage ships well (like hydrogen) it’s unlikely that there’ll be intercontinental electrical lines. Not an electrical engineer so happy to be told I’m wrong.
stepbeek··on Low nutritional quality in vegetarian meat substitutes
I eat 3,000-4,000 calories/day (I’m reasonably lean at 105kg body weight). Eating that many legumes just leads to bloating in my experience, which makes getting enough protein entirely from that source tricky. I’ve done it, but I found it impacted sleep quality.

I’ve found a liter of chocolate milk after training to be the best low-cost solution to topping off protein. My gym-bro understanding of metabolism justifies this as a way to replenish glycogen post-workout.

stepbeek··on Low nutritional quality in vegetarian meat substitutes
I aim for 1.5g/kg and don’t eat meat most days. I need to actively plan to meet that protein intake. I don’t use meat substitutes if I can help it, but they do make it significantly easier to get protein.
stepbeek··on 83% of Developers Suffer from Burnout, Haystack Analytics Study Finds
I hated this at Amazon. The rest of the year we’d all be so pleased by our frequent deployments. Then for half of Q4 we’d be in code freeze but would be pressured to pile up feature work to go out in Q1. At least weblabs made feature flags easy.
stepbeek··on 83% of Developers Suffer from Burnout, Haystack Analytics Study Finds
If you’re building large new features on a product then I really recommend Shape Up’s model. Long period of driving the build followed by an explicit cool off period. They recommend 6 weeks of build followed by 2 weeks to cool off, but we’re such a small team that we halved this and found it worked way better - it’s four weeks which is an easier transition from two week sprints imo.

It gives time to just polish off those little rough edges that build up over time and gives developers a lull in which to work on low stress 9-4.30 kind of work.

stepbeek··on Act: Run your GitHub Actions locally
Yes! We use gradle as much as possible to accomplish the same thing. CI runs ‘gradle build’ and it’s easily migrated in future if need be.
stepbeek··on Have we been getting children’s playthings all wrong?
Hofstadter’s headline.
stepbeek··on The Carcinization of Go Programs
I know that the use of cat isn't technically required, but I still build bash oneliners step-by-step and find starting with `cat foo` to be a helpful reminder of the format of the file.
stepbeek··on Mohammed bin Salman: Saudi leader given US immunity over Khashoggi killing
Not sure that I prefer war to diplomatic immunity.
stepbeek··on Mohammed bin Salman: Saudi leader given US immunity over Khashoggi killing
iirc long range transfer of electricity is extremely expensive and difficult. They might be able to supply power locally, but they wouldn’t be able to export to the west. Unless they used it to power manufacture of other fuel sources like green hydrogen.
stepbeek··on Life after Heroku: What's a dev to do?
There are plenty of reasons to dunk on Heroku from the last year. I’m not sure why asking customers to pay for hosting us one of them.
stepbeek··on My next Mac might be the last
I live semi-rurally with really crappy ADSL available. Starlink was a god-send. The number of projects that require extremely good connectivity is really surprising. In particular, I was surprised by how much docker pull struggles on a poor connection.
stepbeek··on How Faithful Is Amazon’s Rings of Power to JRR Tolkien’s Books?
Re-reading the books right now and I totally understand most of the changes. It’s not an art house film, they need broad appeal.
stepbeek··on How Faithful Is Amazon’s Rings of Power to JRR Tolkien’s Books?
I think that Rings of Power bangs up against this timeline compression a lot. It feels weird to us that no one is concerned about Sauron - he was just there! But in the canon timeline there were long stretches of time where nothing very interesting happened.

That being said, I would gladly watch a TV series about day-to-day shire life in the third age.
