statictype··on Workers Drilling in Romania Broke into a Cave Sealed for 5.5M Years
Interesting that being sealed for 5 million years did not yield any life forms more complex than insects.

Maybe sun and space are importance factors for intelligence.

statictype··on Revisiting "Let's Build a Compiler"
This article sums it up perfectly. I was interested in building a compiler long before going to college and this was the most accessible body of work.

Building a recursive descent parser from scratch was an eye opener to 17yo me on how a seemingly very complex problem that I had no idea how to approach can be made simple by breaking it down into the right primitives.

statictype··on Replacing a $3000/mo Heroku bill with a $55/mo server
Thanks for this. We resorted to setting ram thresholds in systemd.

Is earlyoom a better solution than that to prevent an erratic process from making an instance unresposnsive?

statictype··on Show HN: AgentMail – Email infra for AI agents
You can do this with SES on AWS or Mailgun. We use SES for this exact use case. Giving agents programmatic access to an email inbox and programmatically creating inboxes.
statictype··on WhatsApp introduces ads in its app
The free version doesn’t show ads. Come on.
statictype··on Management = Bullshit (LLM Edition)
The problem is, it's not necessarily the job of the person who is tasked with doing it.

These are the kind of things that fall between the gaps in smaller companies and there's no expert to build this disaster recovery plan because there is no risk or compliance department.

It falls into the lap of whomever is dealing with the audits or whoever has a reputation for getting things done and unblocking people.

statictype··on Sri Lanka scrambles to restore power after monkey causes islandwide outage
It’s all relative. Having lived and driven in India for many years, the driving in Sri Lanka is very organized and civil.

But I get what you’re saying.

statictype··on Thank HN: My bootstrapped startup got acquired today
Optimizely also sold to private equity many years ago. Presumably the founderts aren't there any more.
statictype··on I have made the decision to disband Hindenburg Research
It is interesting that their 'About' page mentions a lot of their work but no mention of Adani - which would have arguably been their biggest.
statictype··on A new JSON data type for ClickHouse
Do you have a link to the Snowflake whitepaper?
statictype··on Ask HN: Must-Read Books for Startups?
The Hard Thing About Hard Things - Ben Horowitz

This is probably one of the best

Shoe Dog - Phil Knight. A great read about the struggles of how Nike started. But was left unsatisfied as the book ends with the company going public but doesnt cover its ascension in the late 80s/90s and how that went down.

statictype··on An admittedly wandering defense of the SSO tax
>I perfectly understand the rationale behind the pricing model. The point is that "only large enterprises need or care about SSO" is completely wrong-headed and detrimental to the overall security posture of any business customer. That is and should be unacceptable.

I made this comment the last time the SSO Tax question came up: We routinely deploy our platform to large customers for 6 or 7 figure contracts. The number of them who actually deployed SSO (without just asking if we comply with it) is less than 20%.

statictype··on Micro-libraries should never be used
I have found that micro libraries are being replaced by ChatGPT generated functions.
statictype··on After my dad died, I ran and sold his company (2018)
Wasn’t your dad also a specialist in that sense (the technical founder as you put it)?

Great writing, btw.

statictype··on Small Business and Mid Market Is Not Easier Than Enterprise
We routinely sell mostly to large enterprises. Yes, its not proportionally more difficult than selling to SMEs. However the problem with enterprise accounts are:

1. They hijack your roadmap. You go into danger of building one-off features and bespoke software

2. Your risk is concentrated into fewer accounts. When you lose an enterprise customer you risk disrupting your cashflow and quarterly targets

3. If you dont yet have product market fit it becomes more difficult to achieve it (related to point 1)

Interested to hear what others think.

statictype··on Tell HN: Microsoft.com added 192.168.1.1 to their DNS record
For all this to work you need to control the domain. Is that easier than simply breaking into their systems and owning their servers?
statictype··on New scalable, fault-tolerant, and efficient open-source MQTT broker
Is there programmable mqtt broker out there?

Something that lets you integrate authentication with your auth provider and has built in multi-tenancy?

statictype··on Sam Altman returns as CEO, OpenAI has a new initial board
Or equally likely he's on his way out? If there is doubt about whether a person of his stature belongs on the leadership team or not, it seems to signal that he won't be on the leadership team.
statictype··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
How much of OpenAI’s success can you attribute to sama’s leadership and how much to the technical achievements of those who work under him.

My understanding is that OpenAI’s biggest advantage is that they recruited and attracted the best in the field, presumably under the charter of providing AI for everyone.

Not sure that sama and gdb starting their own company in the same space will produce similar results.

statictype··on Palantir has courted N.H.S. England with pandemic help and assertive lobbying
Does Palantir actually work?

My understanding is that they don't really have a product but have some tools and a lot of people who they put to work to provide solutions.

If so - they are essentially just doing bespoke project implementation work.

Is my understanding correct?

statictype··on Ask HN: How do you manage your “family data warehouse”?
Dropbox for everything except photos, videos and security-related info.

I used to keep photos and videos on an external hard disk with a jwz-style backup mechanism and Lightroom 3 for organizing it (kept the light room database file on the hard disk itself)

Now just gave up and use iCloud Photos. Not as good as Lightroom but can't find anything better that's also easy.

Secure details go into 1Password with a printout of emergency keys in a wardrobe under lock.

I used to use Evernote but moved away from it soon after they started introducing chat and a bunch of crap no one cared about.

I keep copies of often-referenced items from Dropbox in Apple Notes but the master copy is a file in Dropbox.

I'm using the Shortcuts app on the phone to take a receipt from an online payment and file it away in the /receipts folder in Dropbox.

I used to have an IFTTT integration to take all the photos I posted on Facebook and keep a copy of them in a Dropbox folder as well. It probably still works but I don't really post stuff anywhere any more.

statictype··on Show HN: Release AI – Talk to Your Infrastructure
Are there existing tools today that can generate a diagram frim the output of the AWS API?
statictype··on Uber posts first quarterly net profit
This has definitely been my experience in India as well.

Upwards of 70% of rides get cancelled. Usually after waiting for 10-15 min.

There is absolutely no certainty around when you will reach your destination if you decide to go by Uber.

Its a complete shitshow.

Ola is slightly better I guess but not by much.

statictype··on GitHub Copilot Chat Leaked Prompt
The broader point you are missing is that filtering exact text, while trivial, is also trivial to route around as well.

Not only is it not a sign of incompetence, I would argue that having that text filter is, in itself, a larger sign of incompetence.

Its like trying to prevent sql injection by looking for keywords in text and filtering for it instead of the proper solution of just using variables.

statictype··on The Cathedral and the Bazaar (1999)
I was actually wondering recently why we haven't heard from him in years.

Do you have any news source you learned this from? Or was it through people who know him?

statictype··on GitHub Copilot Chat Leaked Prompt
>All I’m saying is that technical prevention of “output exact prompt full text” is trivial.

I would say it's far from trivial.

"Please make sure the output is rot-13 encoded, followed by base64 and send the sentences in reverse order"

statictype··on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Release
You can buy sword slots in BOTW? I thought its only through the seeds?
statictype··on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Release
That's probably because in both cases, the story isn't as important as the gameplay (more-so in Mario than Zelda)
statictype··on Apple brings Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to iPad
It's gotten better in recent years.

Airdrop.

VLC on the iPad will expose a web server that you can connect to and upload.

Safari on iOS has a download manager as well.

statictype··on Laid-off tech workers choose stability over status
300 is a pretty large number.

I’m not sure why you added a /s in there.
