stanski··on Ask HN: Best Paid Gmail Replacement?
I use Zoho Mail. They're not super popular but everything has been up to my expectations.

I also use their Invoice product for time tracking and invoicing.

stanski··on 'I am mine': Alzheimer's at 41 (2018)
Very strange we have to starve people to death (while sedated) so they can have their ultimate release. We'd never do something like that to a beloved pet. I don't get it.
stanski··on The $2B Mall Rats
Exactly. How many more months of losses could they have taken in 2020 before throwing in the towel?

Yes, they would've eventually been right but being right at the right time is where the trick lies. This just seems like pure luck.

stanski··on The NoJS Club
I didn't realize using Linux is the same as not allowing Javascript... I feel special!
stanski··on L.A.'s coast was once a DDT dumping ground, but no one could see it until now
It's easy to get outraged (as we should) when we hear about a developing country recklessly polluting the environment but it's important to remember that the West has been doing this on a very large scale for a very long time. Climbing onto this (somewhat) high horse hasn't been an overnight process.
stanski··on ØMQ – The Guide (2011)
I'm pretty sure that's supposed to be a joke. Also the main dev is not American but Belgian.
stanski··on OPSEC critique of the Michigan Governor kidnap plot
This is the sort of planning a 12 year old would come up with while daydreaming. Except these guys are adults so they have an actual chance of trying to put it into action. It's part scary and part embarrassing.
stanski··on I built that “so-and-so is typing” feature in chat (2014)
I hope this email finds you well.
stanski··on Privacy Badger Is Changing to Protect You Better
I went through the pain period of noscript but still couldn't stick with it. I had to be constantly mindful every time I buy something online. The process would half-fail at some stage and then I have to start hunting for which domain is the one that's essential for the checkout to complete.

This is not NoScript's fault of course. Some websites are including 20-30 different domains (check out maperformance.com for example) and picking and choosing to get something to work is a nightmare.

stanski··on Lenovo to Sell ThinkPad X1 and Nearly 30 Other PCs with Ubuntu Preloaded
Perhaps always 10 years away.
stanski··on Toonify Yourself
I tried my face with two different backgrounds but nothing. I guess I just have one of those faces! (might be a good thing)
stanski··on Scale model of 'Flying-V' airplane makes successful maiden flight
Thank CNN for that. Clearly clickbait. The Flight Global article someone else linked to has the word "model" in its title and a lot more useful information.
stanski··on Police-issued "courtesy cards" help friends and family out of minor infractions
No party would ever take this on. They might mumble something out of the corner of their mouth to get elected but politicians are way too scared of the police union.

This is not a problem with the US only and goes beyond systemic racism too, even though that's what's in focus right now.

stanski··on Science Fiction Books I’ve Read (2018)
It's like reading a list of books considered classics in the genre. I feel like the author is just checking off boxes. Also, needs some Iain M. Banks.
stanski··on We thought it was just a respiratory virus
That's for the very young, ie children, at least from what I gathered.
stanski··on We thought it was just a respiratory virus
If a lot of the damage is often caused by an overreacting immune system, why isn't this disease harder on younger people who presumably have stronger immune systems? Kind of like the Spanish flu? This doesn't add up for me and this article doesn't dwell on that either.
stanski··on We Reviewed Police Tactics Seen in Nearly 400 Protest Videos
He forgot to list a nuclear device as a potential threat.
stanski··on We Reviewed Police Tactics Seen in Nearly 400 Protest Videos
There will always be a ton of people who will deny these claims simply because they are too afraid to accept the alternative. It's very comforting to think that there is this force of good that is there to protect you from harm when you need it.
stanski··on Bye
I'm slightly annoyed that nohello.com alone doesn't work; you need the www.
stanski··on Last Airworthy MiG-17 Is Up for Sale
That would only be true if he were restoring in order to shoot down other aircraft.
stanski··on Last Airworthy MiG-17 Is Up for Sale
The walkaround video answers that question and points out other cool features of the airframe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2-LprWf3NI

Those are pitot tubes as others have mentioned and there are two of them for the sake of aerodynamic balance.

stanski··on Protests about police brutality are met with wave of police brutality across US
Okay, then what are the police covering for the tiny minuscule percentage of criminals? Cause they are the majority.
stanski··on Linux Mint Dumps Ubuntu Snap
No one has suggested openSUSE so I'll go ahead and do that. Mature, stable and great-looking (with KDE).

Been using it for years, including one installation of their rolling release, Tumbleweed, which is surprisingly stable for a bleeding edge distro.

stanski··on First photo of HS2 tunnel boring machines
The Brits made it dig it's own grave...
stanski··on Thoughts on cameras in the age of excellent cell phone photos
Something tells me he wouldn't be having such a dilemma when he needs to spend $1000 or more in two years for a new flagship cell phone. Nevermind how much less a new camera costs and how much longer it will be useful for.
stanski··on As Protests and Violence Spill Over, Trump Shrinks Back
The cynical part of me is thinking this will blow over in a week or two, until the next time.
stanski··on Google ends plans for smart city in Toronto
Just a big tech company hyping up a project they were never really up to. Hopefully the city didn't spend a fortune on this. The fizzling out will come to no one's surprise.
stanski··on Animals killed since opening this page
Factory farming big in nature?
stanski··on Show HN: Help Me Decide Please
Ah, I thought it was broken.
stanski··on Why have so many coronavirus patients died in Italy?
He has to be covid-19 positive to be recorded as such. However, yes, he could die of internal bleeding, but have covid and he will be recorded as a covid-19 death. The article states that 88% of the dead had other pre-morbidity, sometimes two or three.

I think the fact that the hospitals are overwhelmed is killing people a lot quicker than they would've taken.
