stanlarroque··on Steam Frame
Yes we released our headset with root access and an open bootloader. We are going to announce our next headset in a couple of months :-)
stanlarroque··on Wolvic, a new browser project picking up where Firefox Reality leaves off
By March we will release our OpenXR SDK. Our website for now is https://lynx-r.com

We are going to integrate this in our Lynx R-1 headset! Great to have something else than just chromium in this space.
stanlarroque··on My first year at Magic Leap and the opportunity ahead
I can't believe VCs put another 500M$ in this (even at the same last valuation).

If only we could have that money for our Lynx[0] headset...

stanlarroque··on EU startup fund overwhelmed by high demand
My startup received this "seal of excellence". It hurts because I'd rather have the money instead of a piece of paper, but hopefully we might be selected for the next round. They do this startup selection every 6 months or so.
stanlarroque··on Oculus Quest 2
Thank you for the kind words. Our team is doing their absolute best. You can click on my username it should lead you to my contact.
stanlarroque··on Oculus Quest 2
We already have SteamVR compatibility with remote rendering over Wifi 6 or USB-C. And for the rest of your questions, yes.

We are building exactly this : https://lynx-r.com
stanlarroque··on Everything we know about Apple's smart glasses
It's 47 pixels per degree.
stanlarroque··on Holographic optics for thin and lightweight virtual reality
This article does a good job: https://www.kguttag.com/2019/12/18/hololens-2-not-a-pretty-p...

Digilens is a company that's been around for 15 years doing all kinds of eye wear stuff.

stanlarroque··on Holographic optics for thin and lightweight virtual reality
Impressive, but I doubt even FRL can overcome this design limitations. Digilens tried to do that since forever, and when you introduce more colors you will face the same kind of problems seen in Hololens 2.
stanlarroque··on AR will be startup dominated, VR will not
Yes, the best SLAM we have today based on visual inertial data (Camera+IMU) uses 500mW of power. It uses DSPs and ASICs. Also, the custom silicon team from MSFT did a great job for their SLAM and display engine, it's built on ASICs in what's called the HPU for Hololens: https://youtu.be/u0eBd2m_wEs?t=1641
stanlarroque··on AR will be startup dominated, VR will not
As the founder of a startup creating an AR headset, I think it’s true but the AR market is not as mature as VR. In every tech product, first comes the hardware and then the software adds the magic at every update. In the AR world, we are still at the hardware stage. No one has the answer today for a compelling device and experience for B2C. There is no Moore law in optics and the compute power needed for SLAM, computer vision and stereo rendering is crazy if you want an untethered device (like hololens). You need more than the traditional CPU/GPU config, you need DSPs, ASICs and perhaps FPGA. Combined with the optics your NRE is high. We are far from a market that has the same ROI as VR now, even on the entreprise the adoption is slow. This game is hard but it will be worth it, and it’s the most exciting venture I’ve been a part of.
stanlarroque··on How to Use Slack and Not Go Crazy
And I'd like to buy you a coffee someday for teaching me about the Ctrl+Shift+ESC shortcut.
stanlarroque··on Streaming Video and Audio with Low Delay
Kurento is an excellent open source solution for this use-case. Check out the project here: https://github.com/Kurento/kurento-media-server
stanlarroque··on Age of Empires 2 Scenario Editor Is Turing Complete
I can only think of one of the greatest videos[0] on Youtube when I read about unusual Turing complete systems.

stanlarroque··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy successfully launches
It was awesome. The synchronized landing of both boosters was emotional.

Might be a naive thought, but for a few minutes, you forget everything else. There were millions of people from every nation live-watching the broadcast and everyone was cheering and hoping for the best.

The world seemed at peace during that moment and this is what I love about space exploration and all these great human achievements.

stanlarroque··on $PHP = ;
I could tell it was sarcastic all along: he mentioned mongodb.
stanlarroque··on Do you need a VPN?
Yes, I provide some details in a blog article: https://stan.sh/posts/building-a-distributed-vpn-service

The underlying technology used is from Algo VPN, a well-acclaimed open source VPN solution. https://github.com/trailofbits/algo

stanlarroque··on Do you need a VPN?
It is the first time I have ever encounter a philosophy close to mine about this subject.

Check out my VPN service, DataBuster[0]. I made the VPN only for myself at the beginning but my friends requested the features and it became a viable product.

The only "tracking" I do on the main page is a passive analysis of Apache logs made with Piwik, so there is no visible JS tracking code or third-party tracker.

stanlarroque··on Boom has orders for 76 of its future supersonic passenger jets
My grandfather was one of the first pilots in Air France. He refused to fly the Concorde because he would never fly a plane that would make the company loose money.
stanlarroque··on Alarming number of DNS requests made by iOS devices
I understand iCloud, iTunes, and all other apple services need to communicate with their servers. My point is to question why do they need more than 1000 hosts for their endpoints? It only look suspicious in my eyes.

stanlarroque··on Alarming number of DNS requests made by iOS devices
UPDATE: I updated my article with a more recent graph with more devices connected.

Here is a quick CSV export of all the concerned hosts (subdomain + domain) I could pick from my database.

I really want the story behind pancake.g.aaplimg.com

stanlarroque··on Alarming number of DNS requests made by iOS devices
Does your device behave correctly when you block these domains? If so, what is the impact on your service and battery life?

I really feel a dissonance between Apple's marketing position with privacy and the behavior of their devices in the background.

stanlarroque··on Alarming number of DNS requests made by iOS devices
I do not block these requests. However I am pretty sure Apple does some DNS tunneling.

Also, some iOS specific requests happen when there is no other DNS activity at all.

stanlarroque··on Alarming number of DNS requests made by iOS devices
I disabled all that, and background app refresh as well.

I am getting a huge database of these logs because of my users. Maybe someone can help me investigate because there is definitely something going on.

stanlarroque··on No-Ads: Millions of banner ads blocked since 1996
Dnsmasq with a black list is very powerful for that matter. AlgoVPN [1] is using it, and provides a network-wide ad blocking and anti-tracking.

Also, I made an app which is a distributed version of AlgoVPN, for iOS devices. People testing it find it very convenient.

stanlarroque··on Latency matters
It's not a feeling, we do the measures. It's like measuring your reaction time, few experiments are on screen and some are analogs. At the end you have a measure in a unit of time, and you deduce the fps from that
stanlarroque··on Latency matters
I'm working on an AR headset and we made some experiments with the human eye. I barely can notice the difference for motion above 120 fps. But my associate is a retired fighter pilot and he can react to motion at ~280 fps.
