standeven··on Drug trio found to block tumour resistance in pancreatic cancer in mouse models
Every time I see homeopathic medicine on the shelves in a pharmacy, I think we’re not taking it far enough.
standeven··on In Europe, wind and solar overtake fossil fuels
I have roof top solar. I have never had to clean or maintain them in any way. Same with my friends who have roof top solar. The worst I’ve heard of is a microinverter failing, which was covered by warranty.

My gut response to your post was also aggression, not because you’re preaching uncomfortable truths, but because you’re repeating fossil fuel lobbyist talking points that I’m getting really tired of seeing all over social media.

Some provincial grants remain ($5k in BC last time I checked), but yes - Canada can and should do more. Balcony solar seems like such an easy win. Hopefully tariffs get dropped now that we’re talking to China again. And federal Liberals could force municipalities and provinces to reduce some of the red tape surrounding solar installations. Come on Canada, unlocking clean energy shouldn’t have to be a fight!
standeven··on California is free of drought for the first time in 25 years
Solar panels can also help, as BC gets long sunny days when the reservoirs are low.
standeven··on US Job Openings Decline to Lowest Level in More Than a Year
Shouldn’t job openings always trend upwards with increasing population?
standeven··on Efficient method to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
This. The fossil fuel industry continues to overflow the tub with CO2, but instead of turning off the tap, we keep trying to invent a better sponge.

We need carbon taxes, tariffs on high-emitting countries and products, and support for adopting clean energy, clean transportation, and clean everything else. Lobbying and misinformation has made these actual solutions politically impossible to implement though, so we continue to waste resources on sponges.

But cars are useful.
standeven··on CO2 batteries that store grid energy take off globally
It's also very recyclable, so big batteries that reach end of life can contribute back to the lithium supply.
standeven··on Ford kills the All-Electric F-150
Yes, tons of these in BC. My friend and several neighbours love theirs.

You just described the new Ramcharger.
standeven··on Americans are losing millions to scammers at crypto ATMs
What would be a legit reason to use these ATMs? A 24% exchange rate loss plus a service fee seems like it would discourage most honest users.

Was the IPO for a hydrogen company by any chance?
standeven··on Warming climate–not overgrazing–is biggest threat to rangelands, study suggests
There’s no chance nature can adapt at the current rate of change. Eventually the rate will settle down and nature will catch up, but I expect a lot of pain and suffering in the meantime.

standeven··on EU court rules nuclear energy is clean energy
If we’re looking at the car and energy industries, I think China has already won.
standeven··on US High school students' scores fall in reading and math
In my community, those parents occasionally get elected to the school board.
standeven··on There Goes the American Muscle Car
Husband of a hockey mom here. Yes, they do get the performance model. And even the long range dual motor models are silly quick.
standeven··on Standard Thermal: Energy Storage 500x Cheaper Than Batteries
I did the same calculation. Gravity energy storage is a joke. Came to similar conclusions when running numbers on hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Pumped hydro storage and flywheels are cool but ultimately battery storage, distributed everywhere, will win.

standeven··on Underwater turbine spinning for 6 years off Scotland's coast is a breakthrough
The real problem: if this technology is viable, it will immediately be attacked with disinformation campaigns (“but it kills dolphins!”), lobbying against it, government red tape, and tariffs.

Solar, wind, and storage can solve most of our energy needs, TODAY, but look at how it’s being treated.

standeven··on A Typology of Canadianisms
I think it’s primarily BC and Ontario. And maybe a French version in Quebec.

If you’re using the falling object rule then cap it at an appropriate terminal velocity, maybe 200 km/h.
standeven··on The $25k car is going extinct?
It probably varies between EV manufacturers, but my Tesla Model 3 has been the easiest vehicle to self maintain that I’ve owned yet. Mostly due to how little maintenance there is, but also because of the completely open and online factory service manuals and parts manuals.

It’s ridiculously easy to look up a part number, order it online from wherever is most convenient, and follow the steps in the manual to replace it.

standeven··on The $25k car is going extinct?
Commit to doing all the maintenance on your car yourself to start getting comfortable with it. Easy jobs to start:

-replace cabin air filter -check for even tread wear -top up the wiper fluid -replace the windshield wipers -take off a wheel and look for tears in rubber bushings or grease leaking from seals. -replace anything broken like switches, trim pieces, etc.

Assuming it’s a gas car: -replace engine air filter -inspect spark plugs -check fluid levels: brake fluid, engine oil, coolant -check 12V battery voltage with the engine off and also running -change the oil

standeven··on Andrej Karpathy: Software in the era of AI [video]
Why bother using higher-level programming languages to communicate with a computer? You interact with a computer using assembly - raw bit shifting and memory addresses - which is more precise and effective.

Is this a reasonable metric though? No one was buying books in 1945 with gold.

standeven··on How to lock down your phone if you're traveling to the U.S.
It’s sad that the USA is becoming one of these countries. But yes, that’s what I’m doing - travelling to free countries and avoiding the backwards ones.
standeven··on How to lock down your phone if you're traveling to the U.S.
“Just don’t share opinions” is not an option for a free society. Being gagged for fear of retribution from a foreign government is not beneficial to my mental health.
