stargrazer··on Ask HN: What are good books/blogs to read for a first time CTO?
Coincidentally, this showed up on my Twitter timeline just now:

https://github.com/kuchin/awesome-cto - A curated and opinionated list of resources for Chief Technology Officers and VP R&D, with the emphasis on startups and hyper-growth companies.

Someone else beat me to the link.

stargrazer··on Aura FPGA: The Replacement of YM2151
This document discusses the FM sound synthesis in the Commander X16 and in my x65 computer. Sound in Commander X16.

Sound in Commander X16 is generated by two sources that are mixed together: 1) by the Programmable Sound Generator (PSG) in VERA FPGA, and 2) by the MIDI FM-synthesis chip YM2151.

stargrazer··on The skyhook solution
I didn't know this was actually real. I couldn't tell if it was real or fake when I saw it used during the final moments of a Bond movie.
stargrazer··on Broadcom to Cut Almost 1,300 VMware Jobs in California After Takeover
any news on what happens to the saltstack side of the vmware operation?
stargrazer··on Show HN: Matcheroni, a tiny C++20 header library for building lexers/parsers
You may want to compare this against boost/spirit. I use Spirit extensively for my own Domain Specific Language parsing requirements.
stargrazer··on Grumpy Locals Are Sabotaging Cruise and Waymo Robotaxis with Traffic Cones
The article doesn't say, but for those of us who are uninformed, what does the cone do? Is it decoration, or does it 'actively' interfere with the navigation sensors?
stargrazer··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
https://blog.raymond.burkholder.net/

Mostly Linux related. Networks. Sysadmin activities. Some embedded development. Random personal tech interests.

I write to record what I did so I can reference it later. If it helps others, so much the better.

stargrazer··on The world is watching in disbelief as France tears itself apart
I think a large part of it is that they imported a bunch of different disparate cultures over the last few years. All those cultures have their own little societies, and I think very little integration.

So you have a mixture of oil and water.

And when the new ones have no home or responsibilities and are fed by the government, well, ha, who knew they would bite the hand that housed, fed, and clothed them.

stargrazer··on C++ Implementation of StableDiffusion
Seems to be a Microsoft Windows specific implementation.

Was hoping for something cross platform on to Linux.

stargrazer··on Ask HN: What happened to fuzzy logic?
Would you be able to supply a reference to some of the tricks of stepper motor controllers?
stargrazer··on Text only news websites (2022)
Is the engagement lead to extended time engagement, or is just click engagement? I remember, I think it was intuit, their knowledge base was a matrix of pictures with very little text. That obtained no engagement from me as I was unwilling to click into each every picture to see if it was relevant or not. I guess their click rate goes up, but their duration engagement goes down.
stargrazer··on Text only news websites (2022)
I suppose Lynx would be something similar. It is a console based web site browser, and as such, no pictures whatsoever are visible.
stargrazer··on Text only news websites (2022)
I can't copy text from articles. Is that by design?
stargrazer··on Text only news websites (2022)
not necessarily native text, but a flowing list of news links:

irc.libera.chat has

##hntop - updated as hacker news item cream rises to the top
##news - common interest international stuff
  ##alerts - earthquakes, electricity, ...
maybe others
stargrazer··on Reverse-engineering the Globus INK, a Soviet spaceflight navigation computer
One of the museums has one of the early aircraft based mechanical inertial guidance systems on display. Seems it was two or three or four times larger than this. It would be interesting to find a similarly detailed analysis of how those things operated.
stargrazer··on Tesla now factors late night driving into their safety score
How about for the main battery replacement? How often does that occur?
stargrazer··on A brief guide to Kubernetes networking
s/bgp/ebpf/

bgp: border gateway protocol ebpf: extended berkely packet filter

stargrazer··on Vanilla OS 2.0 Shifting from Ubuntu Base to Debian Sid
Quite a few comments pro and con for Debian Sid. My two cents worth: Sid aka Unstable for a reason. Some have said they have had unstable systems.

The resolution to to this is that one should subscribe to IRC or some of the Debian mailing lists. There the developers publish the fact that major changes are hitting Unstable.

If one stays away from Sid during those times, and perform an update once things have settled, a 'more stable' Unstable is realized.

I don't use Unstable, but I do run Testing (currently AKA BookWorm), and I act in a similar manner. There are breaking changes sometimes. I perform no updates at those times. In addition, I have to check packages.debian.org sometimes as specific packages might be broken, and it will indicate what/when change may occur.

stargrazer··on Checking Firewall Equivalence with Z3 (2018)
then what would happen if you had to do the same thing with ipv6?
stargrazer··on CS quotes found while browsing Notepad++'s code
sqlite has the option of a single file build. They found that the compiler can optimize best within one compilation unit.
stargrazer··on Apache NetBeans 15
I used NetBeans for C++ dev as well. But I had to stop several/many versions ago. They hard-coded a bunch of C++ version stuff, and it stopped getting updated. So when C++ was updated, beyond that, I stopped using NetBeans.

I've since progressed to VisualCode and CMake.

stargrazer··on Cost of a Integer Cast in Go
and is it aligned properly
stargrazer··on An io_uring-based user-space block driver
yes, i think there is example code where io_ring is used to get blocks into and out of XDP/kernel.
stargrazer··on How fast is 12th Gen Intel Core?
So.... is the Framework laptop with a 12th Gen core noisy or not? Is it quiet most of the time? Do the fans become noisy during a compile or benchmark? Does it remain relatively cool? What are people's experiences with these laptops? My primary use would be C++ development with frequent large multi-core builds.
stargrazer··on Firefox is losing users fast
hmm, isn't that what happened to Sun - the managers/mbas took over, then the engineers revolted
stargrazer··on 8-bit 64K 1802 computer with front panel and serial port in an Altoids tin
The 1802! My very first micro! The Cosmac ELF! Knowing that as a hobbyist got me my first job designing with the 1805A in various projects.

Can one still buy the 1805?

stargrazer··on Facebook has started to encrypt links to counter privacy-improving URL Stripping
Wouldn't it just be easier to 'not use facebook'?
stargrazer··on Bill Watterson’s refusal to license Calvin and Hobbes (2016)
So... what does Waterson do now with his life?
stargrazer··on New C++ features in GCC 12
Not in the standard, but the language does support it: https://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_79_0/libs/parameter/doc/htm...
stargrazer··on Things that used to be hard and are now easy
It is as thought browser/javascript is the only thing out there now. Or at least appears to be implied in the comments.

Just wanted to state that in other worlds, like C++, there exist tools like wxWidgets which provide cross platform GUI.
