OK, this is getting ridiculous. There is no best practices. You think a company worth Billions would have a standard of ethics.

Afterall, that's what they interview on. Best Practices. Ethics.

Doesn't Facebook have blogs on things like efficient servers, algorithms and such. They are obviously at the forefront of technology (or know about it). Why aren't they implementing these things?

It seems to me that the more your company is worth, the less you get to bend rules, all to chase more money. HR an lawyers will take care of the rest.

sreyaNotfilc··on Show HN: MCU Movies – Movie information and all the latest MCU news
This is very cool. I love the layout. Its beautifully made and straight forward.

The MCU are all connected in one way or another. There is a cause and effect of everything. There are also cameos from other characters in the stand alone ones. I wonder if you could explore that. Maybe something like -

Have a timeline of each character. What they are doing, and what they know at the beginning and the end of the movie. So for example, in Iron Man, Ant Man is just a lowly cat burglar. His timeline would most likely be that way until his first movie.

Or even Thanos, during Iron Man is searching for the Infinity Stones and has tracked them to Earth. He's plotting some action for retrieving it back.

Just some hypothetical that may flush out the site. If you're looking for commerce, perhaps there's a ways to use Fandango to sell tickets. Or even sell merch. I'm not sure how Disney would like the latter, but it may work out in your favor.

Fantastic site!

sreyaNotfilc··on Netlify Dev
I'm currently using it for my website https://vidcap.co (its on beta). There are three things that I'm using it for, but I'm sure other features goes pretty deeply.

1. Pairs the domain with the file server - I can buy a domain on Godaddy and then have it pair to my Netlify fileserver. Its pretty easy to get started. In the past I used Godaddy for everything, but now I do not have to.

2. Deployment mangement. If you have Github, you can setup automatic deployments to the production server. So, when you save some code and push it to Github, it will then push that code to your live server. In the past I would have to manually copy those files over. Now, I'm not sure exactly how to push manually through Netlify (I really need to brush up on it), so I turn it off if I'm working on some items that shouldn't get pushed quite yet.

3. It comes with security certificate (https) without any additional cost. In fact what I'm using is the free tier. I'm able to deploy an entire site for free (well my Azure server is costing me money, but still).

Hope that helps!

sreyaNotfilc··on Calvin and Hobbes Is Great Literature
Reminds me of The Lion King

I watched as an adult a couple years ago and my eyes were opened. I use to love the kid Simba, but I can see him almost like a spoiled brat. I understood why adult Simba was so unsure of himself even though he was bigger and stronger. Why Mufasa was so forgiving of his son even though he starts so much trouble.

I may have to check out the C&H comics again. Yukon Ho was the best!

sreyaNotfilc··on How My Fears Doomed My First Startup
I'm willing to do whatever it takes to take charge of my life. Right now, its the whole "well, I'm not dying" mentality that keeps us in our place. We get comfortable and never just move forward.

This sounds like a good technique to bring urgency back into the situation. We don't have forever to face our fears. We only have a lifetime and that's a pretty short time.

I'll see if it works.

sreyaNotfilc··on Show HN: YouTube Code Along Editor
It seems to be working off an on. I'm able to search videos now. Pretty cool!

Are you going to expand upon this idea?

sreyaNotfilc··on Show HN: YouTube Code Along Editor
I'm using Chrome. I'll try it again at home. Maybe something is blocked where I'm at.
sreyaNotfilc··on Show HN: YouTube Code Along Editor
I'm trying it out now. I'm trying to check the search feature. I'm assuming that it will display YouTube previews when you select 'Search'.

Right now, I'm not seeing anything populate.

The other features work though (e.g. the text editor and font-changing). Am I doing something wrong?

sreyaNotfilc··on Is porn making young men impotent?
I'm struggling with it. I guess that realizing that it is a problem helps. Remember, porn is not the problem, abuse of it is.

Its to the point that I can't sleep well without it. That's bad.

What I'm doing, right now, is to create a simple chart of the days that I venture to the "dark side". So when I do go, I know in the back of my mind that I will have to write this stuff down.

Another step is, when you find yourself going down that rabbit hole, to do you best to stop it immediately. Your mind is very clever at making excuses like "You deserve to see this. Its just this one time. Promise." For me, what I ended up having to do is to get out of the room of the device and let myself relax.

Its getting warmer out. So I'll probably take a walk around the block if I notice the habit returning. I want to get rid of it so badly.

Support groups are out there either virtually or in person. Perhaps that's another way to go about it.

Good luck!

sreyaNotfilc··on My Twitch Live Coding Setup
I just launched my beta site, Vidcap.co. It was a lot of work and I was thinking all along that it would've been interesting to stream or YouTube the whole 5 month process.

The night of launch was a tough night since I didn't understand at the time how to deploy on Azure.

Unfortunately I didn't record at all. It would've been nice to have something like that, even if no on watched. Even if one person watched, they would see that sometimes the "easy" thing takes a lot of persistence and nail biting to make it happy for some.

I agree, it helps keep you on task because you feel that you owe it to your "fans" to put on a show. Maybe from no on I will stream just for the hell of it.

Do you have a project by the way?

sreyaNotfilc··on Show HN: A Good CompSci T-shirt, Inspired by Donald Knuth
I tried to get through his books. Man, there's so much math. Gotta brush up on Calculus again.

Anyway, this is great. Its nice to honor those before them. I'm being cheep this year, so I'm not going to make many impulse purchases this year.

I would totally get the Dennis Ritchie shirt. Learning about him was my first assignment in CS101.

Maybe also have Charles Babbage. I learned about him back in 5th grade. Very VERY important guy in computing history.

sreyaNotfilc··on Show HN: Latest Movie Trailers all at one place
Still relevant. Don't let other people's comments (links to sites that kinda does this) be the end-all on this project.

You can still build this site into something great. A few ideas...

1. Pre-Order options 2. IMDB tie-end : This could be both for the actors, and directors (and his/her previous movies). 3. Previous Movies in series: Take a look at the DBZ movie, this isn't the first movie in the series. Maybe a capture of previous movies in the series. 4. Release date/countdown and Excitement meter.

I have a ton of ideas actually that may help you, but there is a start. I do like the interface. Its open and clean. Keep at it, I can't wait to see what's next.

sreyaNotfilc··on Ask HN: How do you come up with side projects?
Like everyone has said, a side project is one that scratches an itch you have. Basically, what day-2-day functionality needs improving the most. And, do you have the capacity to improve it (or think you can)? From there, the side project is born.

My current side project stemmed from another side project actually.

I wanted to make (basically) an art version of Reddit, but much more robust. It would have cool apps that would make the artist's life much better. I had (and still do) a ton of idea on how to do that, so I started building. I've made many versions, but it still wasn't quite "right".

I have release it, but there was no traction (no should there be, its a crudely built website).

While building the latest version, the project became more and more robust. I had some cool components in it, one in particular and came to a fork in the road. Should I continue on with the Big project, or spin-off a component?

I chose the spin-off and thus my project Vidcap was born. I'm about a week away from releasing it after about a month of develoment. The goal would be to help people annotate their favorite videos to get more information out of it.

Will I ever go back to the other idea, artjutsu? Of course. Its still a passion of mine and something that I want to finish, but I think that Vidcap could be something that could help me achieve that goal (and help others) much more quickly.

If you'd like to take a look (before I post it on Show HN) be my guest - http://artjustu.com/vidcap/index.html?q=4

sreyaNotfilc··on Learning a new skill by putting in 45 minutes a day for a month
I think every advice can be malleable. Just getting started and seeing some results (whether its 20 hours, or 2000 hours) is what matters.

I would say after 20 hours is a good sample size and that you should have a good indication on -

1. Where your skill level really is

2. What your current aptitude for learning said skill

3. How you feel about learning the skill and potentially going forward

4. Where you would like to go next to further push that skill

From there you may revise the course that you're on (add or reduce the time invested).

For me, I do like having 45 mins chunk of time to work through a problem. Its give me time to understand the goal, and get invested. 45 mins tends to fly by so you're not fatigued afterwards. Then you can rest and reflect.

That's how I'm handling my trumpet work (learning scales and songs).

sreyaNotfilc··on Facebook ends platform policy banning apps that copy its features
Exactly!

It really is suppose to be "couldn't care less". Meaning, that they are at level 0/100 of the caring meter.

But as languages go, we tend to move towards an easier way to say the same thing.

"could care less" sounds similar, means the same, and that most people associates it with the former phrase.

The one in the link above wrote the name of the rocket (Starship) and I was still intrigued by it.

sreyaNotfilc··on Teenager beats Tetris game older than he is to become world champion [video]
They keep taking the entire event down (~7 hours of competition) on the CTCW YouTube page, but luckily someone thought ahead and recorded the Semi-Finals.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHMLwgE4ZG8

I've been following competitive Tetris for the past 2 years now. It slid into my YT feed and I've been hooked.

I got to watch the stream live!

Jonas is the man! He's won it multiple times and plays a beautiful game. I thought he had the kid, Joseph, for a moment with a +100k lead. But, as he topped out Joseph was able to keep his composure. I was beautiful to watch and I gave him a standing ovation (from my living room).

The cool thing is, the kid worked hard at the game for about a year before joining the competition. He studied videos on YouTube and just became obsessed with the game. He's the next wave (which the Tetris community had been discussing for the past few years), and its cool to see that this game is not dead yet. Its virtual chess.

The Tetris community is a good one. Its seems as if everyone backs everyone. There are no egos, just humble-pie Tetris. Jonas was a class act at the end congratulating the kid.

If you have a chance, please watch the video. You'll be amazed with the skill/tactics involved in this game.

edit Here's the winning match! Just watched it again. It give me goosebumps! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9rXBQLfjjE

sreyaNotfilc··on Show HN: A list of programmers coding live
You feel connected and motivated. It also can be fascinating seeing how people go about doing things (well or not).

I don't watch people code, but I do watch people study (or have it on while I code).

Yesterday, I was doing some after-work hobby-coding while listening to ChilledCow (on YouTube). There's a cartoon girl studying and writing in a notebook. The animation revamps endlessly, while lofi hip-hop is playing in the background. I have it on, because its very soothing to have something on and grind through a task after work.

This is actually a thing. Another channel "The Strive Studies" features a girl studying for her medical licence (something like that). Just jazz music and 1-3 hours of her reading and typing.

Basically, anything can become social, and coding/studying while someone is coding/studying can become highly motivating. You know they are going through the same stress and working towards some goal. Its fun to be part of that process. But, it somehow opens your mind up that "you are not alone".

So, yea, virtual study/coding groups are a great way to motivate.

sreyaNotfilc··on Ask HN: What was the best decision you made in your career?
Thanks for the words. I'll keep that in mind.

I'm actually planning on leaving this place soon. I've been with the same group of people for a while and it seems nothing is going to change.

I'm planning on letting the new place, wherever it is, know from the start about my desires for getting work done as well as R&R.

...or just start a business of my own. We'll see.

sreyaNotfilc··on Ask HN: What was the best decision you made in your career?
That hits close to home for me recently. I was very attached to the company I work for that I sacrificed myself for it. I've, in a way, lost who I am as a person, and became more-or-less a tool that produces code. Not a human at all.

About a month ago, I put in leave for the first time in 4 years. I rarely take the day off, so this was a big deal. And, I felt kinda guilty doing it. Even though the rest of the team took their time off, I felt I had to be the responsible one.

Well, the week before the leave was to occur, we had an "important demo" to get ready for. This demo was something out of the blue, but I was asked to still work during my leave. I said "OK" an was really pissed.

That night I couldn't sleep. I felt that I put in all my quality work, why can I not take my proper leave like everyone else? The next day, I put my leave back in and took a nice restful week off last week!

The world didn't end. I'm still employed, and the demo (the all important demo) was canceled because other devs haven't even finished their work.

It felt good to be detached emotionally. Never again will I sacrifice my personal time again at work. Its not worth it to yourself, and also to the company.

sreyaNotfilc··on Show HN: Xkcd mario-ish: a playable xkcd mario level
I think that's the best part. It was fun just jumping down a pit and then flying out of it to explore some more. I had to stop playing because I'm at work and all. But, looking around seems pretty fun.
sreyaNotfilc··on Bing.com now runs on .NET Core
I was talking with a friend yesterday. He got a position as a manager for a group of Java/Oracle devs. We started talking about how being a manager wasn't all its cracked up to be. We are coders and we are really good at what we do.

What makes coding more "fun" is the .NET framework. It had its headaches, but its a really nice and polished framework for getting things up and running. Especially with web building. .NET 4+, C#, and Core are Microsoft's message to the development world that they hear us.

Here's hoping they continue with this trend.

sreyaNotfilc··on Facebook addiction linked to staking your self-worth on social acceptance
LOL, I just noticed I did the same thing just now. Ugh, the points.

I'm working on a site as well that has up votes. Mostly to eliminate spam.

I'm going to have the points hidden by default.

sreyaNotfilc··on Facebook addiction linked to staking your self-worth on social acceptance
Wow, this topic is so relevant to me.

I felt that I've became obsessed with "likes" recently on Reddit. Well, they call it karma. But, same thing.

Karma points are kinda hard to get. Mainly because there are 3 things that has to happen -

1. Write your comment early enough 2. Write something witty enough 3. The thread needs to become somewhat popular

Sports threads, mainly Game threads, are a gold mine for karma. I found, recently that I wrote things there partly because I loved the team and atmosphere (Braves fan), but also because I love refreshing and seeing all 'dem karma points.

I've became so obsessed that I realized I had a problem. Each time I go onto Reddit (the new version), my eyes immediately darts to the top right of the screen to see if I went up or down. It became distracting that I looked for ways to turn it off.

Reddit's user settings, from what I saw, doesn't have anything that will hide those points. Luckily, I could revert back to the old Reddit layout.

Funny thing is, I'm barely on the Game threads now that I cannot see those points.

sreyaNotfilc··on How Musicians Make Money, Or Don’t, In 2018
And that what it boils down to, promotion. Can you out promote the next guy? And, if you're likable or not. If so, you get (at least) a listen to.

Can you promote and make quality work? Doesn't have to be high quality, but good enough that you'd listen to it a lot and share it with your friends.

Ed Sheeran is not the best singer/musician in the world. But, he and his music is constantly in rotation. Not everyone has the backing of Warner Music. However, I'm guessing he and his music is likable and talented enough to hold people's attention.

sreyaNotfilc··on Facebook’s New Message to WhatsApp: Make Money
Maybe its my warped understanding of how multi-billion dollar boardrooms are ran.

To me, its not necessarily how well are our projects doing. Its more, squeeze out the most we can get from every asset and then squeeze for more.

I understand that Facebook will run just fine with or without the 20%, but I can imagine hearing this news and then looking around the room to find what acquisitions haven't performed well. Almost like a "What have you done for me lately?" vibe. Yes, its a bit warped to think that way (but fun too).

sreyaNotfilc··on Facebook has asked U.S. banks to share financial information about customers
Goodness, why can't Facebook just be a site used to connect people together? Nothing more, nothing less.

How is sharing financial information helping me to connect with my high school buddies?

sreyaNotfilc··on Facebook’s New Message to WhatsApp: Make Money
I'm wondering if this pressure was in response to the 20% decline on FB stocks. Its as if the shareholders looked at their portfolio in search of companies acquired that could fill that void.
