start123··on Ask HN: Idea feedback on cheaper website/API uptime alerting
I agree so, the plan is to roll out slowly, and give it to a handful of customers initially, and then see how the usage and adoption goes from there.
start123··on Ask HN: Idea feedback on cheaper website/API uptime alerting
Not yet, the acquisition strategy would be my next logical step I think. I am not aware of Heroku elements, will check it out. Thanks.
start123··on Ask HN: Idea feedback on cheaper website/API uptime alerting
I used Google docs heavily. I started with a list of 10 uptime monitoring competitors with features, pricing, and weaknesses. I figured out that all of them were charging ludicrous amounts of money to do a simple task like alerts via SMS or email. While they do offer much more features - I realized, after having built a couple of websites that I don't really need fancy features. I also did a SWOT analysis of the idea and where my app would lie in the spectrum, and the amount I could charge to a customer.
start123··on Free Public Transport in Estonia
"So you have 7-year-olds waddling around the city on their own" This. I have seen so many kids going to school alone in Tallinn - quite the opposite of the current generation's helicopter parenting.
start123··on Free Public Transport in Estonia
I cannot imagine going out at night if there was no Bolt/Uber. I pretty much have to walk home or some distance to get a bus. The weather doesn't help either - standing at a bus stop in winter when the next bus is in 20 mins or so is not a pleasant experience.
start123··on Free Public Transport in Estonia
As an expat living as Tallinn resident for a couple of years, here are my two cents

1. Having public transport has a remarkable effect on the quality of life - At any time of the day, I can hop on go to any part of the city without worrying about costs involved. I have started to go out more than sitting at home simply because it's hassle-free.

2. Connectivity and frequency are quite poor if you don't reside in the city centre. It gets even worse (even in the city centre) at night. Majority of residents tend to live in the outskirts and they continue to use private vehicles in spite of free public transport.

3. Short journeys that were covered by foot are now covered by public transport defeating the purpose. Most of the times, I use a bus for half a km even though I can walk that distance quite easily.

4. The population is very low so one can easily find empty seats on most routes.

start123··on I Hope Twitter Goes Away
Twitter was never meant to be a social network. The author himself writes: "Twitter is good for two things: engaging with #Brands, and broadcasting messages", which is what Twitter is good at - a broadcast and a news consumption service. I don't see any other service that tracks realtime events as good as Twitter.
start123··on Show HN: Rakable – Share links privately
Really appreciate your detailed feedback!

I agree, a lot more work has to go into the landing page. I am currently working on it. Regarding the usefulness, I am on almost all social networks, yet when I have to share an interesting link I email or share the links individually on facebook, and I when I have to share the link again at a later point of time, I have to first try to remember where I shared it and then search for it.

I built Rakable to solve my own problem of sharing content. It allows me share, save links with others as well as build a repository of content.

I fully agree that user acquisition is costly, which is why I am taking small steps at a time and validating the product to understand its demand.

Thanks again!

start123··on Show HN: Rakable – Share links privately
This is the first startup that I am launching and the idea behind it is that there is a dearth of place on the web to share link privately with friends and family, and one often resorts to various communication channels like email, facebook or watsapp. Rakable aims to provide a centralized place for all your links.

Future releases will include ability to create groups, attach files etc.

Tell me what you think of Rakable. Will greatly appreciate any feedback!

start123··on Sidr - A jQuery plugin for creating side menus
The plugin currently shifts the main content pane to the right. It would be great if it could reduce its width instead, so the entire content can fit in the screen.
start123··on Indian Court says may "block" Google and Facebook, like China
Being an Indian, I can confidently say that neither Facebook nor Google would be blocked..Ever. Unlike China, India is a democratic country and its media is independent from the clutches of the higher authority. Serious objections would be raised from all quarters if the high court decides to go ahead with the ban.
start123··on How To Get Covered In a Major Tech Blog
I am tech-blogger and I receive a lot of mails from startups. So, I will spell out few tips on how to pitch better.

1. You need to have a story to tell. Don't worry if its not too dramatic, but you need to add that human element. 2. Catchy Subject lines: I remember a mail which had the subject "Two 17 year olds create the first RSS based social networking site". Could never ignore that. 3. Resources: Please provide us with relevant resources like a logo, a screenshot and a press release(if any). 4. About your company: Please tell us a bit about your company, who the founders are, investments made and any press mentions. 5. Do not spam: Do not send more than three mails asking us to feature you. That is frowned upon.

start123··on The Future of Social Networks
After criticizing Facebook for overlapping social circles, Paul Adams joined Facebook last year. He was a Google employee before. And Facebook launched "Facebook Groups" to tackle this very problem.
start123··on The Future of Social Networks
Ya, Facebook has answer for this- "Facebook GROUPS". It lets you separate people based on the connection you have with them. For ex, you could have groups like Family, Friends, Collegeus etc. So that an update is restricted within than circle.
start123··on The Future of Social Networks
"Facebook says that all my friends and contacts are of equal importance to me. They know this isn’t true, but there is no way for me to distinguish between friends I am truly close with or contacts that I met at a conference and felt obliged to accept on Facebook."

Facebook tackles this problem with EdgeRank algorithm that controls the updates that appear in Newsfeeds. EdgeRank takes into consideration the people you interact with the most on Facebook. And I guess, a person interacts a lot with close friends only.

start123··on Indians cry out for Apple's attention
900$ is when you have a carrier plan. There are two carriers in India which sell the iPhone at that rate. Again, anything around 600$ would have done wonders to Apple in India. I myself would have bought it!
start123··on Indians cry out for Apple's attention
Apple iPhone costs about $900 in India which is ridiculosly high than its American price.
