sschueller··on Most data centers refusing to say how much water, electricity they use
These are resources acquired from the governments in most places. You have to be able to plan and expand capacity which requires public funds.

I live right next to a waste valorisation plant[1]. They have to exactly specify what amount of water they use and what amount of water they then send out to the waste water treatment facility. It also has to be clean to a very specific standard before it leaves which is also checked.

We have datacenters in Switzerland too, but very little outrage or debate because there are strict rules in place in most places. They can build all they want but it costs significantly more to meet environmental requirements.

The valorisation plant next to my home has water cooling tower/fans significantly oversized just to make sure the noise is keep under the required level.

sschueller··on Startup Nights 2026 is comming up on 5-6 Nov. in Switzerland
That is because the specific model of classifying a worker as a "self-employed contractor" when they work exclusively for a single company is not legal. Aka the gig-economy model used in other countries.

The governments view is that if you have fewer than 3 companies you are dependent on them and they should bare the AHV etc requirements. However if for example you have 2 very large contracts there may be exceptions.

Easiest (not cheapest) is always to create a GmbH or AG which also mitigates a lot of risk you would have as a sole-proprietor.

Absolutely grotesk and she is convinced she is innocent. Expect her to get right back into the next grift as soon as she can/is allowed.

> OpenAI and Anthropic widen the gap

Extremely unlikely seeing what the Chinese have been able to do with the limited resources they have. The creativity in finding improvement such as what deepseek has released is incredible. At this point it's a bet on the looser if you think the open models won't catch up and surpass the closed ones.

sschueller··on GPT-6 Astra has gained the ability to drive a car
How do you justify all these data centers when models are becoming good enough to run locally and other models are being directly "burned" into chips (model on chip)? Open weight models are almost as good as the closed ones now and they are free/uncensored.

The only thing DCs will still be need for is training, everything else will be done locally on your own hardware.

This bubble will burst and it will be ugly.

Lying and they still are.
sschueller··on Starlink ground station in Poland hit by fire in suspected arson attack
After the 9/11 attacks, NATO did invoke Article 5 for the first and only time in its history.

When Israel starts bombing Turkey with US made weapons, NATO may invoke Article 5 again but I doubt the US will do anything.

sschueller··on Starlink ground station in Poland hit by fire in suspected arson attack
I believe many of these sites do not belong to Space X but are rented by companies offering such services. So they uplink for other companies as well and deal with regulatory stuff etc.
sschueller··on Show HN: How long do I need to work at my salary before I can coast, or retire?
Because the thing you may want to do doesn't pay the bills. Anything from playing music, making art or even building cool electronic things doesn't pay bills most of the time.

I have built many exciting things, many open source, none have brought in enough to cover my day to day.

sschueller··on Show HN: How long do I need to work at my salary before I can coast, or retire?
> Based on the available data, the percentage of the U.S. population that can realistically achieve FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) is very small, likely less than 1% to 3%. This figure represents those who can both meet the strict financial criteria and successfully execute the plan to retire decades before the traditional age.

According to Gallup polling, only 1% of Americans in their early 40s are retired, and just 6% of those in their early 50s have left the workforce. [1]

Nice if you can do it. Most of us will never be able to.

Another benefit of open weight models although providers could still run another model in the background.
sschueller··on What Sun got wrong
For us dell has become that. Rep changes all the time, what appears to be random pricing and long unclear delivery dates. Instead I can for example go to Thomas Kren and configure my serves online for a fraction of the cost. They have what they list in stock, delivered a few weeks later. Everything is clear and hasle free.

At this point I have the feeling dell just charges you what they think they can get out of you. You push back and the price drops, I don't want to negotiate.

sschueller··on OpenArm: An open-source 7DOF humanoid arm
I don't understand why everyone wants to build a laundry folding robot that is humanoid when we generally build purpose built machines which can do a much better and quicker job.

I want to toss dirty laundry into a hopper and have it come out clean and folded at the other end.

There is no reason to use my existing washer and dryer that are designed for human use.

sschueller··on OpenAI bots knew about the RubyGems caching vulnerability
The press wants to make it sound like these things are sentient and are committing crimes on their own now.

Highly disingenuous and borderline criminal to spew such disinformation to the public that does not understand what an LLM really is.

Especially incredibly unethical behavior by those spewing this that understand the tech and are doing it for profit motives to get open weight models under control.

sschueller··on 'You Can See Everything' Review: Nathan Fielder's Doc About Elizabeth Holmes
Elon's DOGE is responsible for over 100k deaths. Some died a horrible death with medical devices stuck in them because there was no one to remove them after all funding was instantly cut. One of the most inhumane and disgusting acts in history.
sschueller··on 'You Can See Everything' Review: Nathan Fielder's Doc About Elizabeth Holmes
Yet people who met her were stupid enough to think she is some kind of genius and gave her millions of dollars.

Sometimes I think if Charles Manson started a startup instead of killing people he would have had millions in investments and be praised as some sort of wunder kind...
