sschueller··on 'People are going to get screwed' Pennsylvania voters unite against data centres
Exactly

Here in Switzerland new AI datacenters are also causing some uproar but a lot less because regulations are rigid enough in most places that you can only build them if you do so cleanly. You can't just take all the water, electricity, make noise and polute.

I live next to a waste valorisation plant and they have very over sized water cooling systems because they need to keep the noise below regulation. They also for example have under pressure in the trash receiving bunker to prevent smells from escaping. All regulations that cost money but are the benefit of all.

Define AGI first. The singularly ain't going to happen with LLMs.
sschueller··on Nvidia to acquire Hugging Face
> Nvidia is investing in the open source ecosystem

Wasn't always the case and will probably only be as long as there is a self interest.

> Linus Torvalds himself noted that the AI boom changed NVIDIA, turning them into a much better contributor to the Linux kernel Linus Torvalds: AI CHANGED NVIDIA.

This should be added to the Swiss building code. Every dinning room should have an outlet under the table.
sschueller··on Manifesto – who we are and what do we want (2002)
> Today we were made aware that the US Government has targeted a small, volunteer-run, technology collective from Italy with disproportionate sanctions as anyone can read in the Treasury Department Statement, the State Department Statement and the related Executive Order.

> We deny all allegations included in the statements, while we strongly affirm our dedication to providing a platform of tools for digital self-defense, addressing the need of free communication for activists and other individuals, groups and associations.

> We will not back down, we will keep doing what we have been doing all these years and we will do whatever is in our possibility to counter the false allegations made by a politically desperate administration with the sole intention of swaying people and media attention away from their own violence and warmongering.

> Antifascism and anticapitalism are not terrorism. Protesting is not terrorism. And everyone has the right to speak out and to struggle for humanity.

He had that option,l. However buying apple hardware todqy you are stuck and need to replace all of it even if for example the CPU is plenty fast but you need more memory or GPU power.

sschueller··on US announces new sanctions on top ICC figures
Well the rest of the world will dismantle the US hegemony "brick by brick". Not because they want to but because they have to. It may take decades but trust has been lost. The US can't be trusted at any level and investments will adjust to this level like any other unstable state.

Research, investments and talents are all avoiding the US. AI won't save the US economy either as there is no moat as we can all see.

sschueller··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
I hope they can make it work

We have a ban on telemarketing calls regarding insurance in Switzerland. But we still get them.

So what happens is that insurance agents (which are required to be licensed) don't call them selves. Instead they use 3rd party call centers outside the country which make the calls. They "warmup" the clients to get a meeting in which the agent then in a visit can make the sale.

For law enforcement to punish these people and revoke their licenses they would need to do costly sting operation which they can only do so much.

sschueller··on Why a Raspberry Pi shouldn't be powered through its GPIO pins
I have many 3d printers powered pi's via the GPIO strip and I haven even made a HAT that does this. It isn't an issue if you do it right. As far as I remember the PI PoE Hat does it as well.

sschueller··on Bitcoin cold-wallet attack spreads to 4,500 addresses as losses near $89M
Yep, also greedy. If he only emptied a few large wallets and sent them to different addresses each also not all at the same time the vulnerability may not have been discovered so quickly.

Most would have blamed the card holder as was seen in the initial few posts that showed up on reddit.

sschueller··on DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731 Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis
I wonder which one of these releases between DeepSeek, GTM and Kimi will be the death-blow that collapses the US AI bubble. At some point investors have to realize that there is nothing preventing someone from switching to another model that is much cheaper and open to boot.

sschueller··on Google will expand age checks on Android worldwide till the end of the year
Why do we need to verify age?

You can't tell me that these social media companies don't already know exactly how old someone is just based on the enormous data that is collected.

sschueller··on Google will expand age checks on Android worldwide till the end of the year
If you have more than 100 million in the bank you should be barred from using the internet...
sschueller··on Google will expand age checks on Android worldwide till the end of the year
There should be a law that forces social media companies to use a different algorithm for anyone under a certain age and be required to disclose it to the public. Possibly different algorithm depending on age group.

There should however be no force age verification. Social media companies already know how old you are or very close to it using the data they collect everyday. Using this data they should be required to use "best effort" to determine which algorithm you fall in. Nothing is 100% and we should stop pretending it is, sure some kids will find a way around but they would also if there is a age verification system.

sschueller··on Open-weight AI is having its Kubernetes moment. Let's not ruin it

sschueller··on Open-weight AI is having its Kubernetes moment
Model-on-Chip is coming. GPU are for general computing but have a huge bottle neck for doing model inference.

Even not being able to significantly update a model that is burned on a chip the performance gains are immense. You also don't need the latest chip fabs to make them drastically reducing the cost.
