stcroixx··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
Skilled programmers working on boring stuff like office. Most programmers today don't have the skills they think they do and would find working on something like Office boring.
stcroixx··on Everything we announced at our first LlamaCon
Dumb fucks is what the founder of the company has thought about it's users since day 1. They've been caught lying to cover up terrible things they've done so many times it's just assumed at this point. Anyone relying on their services is being taken advantage of first by Meta, and then by their own failed economy that won't provide an alternative. I've never once considered what Europe thinks.
stcroixx··on Ask HN: My CEO wants to go hard on AI. What do I do?
Splintered streaming services cost more than a cable package used to.
stcroixx··on Software engineering job openings hit five-year low?
Some are H1B fraud where they already have the person they want and advertise and interview to fool USCIS.
stcroixx··on AI killed the tech interview. Now what?
I've had a great career and very positive feedback from every employer. I would do absolutely terrible in this kind of interview.
stcroixx··on Trump administration to fire thousands at health agencies
Well, we're pretty unhealthy. These agencies don't seem to have been very successful at making us healthy. Probably time to try another approach.
stcroixx··on Beej's Guide to Git
I was a developer for a long time before git and used many different VC systems. Didn't need to read the book on any of them and had no problems. For most cases, VC is simple. Git is just designed for this complicated case that applies to a tiny sliver of developers. I've never once pushed to more than one remote in like 10-15 years of using it.
stcroixx··on Beej's Guide to Git
Spot on. I think it won because of who created it. I love linux and have been a daily user for like 25 years, but that doesn't mean I'm going to have a positive bias towards new tools or projects Linus makes like git. I think had some no name developed this it would have been laughed at by the majority of devs because, as you say, it's target use case is very specific and rare making it the wrong tool for most of us. Might have the worst interface I've ever seen. Before using it, I spent close to zero time thinking about version control and didn't need to understand anything about it's internals and had zero problems in the software dev lifecycle. Now, people are proud to waste time learning implementation details of their version control tool?
stcroixx··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
The US has planned for that scenario by heavily investing in defense to minimize risk to our security even if our allies abandon us. The rest of the NATO alliance does not appear to have done this and appears quite vulnerable. I know where I'd rather be.
stcroixx··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
I do everything in my power to stop the US from funding Israel and any foreign war I think is immoral.
stcroixx··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
Everyone outside China saw tankman and the other protesters get killed by the CCP in 1989. I think another group of brave Chinese like them will one day succeed in defeating the CCP and China will be welcomed into the international community.
stcroixx··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
Maybe, but I don't think that would be the outcome. It's a risk I'd be willing to take. Personally I'd never side with communists for any reason at all, even if it meant my life became a little more difficult.
stcroixx··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
I don't advocate war, but I'd prefer a relationship similar to Russia or North Korea. No trade whatsoever. No trade with nations that trade with China.
stcroixx··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
The US and most of Europe share a military alliance. The US and China are adversaries.
stcroixx··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
Do you dispute the persecution of Uyghurs in China? The UN, US Dept. of State, House of Commons in the UK and Canada, Dutch Parliament, French National Assembly, New Zealand, Belgium, and the Czech Republic?

This is not a government to be friends with. It's time we go our separate ways from the CCP.

stcroixx··on Some things to expect in 2025
Yes, I've worked on small teams of highly experienced people where code reviews may only happen a couple times a year for the purpose of knowledge transfer. This is how I've seen it work on what I would consider the most critical and best performing code I've been exposed to. High volume, high stakes stuff in finance and health care.
stcroixx··on Some things to expect in 2025
The kind of work you're describing doesn't benefit the company, it benefits the individual. It's not what they were hired to do. The poor quality code they produce can be a net negative when it causes bugs, maintenance issues, etc. I think it's always the right choice to boot such a person from any company once they've been identified.
stcroixx··on Some things to expect in 2025
This is the norm on my majority H1B team. Nobody sees anything wrong with it but me so I stopped caring too.
stcroixx··on Walgreens says locking up products to prevent shoplifting hurts sales
This really only happens in states where the majority of residents share an ideology that criminals shouldn't be held responsible for their actions.
stcroixx··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
Indians don't coast like Euros. Average standard of living is much lower in India which motivates them to do things to raise it.
stcroixx··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
Toys? Not a priority. RCAT is the best American drone company. I won't disagree communists can produce efficiently, but that comes with a culture that guns down their own like the protesters in Tiananmen square.
stcroixx··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
I don't think it's a problem. What's preventing other countries from building something similar to the US tech companies is a combination of regulation and culture.
stcroixx··on What made Dostoevsky's work immortal
In the event that happens, and I'd not be surprised, I'd still expect him to remain just as popular with readers.
stcroixx··on Google stops letting sites like Forbes rule search for "Best CBD Gummies"
All the developers I work with have stopped using Google search entirely in favor of ChatGPT. Even my wife prefers it after seeing how bad googles results are and full of ads.
stcroixx··on The Rise of Malört, an Unexpected Midwest princess
I like it too. Reminds me of Akavit, which I love.
stcroixx··on On Building Git for Lawyers
You would have to improve the interface substantially. I've been a developer for over 25 years, have used Linux as a daily driver for as long, and I can't stand using it. Only software developers would tolerate it.
stcroixx··on Ask HN: How to deal with a serious mental health breakdown?
In the US there just isn't the infrastructure to deal with this. We used to have places people could be committed to against their will so they could get help. The few places like this that are left can't function effectively due to being overloaded and are more like the county jail. Now these people end up homeless or die.
stcroixx··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Not enough to dissuade the people that like him from voting for him again. It's not like they don't know what it's like to have him in charge.
stcroixx··on Trump wins presidency for second time
We also actually saw very little of Biden during his presidency even during his 2020 campaign. The glimpses we did get often looked alarming regarding his fitness. Then the debate and it couldn't be hidden anymore. Many took this to be the evidence we were lied to for 4 years and don't know who is running the country, which caused the admin to appear very untrustworthy.
stcroixx··on Trump wins presidency for second time
There's also an over supply of these engineers. The H1B program was intended to address a shortage that no longer exists, yet the workers and program remain, ruining the market for citizens.
