ssernikk··on Ask A Monk – A digital wilderness for thoughts with no immediate answer
I get "User not found. Please ask a question first." when trying to answer. Why would I have to ask another question first?
ssernikk··on Live map of public transport in Belgium
I don't want to be negative here, just asking out of curiosity. Does anyone actually use apps/services like this? Why would it be useful?

Normally when I want to get somewhere I just use local public transport navigation app which calculates the route and shows me estimated time of when my tram or bus arrives (taking into account its GPS data). Why would I need to know live position of every vehicle in the city?

Nevertheless, cool project!

ssernikk··on Show HN: Weedout – Safari extension that hides YouTube AI-labeled videos
> This is great and hope it'll be compatible with more and more browsers.

I agree! Just ported it to Firefox, see my other comment here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49533429

Definitely gonna use it myself.

I love this concept, but use Firefox, so I ported it:

https://github.com/kacperwyczawski/herbisight (herbisight -> herbicide -> weeds, you know)

I've just submitted it to AMO for review (in the meantime, you can load extension/ via about:debugging). Will update the repo with the store link once approved!

ssernikk··on Play Store blocks AuroraStore, hurting GrapheneOS users
I maintain my grandmothers phone, which comes down mostly to just updating WhatsApp once in a while. Obviously she doesn't have a google account, so I've installed her AuroraStore.

It's a shame that there is no official way to install apps on android without a google accout[1], since it's a basic functionality, just like calls or a web browser.

[1] For obvious reasons I don't want her to download apks from the internet.

GPUI is for rust, not zig

Lasers in space are fun! We[1] are actually doing this for real but automated and inversed -- launching a satellite with a laser to beam data down to Earth. Like these searchlights, but from orbit!

There is also https://pairdrop.net - same thing, but you don't have to download anything, it works on the web.
ssernikk··on AI overviews cause massive drop in search clicks
I know it won't fix the core issue, but you can try (at least on android) Firefox with uBlock Origin (with filter lists for cookies and annoyances enabled). It makes the web usable on mobile for me.
ssernikk··on A 14kb page can load much faster than a 15kb page (2022)
I use it for fonts. My website [0] consists of about 15kB of compressed HTML + CSS and 200kB of fonts.

ssernikk··on Harper – an open-source alternative to Grammarly
From their FAQ:

> We currently only support English and its dialects British, American, Canadian, and Australian. Other languages are on the horizon, but we want our English support to be truly amazing before we diversify.

Good job. May I ask how did you promote your software to get first users? And how long it took you?
ssernikk··on Advent of Code 2024
I've done last two AoCs in F# (well, only the first few days too). For a person without prior functional programming experience, it was fun! Unfortunately I won't have time to participate this year, but if I did, I'd probably chose F# again.

ssernikk··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
I'm working on a pretty simple, chess-based strategy game. It's fun to work on it while I have time during summer vacation.

I like your attitude, but this statement:

...is rather contrary to gmail's whole business model.
