Is there any cost analyze for using solar panel power for Crypto?

I am installing Solar from Tesla, wonder if I should just use the external power generated for crypto than to send them back to PG&E.

Profitable companies such as MSFT, G, FB, etc likely not in debt nor need the money.

Only the distress companies (Oil, Travel, Restaurant, Airlines) need debt more than anyone else.

Also, what if the cash sink in Intel's fab continue to become a drag for cash on hand and unable to produce any returns on those huge new fab process investments?

3-5 years from now, still 14nm CPU only without any volume productions on 7nm, 10nm? How much can those 14nm 300 Watts CPU can be sold for and who will buy them at that time?

Actually from the past 3-5 process development history of Intel, it is not hard to see what is likely to happen.

Intel can sell x86 with 50-80% margin + 80-90% market share.

Or sell arm compete with TW, China ARM licensee at 10-25% margin for 5-15% market share. And you don't have any competitive advantage like Qualcom with IP on CP.

If you're Intel CEO, how are you going to choose?

srcmap··on Why Windows 95 and 98 would crash after 49.7 days of uptime
Choices are:

Allow Windows 10 auto update but for a chance for it to delete all your profile / data files PERMANENTLY :

Or

Turn off auto update with user control on when is best time to update:

This is happening already - anyone who use Google map has their location data collected for the past 10 years with default setting. Police can issue geofencing warrant against the location/time and Google will share that data.

Maybe law can be created to allow state/local government to collect and use such info when "declaration of local infectious deceases emergency" by state governor. Especially allow for department of public health to access the Google's Sensor Vault data in emergency situation.

I would support that BUT I also understand how that might open the "pandora's box" for all other government requests/laws like the existing geofencing warrant.

srcmap··on Ten-Minute Coronavirus Test for $1
Western countries need to spend more energy on mask productions.

I heard the mask production automation lines cost $50K to $100 in China and TW. Now the price for machines and production materials are 5-10 times the normal.

But once setup, 95% - 99% of the process is automated. There are zero pollution and it is neither labor nor capital intensive. Do need the logistic and abilities to source some raw materials. If setup, the next few months would be like printing $$$$.

TW can make 10 millions masks per day now. China has production line making 110 millions mask per day. They were able mobilized the industries like war time - TW actually send enlist Army personnels to the factory to help out.

That PC is only for controlling this machine and no need to be on internet, right? If so, just config the windows firewall to disconnect it from the internet?

I do that on my home machines. All updates are disable and I manually enable them every 6-12 months to let win10 to go crazy for a day or so and everything is up to day.

One can also monitor the podcast such as "Security Now" to check if the latest windows update processes have any special BSOD or silently / randomly delete all users files/profiles before turn on the update.

srcmap··on Ask HN: How to tell if my Linux server has been infected by a mouse
I used to do the follow to learn more about linux system and how various sw components worked over long period of times on a personal server:

  1) Create git repo, add all /usr/* /bin /sbin /etc to git.
  2) Use utilities to monitor all TCP out going connections to see which apps were connecting to network.
It was a fun exercise to see what components, config files were change over time.

As much as internet Jedi like a free/secure internet, the force of Empires (governments of ru, UAE, cn, US, UK, EU, etc) are striking back.

It is not "some" countries. It is "all" countries - they all feel the power/needs to monitor, control the internet.

I set one up with R pi before.

Use the ubuntu "motion" package and record pic/video when motion is detected.

Use some python script to auto upload new files to google drive. I can use any google drive sw in ios/android to view pictures in some folder. The folder can be shared with family members can be view remotely. Kinda fun project.

Works ok - But it used a lot space. Have to actively manage share folder.

I am looking for similar setup for quite a few of old android phones laying around. Plan to write one myself when I have time....

If anyone know a good solution with old android phone HW + G Drive, please share.

srcmap··on AMD’s Entire Ryzen 9 3950X 16 Core CPU Inventory Sold Out in Japan
Agree.

TSMC amortizes its RD/CapEx/Op costs over Apple, Qualcomm, NVida, Broadcom, Xilinx, etc.

Apple, Qualcomm paid for most of the heavy 7nm RD/Capex long before to AMD's 7nm production commitments. AMD basically got the 7nm production advantage without the RISK on Fab investments like Intel. It was good that the AMD 's board had the foresight to divest fab to Global Foundry a few years back.

Intel has to amortizes its fab cost over Altera and x86 CPU. Altera part is probably trivial. Intel's huge 10nm investment in RD, Capex depending entirely on one x86 product line to recover. When execute well like 15 years before 2017, it was big advantage. Any execution misses, the FAB RD/Cap cost became a liability.

"Only the Paranoid Survive" - Last few years, Intel was definitively not Paranoid enough.
