srg0··on Finland will seek NATO membership immediately
I hope not. Just saying that their stance towards Russia is ambivalent.
srg0··on Finland will seek NATO membership immediately
Turkey is a NATO member, but it didn't join the international sanctions.
srg0··on Yandex data center in Finland loses power due to contract termination
> It wasn't totally stupid plan, but it doesn't work if one party ceases to be interested in economics more than other grandiose plans.

It doesn't work if the other party is just one person (or few people) in power for over twenty years, and all open society institutions in that other country have been systematically suppressed.

What's a chance that the same person is capable and willing to represent all possible economic and society interests?

> The Great Illusion

Publication date: 1909; 1933. Interesting. The idea stood the test of time.

Personally I find that you did a great job with Kagi. I agree that the incentives are important, and I hope that Kagi will be successful and may prove that a different business model is possible. I'm also inclined to trust Kagi, but that's just that, trust and not much to lose.
srg0··on DuckDuckGo Removes Pirate Sites and YouTube-DL from Its Search Results
How is kagi more private? It requires an account to use, and it’s going to be a paid service. So it always has a strong user ID associated with every query. Whether it is not stored and not processed cannot be verified. It’s the same story about trust.
srg0··on -h –Help -help Help –? –?
I find it hilarious that on Windows there are commands using Windows style options (ipconfig, robocopy) and Unix style options (netstat, tracert). That's probably part of the POSIX compliance. So the list of possible help options to try is even longer: "/?", "-?", "/h", "-h", "/help", "-help", and "--help". For most of the utilities distributed by MS "/?" works even if the command uses dash options, but third party utilities usually support only their "native" options.

git /?: '/?' is not a git command. See 'git --help'.

    7z /?: Unsupported command

    psql /?: trying to connect
And for PowerShell cmdlets you should use "help Verb-Thing" or "help Verb-Thing --Online".

Just if the mess couldn't get any messier.

srg0··on Popular Patreon creators are being hit with Vimeo price hikes
A lesson to learn from this story: don’t use Vimeo if video is your business.
srg0··on Using hamburger menus? Try sausage links (2019)
I have a simple usability test. Can I use it one handed on my phone while riding a bike?

Hamburger menu: sort of, if my phone is small enough. Once I reach the menu I need only o e glance and one finger tap to select an option. I can remember where the option is located. Two short taps, looking at the screen twice.

Sausage links? I won’t even try. It requires to scroll horizontally a very small area, while watching it continuously. It doesn’t allow to see all options together. It doesn’t allow to remember where each option is located.

IMO sausage links is a dark pattern to hide menu options. It requires a very complex interaction just to see all available options.

srg0··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
These people have already pre-paid namecheap services.
srg0··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
Putin receives not only more money, it also makes censorship easier.
srg0··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
And the only way Russian people may get information and organise is online. So let’s disrupt operations of whatever Russian web remains accessible. Watching more propaganda TV should help.

Everyone should respect government imposed sanctions and laws. Infrastructure services should not discriminate beyond that. Denying service based on nationality of the client is akin to discriminating by gender, race, or faith.

Also it’s ok to pull from any market for whatever reason, and not renewing contracts, but kicking paying customers before the term of the (prepaid) service is over is just not cool.

srg0··on Ask HN: Is anyone else genuinely scared that this is the start of WW3?
On the other hand, even his Minister of Defense in times of war speaks to him from 10 or 15 meters away. Putin is paranoid and only select few ever come close to him. He had 23 years to select the most loyal people.

I bet Putin did consider possible coup scenarios.

If anything, I think it's more likely that people of Russia change their mind. Soldiers can surrender. Ordinary people can sabotage what they're doing. State officials and riot police can resign. All of that is unlikely, it requires to undo years of propaganda, and it has never happened in 23 years of Putin reign, but the situation is not ordinary either.

srg0··on Russia mistakenly posted post-war article about Ukraine joining Russia
I think it’s important to note that whoever wrote this article at the time of writing didn’t anticipate:

- the scale of the western sanctions

- the level of Ukrainian resistance

srg0··on Google Tag Manager, the new anti-adblock weapon (2020)
> I would gladly pay money to a trustworthy company to sanitize my traffic blocking every bit except what I really need to be there.

$0/month -> duckduckgo -> browser-level protection and email aliases

$1/month -> Mozilla -> browser-level protection and email aliases (relay.firefox.com)

$2/month -> NextDNS -> DNS-over-HTTPS with blocklists and tracking protection

$1/month -> Apple -> browser-level protection, Private Relay & Hide My Email

Blocking "every bit" is a hard problem.

srg0··on Google Search Is Dying
And if people are writing actual product reviews, where do they publish them now, given that blogs are dead and social networks are a black hole?
srg0··on Don't use text pixelation to redact sensitive information
I usually convert PDF to raster and draw over. White or light gray box overlay will save ink/toner for everyone and is just as opaque as a black box.

I still do pixelize with huge pixel size when information is not that important. I think it better conveys that there was something there, and redacted areas look more organic.

srg0··on Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes
Didn't know that.
srg0··on Nearly a third of TV ads play to empty rooms
That’s interesting. Do you have an idea what fraction of the YouTube premium fee goes to the content creators?
srg0··on Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes
Just so we’re clear, I don’t consider neither Neil Young nor hundreds of medical professionals to be idiots. I read the open letter too, and formed an opinion about what kind of podcast is Joe Rogan’s.

So at this point what matters is that Spotify made a deal with Joe Rogan, and thus Spotify is also responsible for whatever he fancies to broadcast.

As the only way to vote in this matter is my wallet, I considered cancelling the subscription. If I did I would also try to convince other people to do the same.

And frankly, Spotify was a better service without podcasts.

srg0··on Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes
I’m the opposite. I paid for Spotify subscription long before Joe Rogan deal, and never listened to any of his podcasts. I learned that they’re controversial after Neil Young was pulled from Spotify. I guess the message was delivered, and I actually considered cancelling my family subscription and switching to something else. I’m happy about their decision, and will remain their customer.
srg0··on Facebook loses users for the first time
I'm skeptical about Metaverse and collaborative VR in general:

* much higher barrier to entry (requires specialized hardware)

* much more difficult to produce content (3D worlds to build from the ground up vs text and images of the real world)

* less cool than most video games (YMMV, there might be good VR games, but toons with amputated legs flying around are not cool, and that's what we saw in the Facebook demo)

* several safety and social acceptance issues (basically, you don't see the real world when you're using a VR headset)

* VR is not fun to spectate (checkout twitch, there is not much VR content)

* VR has been around for many years already, and it stays... a niche game accessory.

srg0··on Naomi Wu video demonetized on YouTube
As someone who managed to live without knowing who is Naomi Wu (though I might have seen her once or twice in YouTube suggestions), I think it's more important what is the basis for demonetization than the personality. HN title says nothing about it, and it is useless for anyone who is not already following N.W. directly or indirectly.

I do not suggest to shorten her name though, that's me being lazy typing on the phone. And my suggested title even with the name written in full is not longer than some other approved titles on HN.

srg0··on Naomi Wu video demonetized on YouTube
This HN title would really benefit from being a little more specific: "N.W. Demonetized on YouTube for Display of Inanimate Objects That Resemble Human Nudity".
srg0··on Ask HN: Gmail account security
I configured Firefox to delete all cookies on exit, except few whitelisted sites. So most of the time I have to accept Google privacy policy if I search there. Other than that, I never got into the captcha hell when trying to do a Google Search.

There are some sites I can't login at all unless I change the browser. SoundCloud is one of them.

srg0··on I moved this blog from Medium, here
A mailto: link provides most of the advantages of the comments: a way to report errors, suggestions, ask questions and even get to know each other.

And it uses the most popular federated protocol, so most users won't have to create a n ew account.

Also spam is not a problem, comments stay private.

srg0··on StackOverflow: Sunsetting Jobs and Developer Story by April 2022
It might be a good idea to archive current job offers in your local area. I always checked if a company had anything posted on SO Jobs. It was a clear indicator that engineering and development had priority. It also spoke a lot about their culture and work environment.

srg0··on Google requiring all ‘G Suite legacy free edition’ users to start paying
ZOHO mail works for me. The entry level premium account is €0.9/user/month. Free tier is reasonable too (up to 5 users). I find their web UI a bit overloaded with features, but they have all check boxes crossed.
srg0··on Google requiring all ‘G Suite legacy free edition’ users to start paying
I'd say that a year or a year + 3 months is a reasonable transition period.

People need to assess the situation, evaluate existing solutions (including paying for the service), what needs to be done, etc. They're not doing it as their job, so do not necessarily know the current market offers.

Then they need to allocate time and resources to do the transition. Time, when the transition is the least disruptive, and the resources are usually availability if an in-house specialist. I know plenty of companies where upgrading a software take more than a year, with all their budgets, IT departments and external contractors. A typical G Suite user won't have all that expertise readily available.

That means that the transition will often require an IT enthusiast working in their free time. It's reasonable to assume that they will have at least one vacation per year to do that. So if the transition is ≥ 12 month, everyone and their mom should be able to do it.

If the transition is 3-5 months, I can see how it can be a problem even for commercial users with a dedicated task force.
