stavrianos··on Oops: Azerbaijan released election results before voting had even started
If the data was generated for testing and escaped accidentally, why not say that? Their claim that it's last year's data runs directly counter to this perfectly reasonable explanation.
stavrianos··on Tikker – The wrist watch that counts down your life
Built a toy javascript utility along similar lines about a year ago. Breaks down your expected life remaining into blocks by month: http://novorobo.com/projects/hitpoints/index.html.
stavrianos··on Apple’s Fingerprint ID May Mean You Can’t ‘Take the Fifth’
My understanding was that the right against self-incrimination was largely meant as a patch, to prevent suspects being tortured into confessing by devaluing their confessions. If that's the point, I don't see any reason for a court not to compel a harmless, painless fingerprint swipe.
stavrianos··on German Girl Turned Away at Border Due to Private Facebook Messages
What? No. Because it's the whole point of a government to take care of its citizens. American gov takes care of Americans, Brazillian gov takes care of Brazillians.
stavrianos··on Comcast injecting JS
This at least partially explains the quality of their code.
stavrianos··on The Handshake Deal Protocol
Handshake deals are reliant on trust, which friends/spouses usually have in good supply. This protocol is attempting to add enough formality to lower the trust required somewhat (because people have been welching, so enough trust is not always available), without dropping it all the way to zero (which is what a traditional antagonistic/defensive contract is for).
stavrianos··on Meteor in the Wild: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Reactive Programming
Perhaps an attempt to force/fake font smoothing?
stavrianos··on Meteor in the Wild: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Reactive Programming
For a sufficiently lax definition of "browser", no.

stavrianos··on Show HN: Nowcation - find spontaneous travel deals
Heads up- That faux styled dropdown is very difficult to use with a smartphone.
stavrianos··on An easy to follow design course for programmers

stavrianos··on Thinking of Selling on eBay using Paypal? Think Again
Item not as not as described
stavrianos··on Things I do to be consistently happy
Happiness is a fairly broad category of mental states, which encompasses contentment. Happiness is linked to both a set of internal subjective feelings (impossible to describe, as there's no reference point. See also: the color red), and to a particular set of external behaviours which are consistent across the majority of humans (smiling, laughing, etc). If I wanted to communicate the internal subjective experience of happiness, I'd do it the same way I would the subjective experience of a color- I'd wait until I saw you experiencing it, and then I'd say "That feeling, right there. That's happiness." This is easier with colors, because I could just point to one, but it works with emotions too.

Much like yourself, I tend to think of happiness as a barometer of sorts. If I'm unhappy, it means that something's wrong which needs fixing. It's not hard to see how this perspective can be reversed, though. To say that I seek to be happy and I do so by finding/building a satisfactory environment, or to say that I seek a satisfactory environment and I gauge this via happiness- in practical terms these perspectives are indistinguishable.

stavrianos··on How To Be A Horrible Boss
Worth pointing out that even if you personally did not become what the director expected of you, by leaving you likel brought the remaining team's average closer to the expectation.
stavrianos··on Stomach-turning geo app shamelessly designed to help stalkers prey on "girls"
"Stalker", to me, implies a certain degree of obsession with a particular person. This app is much less discriminating than that- maybe a good tool for a conman, though.
stavrianos··on The Best Birth Control In The World Is For Men
I'm in my mid-twenties, and was seriously considering it when I thought it was reliably reversible. My reading at the time indicated that this wasn't the case and there was a good chance that you'd stay sterile after reversing the operation. This struck me as a very good reason not to get a vasectomy.
stavrianos··on Send Them Your Money: A Campaign to Send The RIAA/MPAA Billions
You sure you can afford this? I wouldn't want to impose.
stavrianos··on Colleges and Employers Demanding Facebook Passwords
This is the correct solution.
stavrianos··on What HN users don't mean to be
In any given exchange, the speaker is likely optimizing both honesty and diplomacy, trading one against the other as the situation requires. The phrase "to be honest" signals that the next bit is going to sacrifice an unusually large amount diplomacy for an unusually large amount of honesty. Or something.

It's a verbal flag and a hedging move. "I am about to say something potentially hurtful, but I am doing it with your best interests at heart, so don't instinctively retaliate" is kind of what it's used for. Reading too deeply into the literal meaning of the words doesn't really go anywhere, any more than with other verbal rituals. Compare to the greeting "How's it going?", often used even when the asker doesn't really want to know how it is going.

stavrianos··on [dead]
So governments are going to shut down bitcoin- as I understand it, this is done by making it illegal to use bitcoin in otherwise legal transactions. That seems like the kind of thing that'd tank the value of bitcoin, making it useless. On the other hand, there aren't too many places that you can spend bitcoin right now anyways- maybe it'd be an empty gesture?
stavrianos··on Orson Scott Card's Amazon Review of Ender's Game
I generally agree, so long as you remember that talk is cheap. If you shouldn't respect someone too much for talking about the great things they'll do, you shouldn't hold it too hard against someone for talking about terrible positions.
stavrianos··on William Gibson's cyberpunk classic 'Neuromancer' may finally get to screens
This is a very plausible prediction. I don't like it. Frankly, more than a little bit of me hopes that this gets bogged down in development hell. If it comes out, I'll go see it, but I can't imagine it living up to the book.
stavrianos··on Cω
I look at those two symbols, and in my head I hear "cow". I know there's only a C and a W, but my brain doesn't care. Maybe it's 'cause the W is kinda roundish? Anyways. "Cow".
stavrianos··on Root molecular cause of declining health in the old found by scientists
careful here- I'm fairly certain there's more to cancer than just tumors.
stavrianos··on When Should I Visit? - A 24 hour hack I made, what do you think?
looks sweet! a comment: before spotting the caption, it isn't obvious if the graph shows business or desirability.
stavrianos··on Live ESP Experiment: Sexual Arousal Going Backwards in Time
I feel like the fact that I can choose how many times to play might throw things? If I were more likely to stop after non-arousing image than after an arousing one, what will that do statistically?
stavrianos··on I haven't used soap or shampoo in a year
Betcha that only works if you match an ancestral diet.
stavrianos··on Minimalist renditions of international brands
These look really good on a solid black background. On a supermarket shelf with hundreds more, some would be downright eerie. Solid red wall of cereal boxes.
stavrianos··on The MacGyver Approach to Winter Biking (Zip Ties)
I did this once- it's a lot trickier to get that set up when you haven't got disk brakes, lemme tell ya. The chains wore out a lot faster than I expected, to the point that it wasn't a practical solution.
stavrianos··on Engineering Is Not Science
My computer science education has been a schizoid mixture of classes geared to the practical, which I think of as "engineering" classes, and classes geared to the theoretical, which I think of as "computer science" classes. The latter are not about a science though, they are about a branch of mathematics.
stavrianos··on Avast sees single software license used illegally 774,651 times
Granted only a fraction would have paid. This is a tracked, measured accounting. I'm pretty sure that the RIAA/MPAA just make numbers up wholesale.
