stackskipton··on US proposes $100k charge for international students to do post-graduate work
2 World Wars broke out that had impacts on us, it left a ton of our peers completely devastated and we were not. UK did not end food rationing until 1954. By that time, US was building suburbs out, sending a ton of GI to higher education and Marshall plan had our completely functioning factories turning out goods by metric tons an hour.
stackskipton··on I'm in a Meeting
At some point, paying for something and knowing it will work is worth it. In particular, ad blocking YouTube on mobile is frustrating.
stackskipton··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
"break a lot of PhD programs" meaning PhD look less attractive day by day for citizens while relying on foreign money to stay afloat because funding is no longer available.

Maybe you disagree and I never considered getting a PhD but from what I understand, the workload has gone from hard to insane. If you are saying PhD only work with 18 hour days, 7 days a week, alright I guess.

>There is actually bipartisan support for trying to make it easier for PhDs to stay - both parties have repeatedly introduced legislation to help with that - but it seems to keep getting derailed by arguments about other aspects of immigration reform.

BTW, I've seen the legislation, it gets derailed a ton because many voters, myself included, believe it would just backdoor into Universities happily taking money for people to get PhD in low demand subjects to get the green card.

stackskipton··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
I mean, we also break a lot of PhD programs because due to glut of foreign workers, the work environment is hell. I've known several citizens who dropped out because it was 996 type environment and since they didn't need to visa to remain in the US, they could just move on.

Clipping a green card to every PhD is probably political non starter. As American, I'd be very leery of such a scheme.

stackskipton··on New gTLD Application for .lan
As former AD person and dealing with that several companies, the recommendation for internal network DNS has long been subdomain.company.com that is not on public internet.

Even today when setting up greenfield networks, I generally use internal.company.com. It also lets you get public trusted SSL certificates so you don't have to deal with internal PKI.

stackskipton··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
I could believe it. Verified system development most likely comes with metric ton of paperwork.

Want to merge the PR? I need verified sign off in ServiceNow by staff level engineer. They are on vacation for 2 weeks? Did manager fill out delegation paperwork in ServiceNow with VP sign off? Oh they did but they forgot to put in return date AND time. Form needs to be corrected and reapproved before we can go into ServiceNow and make changes.

stackskipton··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
That's your opinion, mine is different.

Yes, loot boxes and other types of casino games throughout the economy are a problem. Online Sports Betting has taken a small problem and caused it to be a big one so it's much more visible in public eye.

If we regulate sports betting, we should probably regulate loot boxes in FIFA 27 as well.

stackskipton··on AI needs $6T in annual revenue to justify data centre boom
Sure, and how much did this cost you in tokens or subscriptions?

Reason I ask is sure, you did this but since few people are paying true cost, if prices rises by 10x, is it still worth it?

stackskipton··on U.S. postal inspectors shut down website selling counterfeit postage labels
Possibly. Sometimes delivery companies find it easier to just deliver them attempting to return to sender and dealing with headache of customer complaints since while it should have been clear to people buying the labels that they were not legit, a lot of people would be like "HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW? I WANT MY MONEY BACK!"

Yes there is verification. Sometimes the label WAS valid but it was purchased with stolen credit card OR purchased then refunded after delivery to the client but before it entered the postal stream.

EDIT: Remember, boxes can be dropped off before someone processes them. Just hand them random postal carrier OR put them in postal pickup box.

stackskipton··on PS5 Relapse Exploit
As someone with a Steam Machine, somewhat low potential. It has a console like experience but not everything in the store supports it. It's open then other things but there are plenty of multiplayer games that refuse to support it due to Anti Cheat.

It feels like R&D project that Steam is doing so in case Microsoft gets really aggressive and locks down Windows 11 to point that Steam no longer works, they have fallback option.

stackskipton··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
What is your point? Bad thing happened in the past, we should continue to let bad thing happen?

Most people find current system of gambling from phone to be too much. Forcing people to physical location and limiting advertising can be good harm reduction without causing increase in crime.

stackskipton··on Fakecloud: Local AWS cloud emulator for integration tests
It depends on your tests and environments. MySQL container should be used for integration and CI/CD testing if you are cost sensitive. Dev or Staging should be end to end testing against AWS RDS.

Whole point is this stuff is for those who think running Dev RDS is too expensive.

stackskipton··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
Most companies are not going to take the risk that supply chain bleeds into defense side if there are alternatives available.
stackskipton··on Fakecloud: Local AWS cloud emulator for integration tests
I assume for RDS for integration testing, you could just use publicly available software. So stand up MySQL container if your RDS is MySQL. This is integration testing, not load testing so shared RDS in lowers would be fine as well. Noisy neighbors shouldn't be a big deal.

Again, while local cloud emulator is great for cost sensitive customers, at some point, you should test Dev against almost exact environment you will be running Prod on. If not, you are asking for eventual outage in Prod when some slightly different AWS thing bites you.

stackskipton··on Fakecloud: Local AWS cloud emulator for integration tests
It depends on the company. Azure provides local emulators for some of their products like CosmosDB and Azure Storage.

Depending on what your size and other things, sometimes it's just easier to have dev instances you test against. Like S3 emulator, you could download one of many and test it but unless your test suite is extensive, the costs against S3 test bucket would probably cost you .03 cents for assurances that everything will work against AWS. If that's breaking the bank at the company, you probably have bigger problems.

stackskipton··on Fifteen years later, the Apple Cards origin story
Yep, there are several. Just search for "physical mail API".

Postgrid is one I've used for personal projects.

stackskipton··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
I can't find study now from CIS but when I dug into it, it lumped citizen children of undocumented immigrants into "undocumented immigrant", and other studies classify them as native/citizen. It also looked at estimated education costs since schools are required to take all school age kids without regard to immigration status and many of big school systems don't have a breakdown of immigration status. CIS argument was: If parents are immigrants, shouldn't be contribute the kids cost to them regardless of kids status?

Looking at CBO numbers, CBO reports that recent immigration into United States is drain, in particular, at state and local level since that's generally budget that gets impacted the most by people. https://www.cbo.gov/publication/61464

stackskipton··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
That's an opinion but poorly held one. Big money is in selling to Enterprise, looking at F10, there are very few companies on there that probably don't have DoD contracts OR supply those who do.

Looking at it by top 10 US companies by revenue, Walmart, Berkshire are probably only two that MIGHT not have DoD contracts. Amazon/Apple/Alphabet do for sure. CVS/UnitedHealth probably supply DoD healthcare, Chevron/ExxonMobil very likely supply fuel and Verizon supplies telecom links.

So if you are Anthropic, those 8 companies cannot use your software AT ALL. That's massive potential revenue to lose.

stackskipton··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
Because if you classified as supply chain risk, ANYONE who does business with DoD/DoW cannot use your product in any capacity.
stackskipton··on Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges
I mean, there are plenty of voice assistants these days. We use our Alexa for this but both Siri and Gemini could easily do it. Whenever we run low on something, "Alexa, add milk to our shopping list" and then can look at application at grocery store.
stackskipton··on AI coding has made CI a bottleneck, so we reworked ours to keep up
It's not Azure as much as self-hosted runners are basement bin servers on clearly massively oversubscribed machines.
stackskipton··on I built the fastest PHP webserver in the world
First off, alot of companies don't have caching layer. It's not different languages, it's the fact that you have really capable webserver underneath. It's HAProxy -> Apache -> PHP vs HAProxy -> Golang (Net/HTTP) or HAProxy -> Python (Uvicorn) with a lot less knobs to manipulate.

I'm Ops person who has supported larger PHP applications. I've had several outages because PHP developer dropped some Apache config to "fix" something that caused HAProxy to disconnect. I've almost never had this with Uvicorn or Net/HTTP.

stackskipton··on I built the fastest PHP webserver in the world
It's generally easier to have language self-host itself because at scale, you will be running multiple instances of the application so instead of Ingress Controller -> Go self-hosted/Python Uvicorn, it becomes Ingress COntroller -> Apache -> PHP and if developer modifies the Apache in ways you are not expecting, stuff can break.

Because it's harm reduction. Sometimes you can reduce a vice impact by putting in friction. Too much can end with poor results for sure.
stackskipton··on Texas judge rules TikTok misled users on child safety feature
>People in Russia and China have almost 30 percentage points more tertiary education levels than Americans do. Nonetheless social media is even more pervasive and popular in China than anywhere else in the world. Like with the panic about video game fixation, harmful time wasters are almost certainly an effect, not a cause, of something else.

I don't know about Russia but China social media is no where close to American Social Media. There is generally time limits, content restrictions and other things that make the two not similar.

When people go "Social media is a problem", they are generally referring to western social media where it's profitability over any external harm they are doing.

stackskipton··on Anthropic tells investors it will be profitable for second straight quarter
My guess is a ton. According to https://www.thebignewsletter.com/p/monopoly-round-up-just-st..., they are asking for exception to anti trust as this type of collaboration would normally be massive anti trust violation.
stackskipton··on Hackers had a live feed of every ID verification company scanned for over a year
As Ops person, massive doubt. I've been at companies that have gotten hacked twice now, neither my department though. Both times, security vulnerabilities that hackers got into were well known, the tickets were in the backlog and deprioritized over feature requests.

I've also seen cases where it's like, maybe we shouldn't share S3 Root Creds or put it on the VPC so we can monitor outgoing traffic but too many applications would need to be redeployed for that so skip it. Those 2 year old tickets were still sitting in the backlog when I left.

If we ever get report, it's extremely likely going to be massive failure and only way to change this is fines for company that are bankrupting.

EDIT: Oh yea, SOC2 needs to go away. It's security theater that's just giving cover to companies.

stackskipton··on Don't use musl if you care about performance
Ops here, I think if you NEED that convenience, sure, rock with MUSL BUT I also see a ton of devs crowing about using MUSL on my 128GB x86 Kubernetes hosts. I have plenty of Disk Space, you can ship glibc based container.
