sreyaNotfilc··on Ask HN: How do I overcome mental laziness?
Q: "How do I overcome mental laziness?"

A: Do the thing you feel you're suppose to do, and not the thing that you're currently doing.

It really is that simple. While you have spent the time writing about how not to be mentally lazy and reading comments on possible answers, you've could've - knocked out a chapter or two in a certification book - built that module you've pushed aside - pursue working on a weakness that you feel is holding you back

Fortunately/unfortunately, the onus falls on you to reach your goals (whatever it may be). So, just do it!

sreyaNotfilc··on Ask HN: Who is hiring right now?
(Sorry for flooding this comment section)

This is pretty rad! My nieces love this game (rather play this than the Switch). They would be psyched if I landed a job here.

I do have the years of experience but and completing my Bachelor's CompSci this fall. So, I'm thinking that it would be better to apply later on.

sreyaNotfilc··on Katherine Johnson, NASA mathematician, has died at 101
My Dad and I watched 'Hidden Figures' a couple of weekends ago. Its such a great movie. To think that this one person was able to do that floored me.

I told my Dad how lucky we are to be born with various abilities that we then nurture and develop. The sky's the limit when we do the things we were "born" to do.

This lady's mind was really meant to doing such calculations. So good!

I'm not sure if she wanted that attention, but she deserved it. I'm sure, being 97 years old and now getting famous isn't that bad. I can't imagine people taking too many photographs and interviews of here.

sreyaNotfilc··on Show HN: Dating Site Without Pictures
I really like that idea a lot!

I know, for me, when dating either I cannot think of things to say, or the date couldn't think of things to say. When you're on your computer (or phone) you have tons of time to get things moving.

I have a lot of ideas now from the one you stemmed. Maybe I'll be the one who builds this. I am in the middle of another site, but this would be fun to try as well. If it every turns into something, I'll make sure to look you up and thank you .

sreyaNotfilc··on The Classic Tetris World Championships Explained (2018) [video]
I've been a fan of CTWC for the past 4 years. Jonas is amazing and can explain his strategies very well.

My eyes lights up when a new CTWC video is published on YouTube.

I find the competition engaging. Its insane how compelling falling blocks can be. But that's thanks to the great community and commentators.

Seeing the sudden rise of Joseph (as well as the other competitors) just makes me so happy.

I've never really played Tetris although I grew up with it (I'm 35 years old now). Even now, I've never would have came up with those elite strategies to win this game.

But, now seeing these guys push the boundary of what can be done has me itching to learn this game. Who knows, maybe next year I'll be able to compete. I'd definitely like to see it live next year.

sreyaNotfilc··on An interview with Barbara Liskov
You know, I've heard about the Liskov substitution principle but have never really equated it with anyone (especially living). Its nice to see that some pioneers in our field is still alive and well.
sreyaNotfilc··on Huawei Mate 30 phones launch without Google apps
I somewhat agree. Yes, the back isn't that noticeable when actually using it. But its noticeable now. Even to the point where people I know who loves their iPhones say that its "ugly".

Apple is not known to make "ugly" devices. Their devices are practical and engineered thoughtfully.

Having the camera in the top left corner as opposed to the center seems like a mistake to me. Especially since they are promoting the camera to be a significant upgrade. Put it front and center!

Apple's history on device (at least with Jobs) always was have a fully functional revolutionary machine that was easy to use and beautiful inside and out. They've been that way since the Macintosh. The look was much user-friendly and approachable. They even signed the inside of the box as if they are presenting a piece of art. Even the font-face they introduced was to promote artistry in the technical world.

My point is, the iPhone 11 is an amazing device, but the look of their biggest new feature, the cameras, does not fit well with their history of artistic prowess. Steve Jobs would have never OKed this design placement.

sreyaNotfilc··on Huawei Mate 30 phones launch without Google apps
After seeing the iPhone11 Pro, Pixel 4, and the Mate 30 Pro I have to say that the Mate 30 implemented the 3 camera the best. Its less of an eyesore being in the center of the device instead of the top left corner.

Also, the bezel around it makes it look like a device that's a phone and a camera instead of "hiding the fact" that its a phone that happens to have photo capabilities. I really like the design.

Too bad for the lack of Android/Google apps, for I would have considered getting one.

sreyaNotfilc··on Popeyes Chicken Sandwich Is an Economic Indicator
Oh, I agree. My sister works in the fast-food industry. She never knows what days she have off. Its horrible. Chick-fil-A is doing something right here.
sreyaNotfilc··on Popeyes Chicken Sandwich Is an Economic Indicator
I like Chick-fil-A's wafers. They are so tasty. Its the main reason why I would go there.
sreyaNotfilc··on Popeyes Chicken Sandwich Is an Economic Indicator
When I first took a bite out of Popeye's chicken sandwich I had two immediate thoughts.

1. This thing is delicious!!

2. Poor poor Chick-fil-A. Popeye's sandwich is much better. And I can eat it any day of the week.

sreyaNotfilc··on Show HN: Summer Pledge – you have 72 days until the end of summer
I pledged and am close to finishing my project. This site may not get traction, but I think its pretty cool to remind yourself that being done is a very important step to success. "Great Artists Ship"

Hopefully in a week I'll have the finishing touches on my project and then can share it with everyone (here and on the pledge site).

sreyaNotfilc··on YouTube Lets Users Override Recommendations After Criticism
You may be joking, but that's a great way to earn some revenue for doing essentially nothing.

There's a guy who goes into the woods and takes videos of that environment along with great sound quality.

sreyaNotfilc··on YouTube Lets Users Override Recommendations After Criticism
It really depends. If its a silent video, yea I can see why its bogus. But, if its background noise, then yes its useful.

Sometimes when I have trouble sleeping, I search "white noise" and find videos like this. Usually I click on something like a 'fan blowing' video or a 'thunder storm' video. The noise/pattern combination somehow helps me sleep. It also helps me relax and focus while working.

sreyaNotfilc··on How I Got my $3500 Camera Kit Stolen on KitSplit
Unfortunately, KitSplit couldn't go back in the past and write policies like this.

Reminds me of a quote from Fight Club - "Sometimes you've got to crack a few eggs to make an omelette" ~ Tyler Durden

Yes, it was a huge oversight, but the past is the past. A bad thing had happen. But, KitSplit has now taken corrective actions to fix this as well as prevent this from happening in the future.

I don't think this is the time to disparage their service because of one incident. It was unfortunate, but .. come'on the author is a big boy as well. He could've read the complete TOS before hand. After all, he's parting ways with a $3,500 piece of equipment. He didn't have a problem writing a blog about this and expected people to read what he wrote. So, why not see exactly what you're getting into.

The internet has been around for quite a while now, and there's always scammers out there (on both ends).

Moving forward, I would hope that KitSplit not only ensures these insurance policies but do some trail-blazing a little bit on this type of thing.

A couple of ideas - 1. Maybe have their policies clearly written on their platform. Or better yet, address this on the homepage and create a "how-to" video on this so people know how the new policy will be enforced.

2. Trackability - Add a required tracking mechanism to be placed on the device, so if it is stolen/manipulated it can be easily reported to the an authority

3. Fraud form - Create an easy to use form for reporting stolen items. This data can then be sent to the local police, etc to try to find and capture the culprit. Basically, it could do the things that are in KitSplit's policy.

4. Expose a monthly report on incidents like that and the amount refunded/recouped.

These are just at the top of my head. I'm sure they could think of more ways to ensure that everyone on all sides are being honest.

sreyaNotfilc··on YouTube is working with Universal Music Group to remaster iconic music videos
I wonder if AI is capable to be used to do a restoration of things like music videos, concerts, and old broadcasts. I remember seeing a video about how AI is used in video games to render photo realistic backgrounds.

It may be this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9OofzEMBAk

I think that one day this will totally be possible. Can you imagine, with the help of future technology and algorithms, watching film from the 1940s (Gone with the Wind) that looks just as sharp and real as a modern day movie in 4k? Or even, seeing a concert (Michael Jackson) from the 80s that looks so clear that you can really feel what its like to be there?

sreyaNotfilc··on Show HN: Bowlr – A robust, feature-rich bowling tracker app for all bowlers
Yes, lets continue our thoughts through email. I'll send something for you this evening. My email is admin@vidcap.co.
sreyaNotfilc··on Show HN: Bowlr – A robust, feature-rich bowling tracker app for all bowlers
Good Question! Its not that other apps do not track lane patters and what not. They do.

For me, I find that tracking software is too much analytics and no real payoff. They are just lists of scores with not much meaning behind it. After a while, you forget why you've done a bad/good job. For me, when I make mistakes bowling, I just simply write down the note and store in my notepad on my cell. There I can write text notes for what's going on with myself.

Maybe a good solution for this frame of mind is to showcase users who have improved over time with your app. Of course, they would have to opt in for that, but that may sway someone like me to giving this software a go.

There's so much more in this space that you can do besides simple analytics.

I have a lot of ideas for this, but wouldn't want to bombard you with suggestions unless you're interested. I and am actually planning an web app and will start developing on it soon (have to finish another app first).

I will say that congratulation in gaining some traction on Reddit. Its hard to get the courage to list your project there, for the response can go either way. With you the best of luck with this.

sreyaNotfilc··on Show HN: A note taking platform built on top of YouTube
This a very cool concept. Its a bit rough around the edges, but I see the potential.

I do have a question, did you build this yourself or do you have a team? Also, is there a link where we can try out the app?

sreyaNotfilc··on Show HN: Bowlr – A robust, feature-rich bowling tracker app for all bowlers
From the screenshot, it looks like a pretty well made application. I bowl a lot and know of a few bowler tracking apps. This one seems a clean as the rest.

That said, I never use these tracking apps since every game, especially in sports shot, varies from lane to lane and night to night.

I'm hesitant on spending money of the bat to see if I like it or not. Is there a way you could add a trial mode (say 10 games free)?

I think more people would go for it.

sreyaNotfilc··on Show HN: Online Coaching Made Simple
The layout of the homepage is nice, but it doesn't really show what I would be in for as far as this product.

1. What does the interface looks like while you're coaching?

2. Are there any public coaching sessions/demos that you could show as well?

3. How does one earn $100/hr with this product?

4. Most importantly, how does one find their desired coaching?

5. @anthony-thomas doesn't exist

I'm guessing these are just ideas you would like to explore.

That's a really big ask to expect someone to sign up just to "Get Started". All I know is that you could very well be collecting emails just to collect them. Also, the need to add your social network items seems like much right out of the gate. Unless this product scrapes those networks to help find leads, I would reserve that to the user's settings.

Also, I don't think you would need to send HD webcams to projected teachers. I'm willing to bet that most people looking to do this would already have a camera (either on laptop or phone) that they could use.

sreyaNotfilc··on Why Workers Without College Degrees Are Fleeing Big Cities
The more I think about SF the more I shudder. There's an interesting video "How to Fix San Francisco" what a guy uses Google Maps to showcase the structure of the town. It was eye opening. SF is jammed packed with people. From the skyview it looks grey with streets and buildings. No nature, no parks, nothing.

But why (serious question)? Other than A) Growing up there and B) Silicon Valley bragging rights the city does not seem to have much going for it. Yet, people still live there and pay a hefty price to do-so.

sreyaNotfilc··on Niki Lauda has died
I didn't know much about Formula 1 until I saw the movie 'Rush'. Its one of my favorites, an had opened my eyes to a lot of things. I left the movie wanting to be as pragmatic and brilliant as Niki Lauda (I failed). He knew what he wanted, how to do it, and execute successfully. Admirable.

I was going to see a F1 race this year (Austin) and hoped to have met the man. It was amazing that he was still out there with his team.

Anyway, here's my favorite scene from the movie.

"Niki Lauda meets his wife" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Kl0UBS4ZaM

BTW everytime I heard his name I yell out "Niki Lauda Niki Lauda" like the men in the clip.

sreyaNotfilc··on Newest coworking space costs just $2.25 an hour, because it is a parking spot
I believe that my stance still stands.

Say a lot of people join the bandwagon and become activists in this manner. Or even that, say someone is thinking that this is actually a great idea and starts buying up Parkmobile spots to.

Sitting in a parking lot, no matter what the cause or circumstance is, is a recipe for disaster.

Its still a highly unsafe thing to do.

sreyaNotfilc··on Newest coworking space costs just $2.25 an hour, because it is a parking spot
I saw 'San Francisco' and rolled my eyes. This is the dumbest idea I have seen in a while.

What if someone runs you over trying to back into a spot? What if something falls from the sky (besides rain)? Or someone runs off with your equipment because your weren't looking? Or even, its a busy day and someone didn't reserve a parking spot.

Putting your workers at risk because you're trying to save some dough is highly irresponsible.

sreyaNotfilc··on Ask HN: How do you stay disciplined in the long run?
I'm on and off again on my project, Vidcap. What keeps me going is that I actually use the product that I build. I see the issues with it and then get fed up that it's not fixed.

What I end up doing is just simply opening the editor, write down some notes on what I like to be done, and just work on it. Once you start, your body takes over. Its just getting to that point that's the problem.

Same thing with music for me. I want to have a stage show next year, but I need to learn the guitar to make it happen. I bought a portable guitar and bring it with me most places (since its getting nice out). Whenever I think of that stage show, I bring out the guitar and start working on it. What would be 5 mins of playing almost always turns to 30+ mins.

So, what I would say is do 2 things -

1. Think about the project that you want to work on. Just simply being aware that the time you spend playing games or watching TV you could be working on something. Heck, I have the TV on while coding and guitar practice.

2. Do something about it. Say to yourself "Let me do this for 15 mins". Those minutes usually double and triple.

(BONUS)

When I really need the pep talk and motivation, I listen to those motivational channels on Youtube. My favorite one is of Arnold Schwarzenegger talking about how he became who he was. It definitely wasn't hard work. You don't need to listen to him. You can find plenty of those types of videos in your field. Whatever it takes to get that jolt of energy.

Goodluck!

sreyaNotfilc··on Ask HN: I lost my ability to focus for hours on coding. How to regain?
I agree. Remove the phone will pay dividends. I started leaving my phone in my car after work and already I'm seeing benefits with my afternoon/evening. I'm able to get more done as well as have a full night's sleep.

There's something about the phone that just keeps me distracted. So, I just don't bother with it.

sreyaNotfilc··on Facebook stored millions of Instagram passwords in plain text
I wonder how much of this is the responsibility on how Instagram was built. Like Instagram may have been built so fast that those things never were accounted for.

Not that I'm giving Facebook excuses, but maybe something was overlooked before acquisition. Then again, Facebook is breaching security protocols left and right.
