staticautomatic··on Modernity has made us allergic
It’s worth a try, but pretty disappointing to be getting an injection every week for a year and not have anything to show for it.
staticautomatic··on In every reported mistaken arrest using facial recognition, person was Black
What a red herring. Whether or not the photographer controls the dynamic range of the film has nothing to do with whether the range is wide enough or whether the film has a density curve suitable for photographing a black person.
staticautomatic··on In every reported mistaken arrest using facial recognition, person was Black
All I can say is that neutral color negative films have more than enough range for a black person in a white dress, and any wedding photographer who had too hard a time nonetheless would soon find themselves no longer photographing black weddings.
staticautomatic··on In every reported mistaken arrest using facial recognition, person was Black
Pretty sure wedding photographers solved this problem a long time ago, though I hope none of them let the facial recognition vampires in on the mysterious secrets of basic lighting and exposure.
staticautomatic··on LK-99: The live online race for a room-temperature superconductor
So we just need some fireworks companies to get after reproducing it, then?
staticautomatic··on The oldest and most expensive rum?
Agreed, if solely based my one vertical Pappy tasting.
staticautomatic··on Byron Bay data breach victim told to pay Adidas, NBA $1.2M by US courts
You still have to argue your way out of notice.
staticautomatic··on Byron Bay data breach victim told to pay Adidas, NBA $1.2M by US courts
Ex parte just means it’s an emergency and you need the court to move fast
staticautomatic··on Whitewater Rafting on the Selway River in Idaho
Is the permit just for rafting or all boating?
staticautomatic··on Toyota claims battery breakthrough in potential boost for electric cars
I would not underestimate the amount of weight behind the development and commercialization of hydrogen technology. Everyone in the oil and gas industry, including natural gas utilities, has a strong incentive to figure out how to make it work.
staticautomatic··on The One Ring card, Magic: The Gathering’s coveted collectible, has been found
Jesus. I remember when they had gone up to a couple hundred bucks and thought that was crazy.
staticautomatic··on American arrested after Canadian airport drug tests gave false positives
The standard IIRC is actually something more like subjectively reasonable good faith belief
staticautomatic··on American arrested after Canadian airport drug tests gave false positives
In the US, the cops essentially get a free pass to make mistaken arrests. The canonical example is arresting someone pursuant to a warrant that the cop thinks exists but doesn’t.
staticautomatic··on LexisNexis is selling personal data to ICE so it can try to predict crimes
As someone who brokered Lexis PII in a past life, what scares me about this is how dirty the data are.

That said, it’s not a loophole. State and federal laws make certain data public or quasi-public for limited purposes, and I can’t think of any reason the government should be prohibited from buying it for one of those purposes. The fourth amendment is designed to prevent the government from collecting information that is distinguished as categorically private by definition.

staticautomatic··on Louisville bank shooter Connor Sturgeon wrote chilling manifesto
Maybe Tennessee doesn’t want to humor a trans person
staticautomatic··on Remembering Bob Lee
I would be profoundly shocked if this kind of fundraising was necessary. Notwithstanding his amicable divorce some years ago, it would probably be quite an understatement to say he had an abundance of money.
staticautomatic··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
All kinds of scary shit happened to me when I lived in Pacific Heights. Really nowhere is safe except maybe Seacliff or something.
staticautomatic··on Johnson and Johnson reaches deal for $8.9B talc settlement
Her performance as a trial lawyer in these cases has been nothing short of average. It’s shocking that she managed to eek out any defense verdicts at all in the underlying litigation.
staticautomatic··on Remembering Bob Lee
Bob was an acquaintance of mine. A crazy dude and a good man. It’s hard to describe the feeling of seeing his face show up on Apple news with this headline.
staticautomatic··on HuggingFace and Open Source AI Meetup in SFO Mar 31st
Gotta be terrible for SEO
staticautomatic··on Epic Games, others accuse Sundar Pichai of violating retention obligations
They’re considered off the record because the content of the call generally becomes hearsay inadmissible to prove the truth of what was said.
staticautomatic··on Kenji López-Alt spent 5 months studying Chicago thin-crust pizza
Yeah and I get that, but I just don’t think TexMex is good, and I grew up in a part of the south where people fully believed it was real Mexican food.
staticautomatic··on Kenji López-Alt spent 5 months studying Chicago thin-crust pizza
Perhaps because everyone here thinks, as I do, “who needs Tex Mex when you have real Mexican food?”
staticautomatic··on Ok, it’s time to freak out about AI
I think the issue is more that we at least recognize humans are fallible. Less so with “algorithms”.
staticautomatic··on Large language models are having their Stable Diffusion moment
Is it still not privacy friendly on Azure?
staticautomatic··on Ask HN: How do you get companies to talk to you about their problems?
If you have (or can get) budget for it, you could just hire a third party. By day I do B2B product and market research at an agency. This kind of research is bread and butter for lots of people at lots of agencies.
staticautomatic··on ChatML: ChatGPT API expects a structured format, called Chat Markup Language
In what way is this a “list of dicts”? It’s an implicitly structured list of dict, str pairs. And it is WEIRD.
staticautomatic··on Microsoft Kosmos-1: A Multimodal Large Language Model
You mean that isn’t the Teams origin story?
staticautomatic··on Neo4j v PureThink legal war could be decided by the name given to license
Not that it works especially well for patents, but I could imagine a RAND licensing scheme for open source contributors that triggers when a license transitions from open to closed.
staticautomatic··on Dell to layoff 6,650 employees as demand for PCs plummets
The grass isn’t much greener. I’ve gone through a number of Lenovo X1s.
