stanski··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
My thoughts exactly! Get the benefits of the electric powertrain (no gearing, instant torque), with the proven range-extension of the ICE generator.
stanski··on [dead]
They are not detached from reality. They just know that repeating a lie works to whitewash what they are systematically doing, and confuse enough people into inaction.
stanski··on 'Lake America' makes one thing clear: We can't trust U.S. tech companies
All well and good until we found out that Google updated the name before GNIS managed to do it. They went out of their way to score points as quickly as possible.
stanski··on 'Lake America' makes one thing clear: We can't trust U.S. tech companies
There was a good editorial cartoon recently in the Canadian Globe and Mail paper related to this: https://ibb.co/fdG9PtST
stanski··on You Rename My Lake – I Move My Hosting
Well, he did get elected so...
stanski··on 'Temu Range Rovers' Are Taking over Britain
Doesn't even matter who owns them. Reliability is consistently terrible and the vehicles are consistently nice to drive.
stanski··on 'Temu Range Rovers' Are Taking over Britain
I heard that term about the Hyundai Santa Fe first. Now it's the Chinese manufacturers giving JLR competition.

Of course if you drive the actual vehicle back to back with a Land Rover, you'll find that looks or interior do not a Rover make. For now anyway.

stanski··on The dark underbelly of "Paw Patrol"
Is this satire?
stanski··on Two wheels, a few tradeoffs, and gas prices
I'm not so sure that motorcycle emissions are much better than a car's, even if they do consume less gas. Cars have very complicated emissions systems and are under stricter regulations.

I've also never been able to get anywhere close to 3l/100km. As soon as you move onto bigger displacement bikes, you're looking at around 6l/100km, which is comparable to a hybrid car that weights 5-6 times what the bike does! It's far from an extremely efficient mode of transportation given the significantly reduced utility.

Regardless, ride as long as you enjoy it, or until you have to recalculate the amount of risk you can afford!

stanski··on The State of Google
Exactly right. OP determines value differently than a mega corporation.
stanski··on When does a CEO get involved? When you're on your fourth Ford Focus
I was surprised cause I thought the Focus was fairly reliable.

Turned out the post was about an Escape. Title is wrong.

stanski··on Don't Provoke Russia
Must be viral if it says so in the title.
stanski··on If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies
Sounds like an Ayreon song.
stanski··on Italy blocks US use of Sicily air base for Middle East war
If they could remember they wouldn't keep making the same mistake multiple times. But I guess no danger of that.
stanski··on How BYD Got EV Chargers to Work Almost as Fast as Gas Pumps
I may be in the market for a new car soon, which I hope to keep for at least a decade, so this kind of thing bothers me. I don't want to buy something that's already years behind on efficiency.
stanski··on Palestinian boy, 12, describes how Israeli forces killed his family in car
I think that's the point - to discourage (certain) people from living there at all. Except it turns out people are capable of never-ending suffering and persevering through it.

You would think Israelis would already know this very well.

stanski··on Ask HN: Have you ever cloned a cat?
Grieving for a pet is totally a thing. Comparing its importance to that of a child might be taking it a little far. Nothing would compare to losing a child.
stanski··on Bye Bye Gmail
Been using Zoho for years with no issues. Both via the web interface and IMAP.
stanski··on Canada Announces Divorce from America
Putin is a traitor to Russia but there he is still, 25 years on with no end in sight. The public is too easy to manipulate.
stanski··on Canada Announces Divorce from America
A couple of tiny steps between the likes of Venezuela and Greenland and China though, eh?
stanski··on Kidney Recipient Dies After Transplant from Organ Donor Who Had Rabies
> We're gonna need that cornea back.

Not exactly a sentence you would hope to hear...

stanski··on EU lawmakers push to ban term 'veggie-burger'
This is ridiculous. A burger is a construct.

Sure, you can't call a veggie patty a beef patty, but how does the meat industry own the word burger?

stanski··on Way past its prime: how did Amazon get so rubbish?
So they sold their account to a fraudster who also moved into their old address? Sure, it's possible but now verging on the ridiculous.

They can use common sense for the refund. They are just choosing not to.

stanski··on I bought the cheapest EV, a used Nissan Leaf
I thought about this too - own a small electric vehicle for 90% of the family needs and rent a bigger SUV when the need arises.

Until you do the math and realize that the 3-4 annual trips of multiple days would end up costing thousands of dollars in rental fees per year. Plus the usual inconveniences around renting.

Suddenly the math does not look so appealing.

stanski··on RFK Jr. Promises to Reveal the 'Cause' of Autism Next Month
My guess is Jerome Powell.
stanski··on Skip the exit interview when you leave your job
My wife was recently re-hired by a place she had previously left. The director who wanted her back was given a hard time by HR precisely because she had pointed out issues during her exit interview. She didn't feel like she was burning any bridges at the time.

You may have the best intentions but it doesn't mean the other side does. Lesson learned.

stanski··on Tesla Robotaxi launch is a dangerous game of smoke and mirrors
Especially on the Tesla he drives.
stanski··on I ditched my Pi-hole but still block ads with NextDNS
My last problem with pihole was that I had forgotten the root user password on the system I installed it on. Exactly because I had set it up and then literally forgotten it...
stanski··on Microsoft unveils Majorana 1 quantum processor
Only if you use them in conjunction with an HTML5 supercomputer. (Sorry, I couldn't resist with Nikola in the news again)
stanski··on I'm Done with Ubuntu
Been using opensuse for both my personal laptop and a server for many years now.

Still don't understand why it's not more popular.
