stefanos82··on We chose OCaml to write Stategraph
Does TypeScript emit machine code? OCaml gives you this option, if you need it.
stefanos82··on The Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund
If you go to the main page and scroll down a bit, you will see the big names having their logos hosted there...
stefanos82··on Ask HN: What are you using for blogging?
I have tried to follow Hugo's development but lost track with its constant evolution and addition of features I do not need...therefore for now I follow a simpler path: I keep my data in markdown files and I plan to switch to asciidoctor for good; it's quite old, it's battle-tested, and offers me many options to produce various forms of output; be it HTML, PDF, ePub, etc...

If O'Reilly trusts it to produce its ebooks, then I'm sure it worthy of my time and effort!

stefanos82··on Ask HN: Who else thinks they should add GOTO statements to Python?
There is an April Fools' joke [1] that demonstrate this and I cannot tell it's readable or not...I personally find it confusing in Python, but not in C's case which can make things clearer, if you use it wisely and in moderation!

stefanos82··on SQLite concurrency and why you should care about it
When hctree [1] becomes stable in SQLite, it will be the only database I will be using lol!

I presume the `hc` part in project's code name should be High Concurrency.

stefanos82··on We Deleted Tokio from Our Payment System and Cut Cloud Costs by $127,000
The first thing I thought when I read this weird article was "wait...do they use their database synchronously in an asynchronous environment or am I missing something here?".

Most of us have been bitten by this naive mistake and I'm sure we have learned our lesson.

stefanos82··on The Joy of Rediscovering Perl
Interesting project! The real question is, how fast does it compile, let's say 10K articles, assuming we have a large website?
stefanos82··on Acrobat is intrusive, slow and non-customizable
As a GNU / Linux Debian user, I personally use many different PDF readers for eccentric reasons lol!

My preference by far is qpdfview, but I also use Okular (KDE), Evince, its fork for MATE desktop environment, Atril, and of course xpdf!

stefanos82··on Photowand – Turn selfies into professional photos with AI
Pieter Levels has already done this and it's scary!

See this link https://photoai.com/ and this link https://interiorai.com/

stefanos82··on Professional Job Seeker might be my only full-time role ever
> the process feels broken.

Yes and no; what do I mean with that...yes, it looks like the system it's fundamentally broken and at the same time, no it's not because it has always been this way, thus the expected output.

The problem with it right now is that history repeat itself, as the current market symptoms are the same (more or less) as those back in 2000 when dot com bubble was about to burst!

They were asking for unrealistic stuff and you could tell from the amount of money poured in the tech industry that something was completely off, which eventually confirmed everyone's suspicion.

I have been looking for a job myself for a while now and let me tell you, it's a complete mad chaos out there, especially with the AI frenzy everyone and their mother is talking about.

Hold on tight, don't stop and keep on looking for anything, until the storm calms down.

Good luck!

stefanos82··on Ask HN: How do you say “I don’t know, but I’ll get back to you” confidently?
Tell them that you are slow thinker and you need your time to think thoroughly so you can come back with answers.

If they don't believe you, tell them Derek Sivers, the CD Baby creator is also a slow thinker https://sive.rs/slow

stefanos82··on Calling your boss a dickhead is not a sackable offence, UK tribunal rules
The last thing I expected was to get downvoted for just saying "English language can be a landmine if you are not careful, especially as a foreigner! lol".

English language uses words such as pussy that supposedly mean a cat, but at the same time they interpret it as vagina; another word is the name Dick which also is being used to mean phallus!

...and the best one is spotted dick which is literally a British steamed pudding! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spotted_dick

Meanwhile, I get downvoted for commenting the obvious thing which is, English language is absurdly confusing for me as a foreigner and have no idea what to say without offending every English speaker!

stefanos82··on Go Channels: A Runtime Internals Deep Dive
Not only bookmarked, but also saved as PDF for future reference!

The only "change" I usually do when I save important documents is to use "Andada ht_2015" font which is the most appealing font, at least to my eyes.

Great job Gabor, I love this type of content!

stefanos82··on Ask HN: Redis V8 vs. competition? (Valkey, Dragonfly, etc.)
It's weird that you did not find this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hDvWVJtljE

Anton is doing an incredible job with his tests at such level, even antirez commented about his performance findings and have informed the dev team to provide possible fixes in Redis 8.

stefanos82··on Show HN: The Boot.dev Training Grounds
As much as I love watching theprimeagen during leisure time, personally I think he loses control out of sheer enthusiasm and instead of teaching you, which is his original intention, he just shows off with fast typing, shouting like a goofball, and bounces up and down like hyper-caffeinated person which distracts me, let alone to take him seriously.

Just watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FknTw9bJsXM which is such an important topic, yet I have very hard time following...I prefer the format of pluralsight and the old lynda.com style of teaching.

stefanos82··on Claude's GitHub: two issues closed by AI as "duplicates" – of each other..!
Sorry, I couldn't resist; I had to take my chance to comment to this masterpiece in issues, lol!
stefanos82··on Ask HN: I just abandoned my PyCharm subscription, what should I use now?
Bram died 2 years ago (already(!!!), time flies!), so it's not so recently...

Also the community does an incredible job and it's quite active with further development and improvements, especially in improving the Vim9 script engine among many things they work on.

If you don't believe me, just see for yourself https://github.com/vim/vim/commits/master/

stefanos82··on Waitgroups: What they are, how to use them and what changed with Go 1.25
Thank you @listeria, today I learned about struct embedding lol!
stefanos82··on Waitgroups: What they are, how to use them and what changed with Go 1.25
This is really amazing, thank you so much!
stefanos82··on Waitgroups: What they are, how to use them and what changed with Go 1.25
Can you provide an example please?
stefanos82··on Waitgroups: What they are, how to use them and what changed with Go 1.25
Personally I wished they had it backported to previous versions too, because it's rather convenient!

What is quite sad is that we cannot add it ourselves as it's so simple of what they have done:

    func (wg *WaitGroup) Go(f func()) {
        wg.Add(1)
        go func() {
            defer wg.Done()
           f()
        }()
    }

stefanos82··on We Hired Soham Parekh
It's really sad to see people with an expressiveness problem not being able to perform in an interview, so that they can work in different companies gaining professional experience, and on the other hand to see some guys mocking the system in order to be recruited by different companies and with great success.
