steejk··on Show HN: BullSniff – Sniff out bullshit AI sites
The number of AI generated websites and businesses, with no substance, seems to be getting worse and worse. So I decided to make a Chrome extension that will be able to sniff out the BS - BullSniff! It analyses the content and design for common AI fingerprints as well as doing deeper due diligence on items such as the domain. The extension itself was evaluated on a corpus of known legitimate and AI slop sites. Try it out and let me know how well it works!

TrustFlight | Leamington Spa, UK (ONSITE) | Full Stack/Front-End Developer & UI/UX Designer | £30-60k + equity

TrustFlight is UK startup working to accelerate the adoption of digital flight & maintenance records in the aviation industry by providing intuitive and automated software. Moving a highly regulated industry away from paper records is challenging, but our platform provides a robust solution to this problem with friendly UI and is powered by modern technologies.

We’re currently looking for developers (front end, back end and full stack), UI/UX designers and analyst graduate roles, but we’re keen to hear from anyone who thinks they have something to offer even if we’re not specifically targeting the role you fill. If you have enthusiasm for what you do and are willing to take on new challenges, then we’d love to hear from you. Experience with, or an interest in, any of the following would be beneficial:

- React, Node.js or other front-end development - Ruby on Rails, either as just an API server or a full-stack system - Designing interfaces with user experience in mind - Mobile development on iOS or Android platforms - Machine learning / data science

As a company, we’re small, but growing fast, having just moved into a new office in the centre of Leamington Spa and are looking for people to join our dedicated team. We have modern working practices, promoting flexible working and continuous development of all of our staff members. Even as a small company, we’re interested in hiring the best, so salaries are all very competitive with larger companies for the given candidate’s skill level.

steejk··on British Airways: Computer problems cause flight delays
Seems pretty major. I'm currently stuck on a flight that can't depart as they can't get any flight plans etc. Also BA's main website is down.
steejk··on The Risk of Discovery
This is similar to what Ben Thompson just wrote about [1]. It's easy to forget the bets, such as Apple TV, that weren't so successful.

[1] https://stratechery.com/2017/the-ten-year-anniversary-of-the...

steejk··on MacBook Pro
Agreed. To me all the demos of the touch bar looked awkward and could've been replaced with far better functionality using a touchscreen.

Hopefully it's more appealing when actually using it.

steejk··on Ask HN: Suggestions for chat bot frameworks?
It depends what you want to do. If you want to access many chat apps a framework will make your life easier and provide some features such as analytics but at the expense of latency and inability to access any features specific to a particular chat application.

Wit.ai, API.ai etc. are separate services to which you forward your chat responses and they send back a response based NLP training etc.

If you're just doing a prototype, I would limit it to one chat app (eg. FB messenger) and interact directly with their webhook. You can also then add NLP through api.ai etc.

steejk··on Kreisel Electric takes on Tesla
There's a cultural difference among traditional automakers in which new innovations are withheld from being released as they are not required to maintain a competitive position. This is very different from the attitude in the Valley/startups in which there appears to be a genuine desire to advance innovation of mankind.
steejk··on Kreisel Electric takes on Tesla
To a certain extent, this comes from historically creating safety-critical software which is an entirely different process compared to what is done for web apps etc. I don't think Tesla are as robust with their development processes, but they are able to make up for it with over-the-air updates.
steejk··on Will Amazon Kill FedEx?
Wow, this is something I've been thinking about recently. Would be very interested in seeing how this progresses.
steejk··on First Tesla Taxi in America after 100k miles
Most EV batteries have a total capacity greater than the usable capacity as some is reserved for degradation - this means you shouldn't experience much (if any) capacity loss until 10years+ of usage. The one to look out for is the P90D which will likely suffer increased degradation in Ludicrous mode.
steejk··on Inside Tesla's gigantic Gigafactory
Range is not solely due to the battery pack; weight, frontal area and drag have a big impact.

Nonetheless $20k is high for a 200 mile pack even today. It should be around half the cost.

steejk··on Q&A with Aaron Levie
I wouldn't say it's anything revolutionary, but more just rewording of classic strategy. In short it's 'differentiate and don't compete with existing products in existing markets'.
steejk··on Self-Driving Tesla Was Involved in Fatal Crash, U.S. Says
This was inevitable given Tesla calling the system an 'Autopilot', when in fact the driver must have their hands on the wheel and monitoring full time.
steejk··on Internal startups: there is no success, only failure
Too much weight is put on ideas and this is what internal startups focus on. In most cases, either current employees or new contractors are brought in to run the startup. This is doomed to fail as those executing have no incentive or investment in the idea or it's success.
steejk··on Ask HN: When starting a new product build, how do you write out technical specs?
Not software engineering, but we (big corp) use IBM DOORs [0]. It's not the most intuitive, but the concept is you define feature requirements which cascade down to requirements in sub-levels.

steejk··on Show HN: How far you can go with an electric car
Cool site, but important to note that the EPA range is not very accurate in the real world. Would be interesting if better range approximations could be made using topography etc.
steejk··on CoeLux: Artificial Sunlight That’s Real Enough to Trick Your Camera and Brain
Here's a video of an actual one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lD6VKLoS59g

It does look very realistic, but makes me wonder whether having an uneven light distribution is desirable or whether it's something that's needed to trick the body.

steejk··on Tesla's Model X Was a Mistake
Apart from quality comes from successful integration of all the components together rather than individually.
steejk··on Headphone and Amp Impedance (2011)
I could have done with reading this article a week earlier.

I just built a converter to allow earphones to be used in aircraft audio panel outputs which are typically 150-350 Ohms. Another bizarre thing I learnt is that 1/2" and 1/4" stereo jacks are wired opposite ways.

steejk··on Why don't airlines fly a straight line between Barcelona and Düsseldorf?
Flight routing in Europe is actually quite interesting. Eurocontrol, which controls all the airspace, has an algorithm which either accepts or rejects a route you submit but many times routes are rejected for non obvious reasons.

Due to this, most people use third party software which generates routes and does a brute force search on the Eurocontrol system until one is accepted. When you go ahead and actually fly the routes though, it is pretty common for ATC to give you shortcuts between most sectors.

steejk··on How to Reduce 3D Printing Costs by Cutting Your Files
I remember a few years ago you could order a hollow sphere to be printed by SLS. At the time, the pricing mechanisms would just charge you by the volume of material you use. What wasn't considered was the trapped volume inside the sphere which would contain SLS powder worth much more than the cost quoted!
