I think you would enjoy this episode of Black Mirror: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_National_Anthem_(Black_Mir...
standeven··on Ask HN: Do You Use Siri?
It’s hard for Siri to improve when the Apple engineers keep sleeping in.
standeven··on Ask HN: Do You Use Siri?
Yes, for setting timers and playing music on my HomePod. That’s about it.

Haven’t tried the “new” Siri yet as it’s not compatible with HomePods or iOS devices 15 and earlier.

standeven··on Seattle Bans Rental Junk Fees
Small landlords also rent out basement suites and carriage homes on their own property, no? Those may very well sit empty if the return isn’t worth the risk.

Editing to just add: I absolutely support transparent pricing for rental properties.

Used Tesla Model Y with AT tires? You can get a small lift kit for them if you want more ground clearance.
standeven··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
Same. Siri has been so bad for so long, and this announcement gave me a brief glimmer of hope that it would finally get better. However, every phone in my family is a 15 or older, and there is no support for our newer HomePod either. Boooooo Apple, booooo.
standeven··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
There are usually training versions of the race shoe, which are heavier due in part to thicker rubber soles and more durable foam. So you train in those, and then switch to the ultra-light, ultra-bouncy race version on race day.

Glad you’re happy with the Saucony Pro. I think the equivalent to the Vaporfly would be the Saucony Endorphin Elite though, which probably lasts no more than a couple of big races either.

If you ever want to try team Nike again, the Zoom Fly is the carbon-plated trainer I use, and it lasts a lot longer than the race shoes. I’m definitely not getting thousands of km though!

standeven··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
That is exactly what they’re supposed to do. They are marketed as racing shoes for a couple of marathons, tops. Everything on those shoes is designed to be as thin and as light as possible.
standeven··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
Right, but global CO2 is still a massive problem.

A data center drawing 5 GW is the equivalent power of 278,000 cars driving at highway speed. Even if these gas generators are cleaner (we don’t know because they are not regulated or measured), that is an insane amount of exhaust to locate near residential areas.

standeven··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
CO2, the stuff that has been buried for millions of years, and we're releasing all at once into the atmosphere? The stuff that is warming our planet faster than we, or nature, can adapt to? The stuff that is worsening global wildfires, flooding, retreating glaciers, heat waves, desertification, etc.?

Yeah, that stuff. And other nasty things in the exhaust as well.

standeven··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
The pollution is the immense amount of exhaust from the power generation equipment being installed on site at data centres.

I think a lot of people are desperate for tech giants to stand up to the current US administration.
standeven··on Aptera announces a $44M to design and build a solar electric vehicle
This is like building a gas powered car with a refinery attached to the roof.

Batteries exist. Solar panels add weight and design constraints. Why is this a thing? What am I missing?

More likely it’s because the title rule was broken. The original title was not used, and the new title is unclear.
standeven··on The brain was not designed for this much bad news
The closing of Hormuz caused fuel prices to go up around the globe. Voting differently in the US could have prevented it.

So yeah, random shit far away can have significant effects, and sometimes you can do things about it.

That said, focusing on local news does sounds like a great approach, but international news still needs some attention.

standeven··on Alberta startup sells no-tech tractors for half price
Then again, she probably loves the idea of tractors with poor fuel efficiency and no exhaust cleaning tech.
standeven··on IEA: Solar overtakes all energy sources in a major global first
Comparing primary energy is VERY misleading. From Marc Jacobson:

The use of primary energy on the vertical axis is an old trick by the fossil fuel industry to mislead people into thinking that one unit of fossils = one unit of renewables. In fact, one unit of primary energy for wind or solar electricity is the equivalent of three units of fossil fuel electricity.

Another trick is to pretend we need all those fossils if we switched to renewables. In fact, if we switch to renewables, 12% of the fossil fuel energy disappears because that is how much energy is used to mine-transport-refine fossil fuels+uranium for energy, and we wouldn't need to do that anymore

A third trick is to pretend we need so much energy if we go to all electricity powered by renewables. In that case, because EVs use 75% less energy than gasoline/diesel vehicles, heat pumps use 75% less energy than combustion heating, etc., energy demand goes down another 42%.

In sum, this plot illustrates the real story of where we are and where we need to go. The proper metric is end-use energy, not primary energy.

standeven··on Iran war energy shock sparks global push to reduce fossil fuel dependence

standeven··on What if the Hormuz closure will not be brief?
China’s move toward solar and wind seems more prescient than ever.
standeven··on Global warming has accelerated significantly
The main driver of this is human-produced CO2, and there are meaningful ways to reduce usage.

-Switch to an electric vehicle -Migrate from gas appliances (range, furnace, water heater) to electric (induction, heat pumps) -If your power grid isn’t clean, add rooftop or balcony solar -Encourage friends and family to do the same
