I suspect this isn't the case in many other American cities, because
a. Transit is a luxury good, raising prices and gentrifying an area
b. Transit is the easiest to build to close places (from the CBD), which are often rich
c. Poorer communities just aren't a priority for most cities, at least not until recently.
Anecdotally, in Europe the modal split is probably more even.

If it wouldn't be for political opposition most cities, undoubtedly, would upzone (permit higher density) areas near downtown and other hubs, but even in "progressive" cities progress is slow because of opposition of the people who currently live there (commonly called NIMBY's)

They blame biking for everything from insanity to killing pedestrians at random.
There's a few snippets the twitter thread could include lol
There has to be some middle ground for safety inside and on the outside.
How did you deal with keeping yourself hydrated and filled? Did you drink caffeine to keep yourself awake?
I would love to try something similar when I'm in a new city once
