std_throwaway··on Latest 737 Max Fault That Alarmed Test Pilots Rooted in Software
Does being qualified grant you access to the code right now? Who decides if you're qualified and if permission is granted?

I assume that currently there's several gatekeepers involved who can shut most independent investigators out.

std_throwaway··on Latest 737 Max Fault That Alarmed Test Pilots Rooted in Software
Closed source software should not be used in safety critical systems that affect the general public.
std_throwaway··on What Microsoft’s revival can teach other tech companies
I learned that you can change your public image to suit your current needs in whatever way you want and people will soon forget the past.

Soon, Microsoft will have always been a big supporter of open source in the minds of most people.

Yes, for those who need to hide their code from public scrunity.

std_throwaway··on Boeing May Halt 737 Max Production
If you think they could pressure the FAA, do you also think they could pressure the EASA and CAAC?
std_throwaway··on Boeing May Halt 737 Max Production
Safety IS first. If it's not safe it won't fly no matter how cheap it is. This is clearly a case where engineers were proposing an inferior solution that allowed a lower price point. They mislead the whole company and let their colleagues down.
std_throwaway··on Boeing May Halt 737 Max Production
Maybe engineers would be more careful if they were held liable for the faulty designs they produce. This safety system wasn't designed by marketing. It was designed by engineers and deemed sufficient. Several people signed off on it. Boeing is working hard on rectifying every possible flaw and it is doing so under close scrunity. Blame shifting won't help us to get out of this mess and get those planes flying again. Now is the time to work out a solution with the regulators and get those planes delivered to the customers who eagerly await them.

They have a lot of orders to fulfill.

My financial advisor says that poor people should start buying more houses so they can keep up with rising prices.

std_throwaway··on Sandstorm is an open source platform for self-hosting web apps
Is there any active project that takes the torch?

I very much like to be able to own my data and run my apps in the future.

std_throwaway··on Statement on 32-bit i386 packages for Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04 LTS
The software has already been produced. Games are a kind of art and "outdated systems" are needed to play them. Nobody would say that we shouldn't produce the instruments needed to play classical music since there has been plenty of time to do so in the past and when somebody wants to listen to it they should use digital recordings instead.
std_throwaway··on AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Beats Intel’s Core i7-9700K in Cinebench
Usually it works without problems. Check with the mainboard manufacturer if it supports ECC memory. Most do, some don't.
std_throwaway··on AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Beats Intel’s Core i7-9700K in Cinebench
I'll wait till the embargo is lifted and detailed benchmarking will be available.

The date is rumored to be the 7th of July.

std_throwaway··on Genetically Engineered Wheat Found in Unplanted Washington Field
We were told they could and would contain it to the designated fields. We were told that we should not worry about it spreading.
std_throwaway··on The shittiest project I ever worked on (2013)
It's clients all the way down. Primarily you satisfy the one who gives you money today. Everything else is primarily their problem.
std_throwaway··on Apple introduces 8-core MacBook Pro
Last I heard someone else has the patent. Not Apple. Maybe someone with background information can shed light on the story.
std_throwaway··on Preventing the Collapse of Civilization [video]
At my workplace when I ask about why some process parameters are this way it usually leads to a dead end where the people who know are long gone and those who should know don't know the essentials. Everything is kind of interconnected and errors show up months later so you can't really change anything on any machine until the machine as a whole breaks and needs to be replaced. Then you try to get it to work somehow and those parameters are then set forever.
std_throwaway··on Preventing the Collapse of Civilization [video]
> Lack of inter-generational knowledge transfer doesn't cut it. Most of the people who rolled this stuff are still alive.

I think he means generations in terms of the workplace/politics where you can have a generation change every few years. Meaning that most old guys go and new guys come. Technically you could ask the old guys because most are still alive but it doesn't happen for a lot of different reasons.

std_throwaway··on Limits on Matrix Multiplication
It seems that not very many mathematicians are working on optimizing this problem but matrix multiplication used every day by many people and companies.

Did we already exhaust economics of scale on this one?

std_throwaway··on How to use LEDs to detect light
LEDs usually are not very good photodiodes. You optimize them differently for each usage. In abstract theory the perfect photodiode and the perfect LED would be the same but in reality there are more tradeoffs and you end up with different devices.
std_throwaway··on Dietary carbohydrate intake and mortality: a prospective cohort study
Who uses a certain (previously uncommon) diet that is said to help with diabetes and other serious issues? Those who are of average good health or those who experience some issues that already start to manifest? I wonder if the study corrects for those factors. Does the average person even participate in those studies?

We really need multiple long-running (50+ years) randomized study that controls for all influence factors to really answer the questions. Something that is unlikely to be accomplished in our current political lifetime and unlikely to be completed within our lifetime.

std_throwaway··on SQLite – The “server-process-edition” branch
The branch

looks active.

I would hesitate to integrate such a feature into mainline prematurely. If you really need it you can use the branch.
