steedsofwar··on Show HN: I made a customizable iOS browser for minimalists and myself
This is one of my foremost requirements from a browser these days; how well does it block ads. As much as I like Safari it doesn’t seem to block ads as well as Brave, so Brave is my daily driver.
steedsofwar··on Goodreads was the future of book reviews, then Amazon bought it
Bezos also owns the Washington Post. Make of that what you will.
steedsofwar··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
Not as exciting as some here, but helped me at times where i couldn't be at my desk however still be 'available'.

I developed a 'transport' for Mulesoft, that would allow XMPP based communication, and relay that to my phone either by sms or email, and vice versa. At the time the communication were Jabber based and almost everything was through that, so this worked out quite nicely.

steedsofwar··on The AirPods Pro “Rattlegate”
I'm on my 3rd or 4th pair. The current ones need to be replaced as they rattle, first appearing in the left now the right are progressively following suit.

They are convenient and work well, however the fault rates are incredible. As soon as apple store opens back up I'll be replacing them for 5th time. At this point, I have given up and probably go back to SoundMagic in ears or something with noise cancelling that I can use while riding my motorbike.

PS: I didn't purchase apple care, and my friends/colleagues haven't had any issues.

steedsofwar··on A380 cancellations by Qantas raise new questions about the superjumbo's future
I have a similar view on the A380, but I love being a passenger on them more than any other plane. The extra leg room is what wins over for me and as I fly Emirates the in flight entertainment is brilliant.

For me it’s a shame we are seeing a decline of these planes. I loathe to think the industry is going to go back to less leg room, more seats and feeling like cattle.

steedsofwar··on Google proposes changes to Chromium which would disable uBlock Origin
I love safari, but of late unBlock Origin has stopped working, which means i constantly switch to firefox when the ad's get nauseating.

steedsofwar··on Ask HN: Best-architected open-source business applications worth studying?
Amongst the other great suggestions you could also have a look at Redis (https://redis.io)
steedsofwar··on Google’s Flutter = React and Java Swing
My years of toil with Java Swing makes me shudder every time i hear its wretched name.
steedsofwar··on Imzy is shutting down
This is one of the main reasons i detest pinterest. Lately they have changed, so that you can see small amount of the content, before annoying you with the login screen.
steedsofwar··on Android now supports Kotlin
Keep in mind coroutines is very much experimental, things will change.
steedsofwar··on Android now supports Kotlin
It doesn't need to be a preview version of AS. I'm coding with Kotlin on AS 2.3.1 and IntelliJ 16. Just make sure you configure kotlin for the project, easily done, by creating a kotlin file.
steedsofwar··on Secrets of the Glasgow Haskell Compiler Inliner (1999) [pdf]
He was my professor at university, came in one day with shirt, tie and sandals. Took in a deep breath, and shouted it's a beautiful sunny day today.
steedsofwar··on What terrible treatment have you seen in the workplace?
When i graduated, my manager would often come over to me on a Thursday and say he needed my work done my Monday. Which inevitably meant i would be in the office over the weekend. This happened for 6 weeks straight. That's right, every single day i worked, there were no weekends for naive old me.

On the beginning of the 7th week, i had a twitch in my eye and i could smell death. I broke and handed in my notice, my ceo refused, then accepted after he spoke to the manager. The manager had a word with me, and told me that they were going to fire me anyways. What a nice guy.

steedsofwar··on Programming Doesn’t Require Talent or Even Passion
This resonates with me to an extent. I get easily bored with the mundane day to day tasks in the language i'm forced to use. There is an occasional spark of passion when i come across something of interest. Other than that i day dream of other programming languages, solving problems that have an impact on my fellow humans.

The passion was driven out of me by the need to pay the bills. I'd like to think that i'm a gun for hire, unfortunately i'm more like the tap. When there's a need it's used, nothing more, nothing less.

I wish i could do something more exciting with my skills.

steedsofwar··on Go vs. Swift [pdf]
Coming from an IntelliJ background, one thing that irks me the most when using XCode is: i need to click on the red dot symbol to see the error. For the love of God, just display the error, why do i need to move my hand away from the keyboard to the mouse. It just annoys me enough to lose my coding mojo.
steedsofwar··on Show HN: Privacy-focused, ad-free, non-tracking torrent search engine
I love this! Vote for a feature, is fantastic!
steedsofwar··on Launchaco – Instantly generate a responsive, free, website
It really tends to me an afterthought. A lot of places that i've worked for, accessibility is never factored with estimates. If it does make it, it's a rushed job, or it never makes it and after few complaints, it's added as needed.
steedsofwar··on Launchaco – Instantly generate a responsive, free, website
I am a software developer/engineer/<whatever the new fad is>, and i am the only "computer guy" in the family. So i've been tasked to create a website for a bakery startup. I couldn't agree more with the previous comment, about creating a website as being a momentum killer!

So when i saw this, my initial thoughts were, hmmm another one of 'those' sites. However i'm pleasanlty surprised, sure the elements aren't perfect, and the colours could be more varied, but it's an almost complete site. Replace the graphics, the fonts and text, i'm good to go! I just need to focus on the content and not the boiler plate crap.

Thank you!

steedsofwar··on Show HN: Gomix the easiest way to build apps and bots
This was my exact thought, when i tried to sign up. I'm curious about this service but not enough to sign up to github to access this service.
steedsofwar··on Ask HN: Do you still use UML?
In the last 16 years (i've worked at over 10 companies) i've only had one company use UML and it was only for an overview of the proposed architecture.
steedsofwar··on Creating a Redis Module in 15 Lines of Code
I use redis for a multiplayer mobile game. Stores user details, game scores, global leaderboard and randomly generated game data that exists for the time of a single game.
steedsofwar··on Show HN: HackerNews vs. /r/Programming – A Live Analysis of Top Posts
Seems to be broken, i only see NaN where there should be numbers e.g. Reddit (NaN%) | HackerNews (NaN%)
steedsofwar··on Show HN: Mohsen the Doorman – Half Slack, Half RaspberryPi
How about, controlling:

The lights, A/C, or adding a webcam to your door

steedsofwar··on How JetBrains Lost Years of Customer Loyalty in Just a Few Hours
This isn't new, well for intelliJ at least. I bought IJ 12x, and was a little saddened when they changed to the sub model. However it's still a great tool and i prefer it over the others, therefore still use it. It just means i'm forced to use the community edition, or EAP.

Loyalty is as good as the product; if another product comes along and makes my life easier i would switch.

steedsofwar··on IBM Devs did an AMA on Reddit and it got ugly, fast
Couldn't agree more, release sh!t products you'll get that response, especially when most are forced to use said products by their respective workplaces. It was a terrible AMA for the IBMers, they could have been more honest, but i don't think that would have swayed the mass of discontent.
steedsofwar··on Ask HN: Has anyone here programmed in Kotlin? What do you think about it?
This may provide some insight:

http://blog.jetbrains.com/kotlin/2011/08/why-jetbrains-needs...

The nice thing about that post is that they (Jetbrains) are pretty honest about the whole things e.g.

"First and foremost, it’s about our own productivity."

"The next thing is also fairly straightforward: we expect Kotlin to drive the sales of IntelliJ IDEA. "

"The final point is less obvious but still important: new programming languages is a topic that many people really enjoy talking about, and the first days that have passed since we’ve unveiled Kotlin prove that."

"And we’d like to reiterate that our work on Kotlin does not in any way affect our investment into other development tools, and in particular the Scala plugin. If you’re already happy with Scala and have no need for another new language, we’ll continue to do our best providing you with first-class Scala development tooling."

steedsofwar··on Ask HN: Has anyone here programmed in Kotlin? What do you think about it?
pm me :)
steedsofwar··on Ask HN: Has anyone here programmed in Kotlin? What do you think about it?
Yes, I've used kotlin to replace a large legacy Java application. Pretty critical to the business, sat in the middle interacting with. All upstream and downstream systems.

Kotlin certain ly made life easier in some places, most importantly it was fast and easy and a joy to work with.

steedsofwar··on Gemalto's findings of its investigations into the alleged hacking of SIM cards
At this point, i suspect it's damage limitation.
