sscalia··on Apple Announces 7 For 1 Stock Split
This is the last chance to get in before they release two more disruptive products.

Wearable + Television product.

Get in now. It's quite literally the surest bet in the market.

sscalia··on Project Naptha: a browser extension that enables text selection on any image
Badass. Now support Good Browsers™ like Safari and Firefox.
sscalia··on Lytro Announces New Light Field Camera
God damn, I love companies that make a physical hardware product that is such a gamble like this one.

I will be pre-ordering, if only to encourage startups to think bigger than software.

Stunning!

sscalia··on Uber adds $1 “Safe Rides Fee” to UberX rides for background checks, insurance
Why would they surface this to the end user? Or even pass on the costs? Asinine.
sscalia··on Employee Equity
Because it's actually not a great place to live?
sscalia··on Employee Equity
Great article. It should read "How not to get fucked at a startup"

This coming from someone who got bent over a barrel.

sscalia··on This May Hurt a Bit: Harvard medical student's blog
Are you fucking kidding me? Her writing is outstanding. Sorry it has some emotion, some reflection, some substance.

Would you prefer a log file of events?

Get real.

sscalia··on What’s Driving Google’s Wild Moonshots? Desperation
From the article's comments:

"Imagine a Tesla that was powered by a Google self-driving system."

That will NEVER happen. Ever.

Other car companies -- Mercedes, Audi -- are already ahead of Google on what matters; external packaging, car integration, and vehicle dynamics.

Just because Google can strap a 3-foot-tall spinning LIDAR to the top of an Lexus RX doesn't mean they have any sort of product ready to be put into any production car.

It's a science fair experiment.

sscalia··on What’s Driving Google’s Wild Moonshots? Desperation
The most terrifying reality Google faces is that it cannot effectively productize any of these "moonshots" it's working on.

That includes Glass, Self-Driving Cars, Drones, and all the other superfluous stuff they're throwing money at.

My suggestion -- focus -- on search. Redefine how we find information again; we're still looking at blue links on a white background with pagination.

In that regard, Google's been stagnant for over 10 years.

More interesting reading around "Tuned Mass Dampers" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuned_mass_damper
sscalia··on Can You Buy A License to Speed?
Actually, more than a ticket. They can impound your car.

However, most systems have an "alert then disable after X seconds" system - giving you time to slow, then disable the jam, allowing the LEO to get a 'speed' eventually (and chalk it up to his crappy LIDAR gun)

Take a look at the grilles of some exotic / fast cars. If you see devices inset that look like IR blasters -- those are LIDAR jammers.

sscalia··on The Truth About Google X: A Look Behind The Secretive Lab's Closed Doors
I'd love for them, you know -- to design radical new ways of visualizing and accessing the wealth of human knowledge, rather than spend their time with geeky pet projects that will never see the light of day.

Google search interface has been fundamentally unchanged since it launched in the 90's.

But you know, glass and self-driving cars and all that shit.

sscalia··on Can You Buy A License to Speed?
These work. Very much discussed in SV car clubs. Many spotted in my local Audi club.

This + LIDAR jammer = no tickets.

sscalia··on Memories of Steve
Really HN, you down vote this fucking comment? Unbelievable.
sscalia··on Memories of Steve
salgernon, Please check out the Four Hour Body by Tim Ferriss. You can change your life, get in shape, get healthy. It's so important.
sscalia··on Jony Ive shakes up Apple’s software design group
Complete conjecture.
sscalia··on Fog Creek's Intern Hiring Process
Am I the only one flabbergasted by the comp #'s thrown around in the article and in these threads?
sscalia··on Technichi: Macbook Subscription Service
Someone didn't like "spergy"

Heh.

sscalia··on Technichi: Macbook Subscription Service
Doesn't matter. Does Photoshop feel measurably faster on a 4 year old Macbook Pro vs. a new one? Does email? Does web browsing?

Minus some spergy cases (PC gaming, 3d rendering, virtualization, etc) most computers are just fine for everyday tasks for a long while.

sscalia··on Los Angeles Cops Argue All Cars in LA Are Under Investigation
This is already deployed in Europe, and the UK.
sscalia··on Los Angeles Cops Argue All Cars in LA Are Under Investigation
The answer is simple: keep a late model car, don't put on your license plates, and leave the dealer "paper" plate in the frame, and the "happy sticker" Temp DMV reg in the window.

Keep your car clean.

I haven't had a license plate on my car in 4 years. I'll never have one.

sscalia··on What Clinkle Is and Isn’t Building
Nothing new in this article at all.

Remove the CEO. Start over. No one at 22 can lead; especially not one coddled by the Stanford/quasi-ivy/ivy-league system.

sscalia··on Ship's cat

sscalia··on Comcast and Netflix now have a direct adjacency
Can you tell me why Netflix is so terrible on Uverse 20Meg in San Jose?

Blurry mess.

Speedtest is always 13Meg+

sscalia··on The troubled history of the Bitcoin exchange MtGox
I still cannot believe anyone has any "real" money tied up in something like MtGox. Disturbing, stunning.
sscalia··on Why Mt. Gox is full of shit
In case anyone needs a reminder:

Magic The Gathering Online Exchange.

Chase Manhattan, they are not.

sscalia··on Rapgenius Uniques Fall 90%
If you think this isn't happening all the time, everywhere -- you're mistaken.
sscalia··on Rapgenius Uniques Fall 90%
"Don't be evil"

Rapgenius got punished for playing the game better than anyone else.

Who's to say this couldn't happen to highly relevant sources of information? Wikipedia? Underground sites?

This is the equivalent of censorship.

sscalia··on [dead]
Yes. The "markets" are to blame.
sscalia··on [dead]
I really wish I knew how this problem pans out in the next 15-20 years.

Make no mistake, it is a problem - one that desperately needs attention.

If you think for one minute you will be sheltered from the concenquences of such income inequality, with your exorbitant compensation and home on the peninsula, you are sadly mistaken.

We are all interconnected; the generation of children raised in cites like San Pablo deserve an equal shot at success - the same as any privileged white, Asian or Indian child attending a private school in Palo Alto, Atherton, or Los Gatos.

I wish I had a solution. I really do.

I think it starts with wages; but it's hard to put that cat back in the bag.

I'm not sure when we decided it was okay for CEOs to make 300x what a worker does; or even that an engineer was worth 200k/year with a 100k signing bonus, while a skilled welder is worth half that, sacrificing their health and vision I literally build and grow this country.

Next time you negotiate another 30k on your employment contract, trade that for 2 weeks vacation and volunteer your time, ideas and money to those who could really benefit.

Reject the ever-rising insanity of our regions real estate, and try to be just a bit happier with what you have. A BMW 328i will get you to work in style - you don't need the M3.

I'm seeing the same conspicuous consumption that was often only seen in LA. If you want to see a pissed off populace, go ahead and get that Land Rover and Panerai.

See what happens when you're waking back to your car in the Mission.
