The founders got their start selling pirated software, but CD Projekt itself started as a legit importer and localiser. Their initial success was due to knowing that they needed to compete with pirates on quality and convenience because piracy was so prevalent in Poland.

srfvtgb··on Steam hits 10M concurrent in-game players in record-breaking weekend
Lets not forget that Valve was one of the early adopters of loot boxes with Counter Strike and TF2.
srfvtgb··on Madison Square Garden Uses Facial Recognition to Ban Its Owner’s Enemies
Anecdotally, the plan isn't very popular with those who live in the area.

srfvtgb··on Ask HN: Why is it so hard to disrupt Ticketmaster?
I think big artists need to start doing what some large sporting events do and sell a significant proportion of tickets on a ballot system. Instead of being first come first served, anyone who registered to buy a ticket (possibly paying a deposit to disincentivize duplicate entries) would go in the draw for the opportunity to buy a ticket, preventing things turning into an auction benefiting those who have the fastest bots.
srfvtgb··on Poll: Would You Work for Elon?
Elon is a wartime CEO in the same way that Putin is a wartime president.
srfvtgb··on An unwilling illustrator found herself turned into an AI model
>unless we consider the labels the people it was supposed to protect

You've hit the nail on the head there. The same record companies that got up to very dodgy copy protection schemes [1].

As long as it doesn't have the robotic text-to-speech that seems to be on every TikTok video.
srfvtgb··on Surging Energy Prices in Europe in the Aftermath of the War
I guess the headline means aftermath as in consequences (or aftermath of _declaration of_ war)
srfvtgb··on Understanding Jane Street
So you didn't get as rich as you could have and might not get to retire at 30, go live your life. A friend of mine and I both applied for a HFT firm out of university, he got in and I didn't, but based on how he described it over about 18 months working there, my greatest regret would have been taking that job, it sounded like a dismal place to work (with platinum handcuffs).
srfvtgb··on Elden Ring figured out the anti-piracy SEO game
Why is that tweet is just a screenshot of another tweet?
srfvtgb··on You either die an MVP or live long enough to build content moderation
You lose out on the network effect with this solution.

If someone gets to pick who's allowed onto a network, then they won't bother using it. Maybe your friends will join since they are allowed to add _their_ friends, but those friends of friends wouldn't bother because most of their friends can't join, meaning your friends won't bother either unless they really want to talk to you specifically.

It would work for groups where most people know each other, but there are already options for that that allow users to be in groups that aren't all owned by the same person e.g. Discord, Signal, Facebook.

srfvtgb··on Fears London and Paris would die due to Covid are unfounded, finds survey
It would be interesting to see similar data for other large cities which posters on HN have been predicting/reporting mass exoduses from such as the Bay Area.

Apple has been doing this for a while and it hasn't had much effect outside devices which run their software: 
srfvtgb··on An alternative to hiring and paying employees – the Qbix Compensation Model
Even if it were possible to accurately attribute revenue to particular contributions, I could see this compensation model leading to short term thinking. For example a contribution may generate a lot of revenue now, but could end up costing more when a security hole causes you to lose all your customers data. And who will fix bugs that don't directly contribute to revenue? Or work on behind the scenes code which isn't directly monetizable? Maybe this could work as a factor in a bonus that is a small portion of total compensation, but as a driver of total compensation there are far too many issues.
srfvtgb··on The worst volume control UI in the world (2017)
My company was a fairly early adopter of Teams. I remember there being a user feedback forum that was such an optimistic place. Fixing notifications was one of the highest voted issues and the MS rep promised work was being done on it, but it never got fixed before we finally accepted the increased cost and moved to Slack.
srfvtgb··on Lambda: The Ultimate Excel Worksheet Function
I guess they mean without writing VBA code.
srfvtgb··on ‘Counter Strike’ Bug Allows Hackers to Take over a PC with a Steam Invite
Didn't EAC drop native support for Linux when they were acquired by Epic Games?
srfvtgb··on World Beer Index 2021: The Cost and Consumption of Beer Around the World
The gap between off and on-license prices (i.e. supermarket versus bar) will differ depending on country as well. As anecdata, I found that in the UK, buying beer from a supermarket tended to be more expensive than my home country of New Zealand, but buying beer in a pub was usually cheaper. I guess in New Zealand we charge a much higher alcohol tax to on-licenses rather than off-licenses.
srfvtgb··on World Beer Index 2021: The Cost and Consumption of Beer Around the World
Pretty sure Americans buy their beer in ounces. 330ml is very popular in New Zealand and the UK.

srfvtgb··on Dropbox to cut 11% of its global workforce

srfvtgb··on U.S. to require negative Covid-19 tests for international air passengers
NZ currently requires a negative test if you are coming from the UK or US as well as 14 day quarantine for arrivals from anywhere (with more tests). You can also only return if you are a NZ citizen or permanent resident or you get some kind of special dispensation (notable recipients of these include film crews and America's Cup sailors).
srfvtgb··on Facebook buying ads for Messenger to be top result when you search for 'Signal'
I don't know if this is still the case, but for a while the easiest way to get the best deal from Dominoes was to search Google for Pizza Hut with your adblocker turned off.
srfvtgb··on Facebook buying ads for Messenger to be top result when you search for 'Signal'
Seems like a pretty blatant antiturst violation if this is happening consistently.
srfvtgb··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
Whether ad targeting works or not, Cambridge Analytica did show that Facebook was willing to abuse the data people are trusting them with.
srfvtgb··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
A lot of people mention Telegram, as far as I can tell, it's a worse Signal. What advantages does it have over Signal?
srfvtgb··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
Fortunately I don't live in a place where WhatsApp is completely pervasive. I personally had luck saying "if you want to contact me use Signal, iMessage or at the very least SMS" and when people asked why, I would cite Cambridge Analytica.
srfvtgb··on Google Maps' Moat Is Evaporating
One of my favourite features of Citymapper when I lived in London was how they would let you filter routes by trains that had air conditioning for the complete hideousness that was summer 2019. Another interesting one I noticed was that they would increase the size of the "navigate home" button after a certain time of day.
