stardenburden··on Cargo sous terrain – Underground cargo train in Switzerland
Building entirely new infrastructure around an entire country for something that can already be achieved by more traditional means is a huge misallocation of money.

> Taken off so far

Other than the Beijing airport train there is no real other maglev running. Even the Virgin Hyperloop has achieved more than this project. And let's not get into what happened to them recently...

Interesting perspective. I have been to the Alps several times, and do realize how limiting it can be. That's the reason the CBT and Gotthard base Tunnel is so important and plays such a central role. The problems start there, upgrading these two massive pieces of infrastructure to support these new types of trains (also note the vendor lock in through novel systems) would be costly and probably not possible without delays for current freight.

I read the entire comic two days ago, it left me disturbed and angry. It's tragic to what humans are possible, and terrifying to see the results of countless studies in real life - abused for money.

I don't understand how the school could exist for so long, conditions were straight up evil - how did nobody publish that in a mainstream newspaper?

stardenburden··on Travel photos are underrated (2019)
I don't just take pictures while traveling. Anything that I find interesting gets saved.

For example a couple days ago I saw a car with a license plate from the other side of the world. After I looked their handle up online after i was back home I found a super interesting story about a lovely couple traveling the world.

stardenburden··on Hundreds of ancient Maya sites hidden under Mexico reveal a mysterious blueprint
They do! I visited "El Mirador" in the forest of Guatemala. And at one of the smaller cities on our way there, our guide pointed out that one of the small squares in, what was our entrance to, the town was probably used for playing a game similar to basketball but with a hard rock. There were also elevated places around it where people (albeit smaller in size) could have comfortably sit down and watched.

Edit: autocorrect is messing me up

While I'm also a big fan of nix and friends, one big issue with this is that setting up databases, or in general services, with nix-shell is impossible.
stardenburden··on Thoughts on chess improvement, after gaining 600 points in 6 months
Great writeup! I just jumped from 900 to 1200 in rapid within two months.

I'll definitely try what he proposed to hopefully get the same rating gain.

stardenburden··on 'Google' is most searched word on Bing
Thing is, google doesn't want you to really use the term google because it makes creating a trademark ever so harder.

</Fun little side fact>

I'm sure they also have concerns about it being coming over as monopolistic behavior

stardenburden··on Raspberry Pi config for all things Internet
Your system state in nixos is described in a config file. When you reinstall you won't need to remember what packages you installed, what files you touched in /etc and worse of all: how you configured your text editor.

All of that state can be described with nix. So if I wanted to reinstall right now, I'd have the exact same system as before. Naturally you'll have to put in some work to make your system 100% nix, but it's worth it.

That's also why I think it's perfect for projects like this one, people will merely have to copy your config file, change nothing if deploying on the same hardware (except maybe some IP address here and there) and it should all just work:tm:

stardenburden··on Raspberry Pi config for all things Internet
There is a binary cache, at least for the rpi 3b (aarch64) and I know from friends that it also exists for the 4.

stardenburden··on How to rapidly improve at any programming language (2016)
I can tell an anecdote from my own life to confirm this theory.

My first PR at nixpkgs, I had to close because I didn't understand what the maintainers were complaining talking about, it was like they were speaking a different language. It was only one month later, after reading other PR reviews, talking on IRC and thinking about all of it, could I make sense of what they wanted from me. Since then I've started doing exactly what the author described: comment on other PRs with things that I was confronted with, and/or saw others be. By now I've gained enough knowledge to come up with own criticisms - indicating that I've learnt quite a lot.

https://github.com/LegendOfMiracles/dotnix/tree/master/hosts... (bottom lines describe the remote build logic) this is the actual config of the pi 3b... One other file also gets sourced: the defaults-nixos file in the root of the repo. And the distributed build host nix file describes creating a build user on my main machine.

The setup is mostly mirrored from https://sgt.hootr.club/molten-matter/nix-distributed-builds/

Be sure to enable binfmt for whatever architecture your pi uses on your main machine for cross compilation.

For generating the iso I used nixos-generators.

stardenburden··on Raspberry Pi config for all things Internet
I feel like nix[1] is better suited than Ansible for this.

Just I'm this week, I made an iso for my rpi config, which has everything setup from ssh keys to the services i want to use. All I need to do is flash it and it's good to go. Not to mention that I can easier manage a fleet of this with remote deployment[2].

This seems nice, loads fast on my slow connection.

But there don't seem to be filters, like only showing posts older than a certain date. Or with a certain comment threshold.

stardenburden··on Visualizing observed deaths using polar coordinates
In Germany less people died through the pandemic than died in normal years. At least in 2020.

What happened was that people were overly careful - in all parts of life, e.g. meeting people, wearing masks (less of a flu season = less deaths) and going to a doctor when sick - hospital s greatly increased their capacity and afaik Germany never had the dramatic situations where people couldn't get oxygen or staff was at the edge of quitting.
