sravfeyn··on Workflow for iOS
To develop an app like this one needs to know right interfaces that iOS Developer library offers to control other apps.

Suppose I had this idea, how can I figure out the correct API reference documentation. I tried it with various keyword searches and I couldn't find it. I find this the case on any other platform - Windows, Android, and OSX. I wonder how others solve this problem - finding the right reference among ton of documentation.

sravfeyn··on We Can't Trust Uber
> The New Delhi rape case could have just as easily happened to Lyft. The infrastructure for background checks and criminal records in India is more or less nonexistent,

It's not about non-existent prevention mechanisms. It's about how difficult it is to contact Uber (at least in India), whether they took the responsibility of what happened, and whether they are going to invest time to take preventive measures instead of immorally running after competitors in India. Having a bad automated support at a company like Uber that deals with transporting flesh around is a sign of being morally irresponsible.

sravfeyn··on Meditation study shows changes associated with awareness, stress (2011)
Why and in what way is thinking about sensations and one's body different from thinking about past or future?

Aren't there other ways to condition mind to bring back its thoughts away from the Past or Future, why is focusing on breathing the only way that meditation teaches?

sravfeyn··on Make in India
For those looking at the usability of the website, here's little context. It's not a great website. It's a change (in good direction) in the existing India government websites that use yesteryear technologies.
sravfeyn··on Squirt.io – Readability Meets Spritz Speed Reading
Why the fuck are there so many Readability apps coming out now. Why everything on internet is exploding without giving the problem much thought. It's becoming more and more of copycheetahs. Game of 2048 goes multiplier, speed-reading articles are more than 4 suddenly.

Please be of more thoughtful in your creative endeavors. If you are able to produce something like this, you might as well be capable of creating better original ideas.

sravfeyn··on Microsoft to acquire Nokia
This news may sound exciting/disappointing to the developed countries, but it is certainly extremely disappointing for people in third-world countries, especially India.

It is not at all hyperbole to say 'Nokia played a key role in India's mobile penetration'. They sell affordable, reliable and rigid phones for rough use in rural places of India. And I think it's true for most other countries like Africa. On the other hand Microsoft mostly makes premium software and hardware. I don't know any affordable tool(w.r.t developing countries) from Microsoft. This may put Microsoft in a better position in terms of smartphone. But in other terms this may be a step towards 'diminishing power of poor people'.

sravfeyn··on China’s Tencent is giving away 10TB worth of free cloud storage
I can't understand how the math adds up! 10TB harddrive on ebay costs $900[2]. To download 10TB once with standard AT&T 30GB-$300 plan, it costs 3000GB*300/30GB 30k USD! Or may be with some bulk-plans it can go down, but not orders of magnitude. Hard-drive is instantaneous, always available and safer. May be I am having a bad time to figure out the obvious answer, but what is it?

sravfeyn··on Introducing Silvrback: Hosted, Markdown-Powered Blogging
I am very sad that, Medium as a platform is so completely misunderstood here. It's not trying to be a place where writers are the center of attention. It's one of the few attempts, I think is somewhat successful, in democratizing the content, not the writer. I thought Quora was on it back in the day, but it drifted off now, completely.

I am also not sure why anyone who is serious about his personal-branding as to pay $29 would want to stick to a common-theme, especially when there are so many free super-customizable alternatives. People who are serious enough to pay might as well consider paying someone else to design the personal-theme and have it setup with Markdown somewhere for free.

What's even more disheartening is to see someone who is such a skilled person to ram up the themes from Medium and setup a product with such ease, is the person who misunderstood the Medium and add more product-clutter into the market, indifferent to the work of the designers of Medium with a great and noble vision.

Edit: I said 'misunderstood' because of following

> Medium is great for readers but it is bad for writers.

I am sorry, but it's great for writers, you don't need to be among the elite to share an idea with world. And that's something very powerful.

sravfeyn··on Facebook Leads an Effort to Lower Barriers to Internet Access
How do you create a society where organizations would have a vested interest in leading efforts to lower barriers to electricity. Even in present conditions, electricity is after-all a prerequisite to better internet access. I wonder why there are fewer juggernauts looking into electricity than internet.
sravfeyn··on Show HN: TextIt – Visually build SMS applications anywhere in the world
Amazing simplicity in a complex app-builder product, from the surveyor-perspective . From end-user perspective though, I think it's a difficult to do very long surveys through SMS's.
sravfeyn··on Elon Musk to outline 'Hyperloop' idea
It's not just a vague futuristic concept, it's 'a vague futuristic concept of a genius engineer'. There are so many other concepts that don't generate publicity like this.

sravfeyn··on Show HN: Automatic weekly meal planner, also plans your leftovers
It would really help if anybody can link a good guide on basics of nutrition, calories, metabolism and their effects on body, weight. I never cared about these things and I never understood all the calorie calculations on the diet plans or why they should be the way they are. I searched on internet, but these topics are so full of litter. I would appreciate if anyone can link a to genuine nutrition basics.

Edit: It's better if the guide is more general, than american-centric.

sravfeyn··on Light Table 0.4 released
I had done that. Probably I have to restart the system to have Light Table understand the updated PATH.
sravfeyn··on Light Table 0.4 released
I am very excited to play with Python eval on Light Table. I am on Windows. Python PATH is not set. So I had set it in Command-line. cmd was able to execute Python, but light-table is not able to detect Python PATH. How can I set Python PATH in Light Table on Windows?
sravfeyn··on Get that job at Facebook (2012)
Communication from Facebook recruiting team is ZERO after applying. Not even an automated reply.

About a week back, I applied to Facebook after solving a puzzle on their Interviewstreet page successfully within given time.

Sadly I didn't get any kind of acknowledgement from their recruiting team, neither saying I am rejected nor that they have received my application.

sravfeyn··on StarWars + Git logs = StarLogs
There's small problem on how browsers respond, when we change the hash#parameter in the URL and hit ENTER in the sites where DOM is manipulated using AJAX depending on hash-value, like in this site. It doesn't get updated until we hit ENTER for second time in Chrome, reload in Firefox.

I also have a similar site that manipulates DOM depending on hash value. If you are on instamovi.com/#bourne with bourne movies listed...and you change it to instamovi.com/#bond and hit ENTER, there's no change in the DOM. You have to hit ENTER again, then the movie listing changes to Bond movies.

Similar thing happens here on starlogs.net/#repo1 to starlogs.net/#repo2

Any idea how to fix this?

sravfeyn··on URLs are for People, not Computers
On a side-note, I have made a movie web-app where you can just enter movie name into URL to get it's rating & trailer, like www.instamovi.com/#<ANY_MOVIE_NAME_HERE>. It works for keywords as long as they are spelled correct...like http://instamovi.com/#bourne
sravfeyn··on Dear HN "Who's Hiring" responders
Hey, thanks for taking the time to read and give such a valuable insight. Can you tell me what sounded weird. I have made a Google Doc, if you have minute please leave comment in the Doc. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mab-wHgNyTzGGBTdRiiY9yKZ...

I will have it proofread by my friends.

sravfeyn··on Dear HN "Who's Hiring" responders
I should probably post a "Dear HN 'Who's hiring' posters". And put following content.

With the same token that you say HN is not a CraigsList, when an HN-responder puts an effort in going through their product and writing a personal note inquiring about a possible opportunity at their company, posters should have the courtesy to respond to the responder acknowledging that in-spite of their good/bad profile they can't hire him/her.

I know these two advices are from me to you and you to me. All the remaining folks who have been one-liners will continue to be so.

Btw, I am a graduating student from IIT Delhi, who have applied to many startups that interested me with a personal-note and list of projects I have done with clickable-links. While about 10% of posters responded saying that they did like my profile but can't take it further because of visa, remaining 90% never responded.

While I am not the best engineer, when my detailed & clear personal application doesn't get an acknowledgement reply, I can imagine why responders are just sending one-liners. If posters want to hire, they will hire from one-liners. No point of detailed-personal application.

On a side note, my profile with links to projects is https://gist.github.com/sravfeyn/13534c67812183235a2c/ I am hunting for an engineering position at a start-up with product-innovation.

sravfeyn··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2013)

sravfeyn··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (April 2013)
SEEKING WORK - I am graduating student from IIT Delhi, India

Following is my experience and list of projects with links. (The same is on my gist https://gist.github.com/sravfeyn/13534c67812183235a2c )

Some of projects are on [my github](http://github.com/sravfeyn)

------------------------------------------

I shipped products outside of College/Work

------------------------------------------

* I hacked around [our campus shared-ssh spaces](http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3554318) to [automate file-sharing via peer-server-peer](https://github.com/sravfeyn/SparkDC), when the campus LAN was blocked.

* I created an [instant-search for movies](http://instamovi.com), when I realized more movie buffs like myself want quick ratings, trailers for movies as they type in names.

* I fixed [event-publishing in our campus](http://www.iitdevents.appspot.com/SetupCalenders), with an automated event update system, that scans for events on FB pages, Google Calenders of our campus boards.

------------------------------------------

I have worked in a high-tech start-up

-------------------------------------

I worked in a [high-tech Valley based start-up](https://angel.co/hachi) as a tech intern and then as tech consultant when I figured out start-ups are where my solutions can address a million-people's problems.

I pushed code in first week, solved problem of finding network reach (# of people you can connect to using your FB, LI, TW friends) until four degrees. Latter, I PoC-ed a new Architecture for improving search speed (based on six fields in a combined graph of FB, LI, TW. It's an awesome product for networking, you should [check-out](http://gohachi.com)). We brainstormed and after great set of changes from team, started implementing it.

This speed can only be possible at start-up

I loved it and I decided to work for a start-up where the most awesome people solve hardest problems making life simpler and a little magical.

sravfeyn··on Ask HN: Have you ever hired an Indian Fresher for your start-up?
I completely agree with you. My goal is not settling in US. My immediate priority is to work with a company which is doing a fundamental product innovation, which are really rare in India. After sufficient experience, I do have plans to do my own thing in India.

Being from a lower-middle class background, I have my own problems to settle right now. Starting directly with an idea is not going to be a feasible option for me.

Having said that I understand your motivation in telling me to try in India itself. And I will.

sravfeyn··on Ask HN: Have you ever hired an Indian Fresher for your start-up?
I really appreciate your candid advise. I will try my best and then I will try to find a good-startup in India. I just don't want to compromise without trying.

I would just like to add that the projects I have done were not for cv-points, I have started them on my own. Looking that your IITian, I am in those minority at IIT, who really don't care about CV points :).

sravfeyn··on Ask HN: Have you ever hired an Indian Fresher for your start-up?
I would love to talk. Do you have any contact?
sravfeyn··on Ask HN: Have you ever hired an Indian Fresher for your start-up?
Yeah, instamovi renders correctly only on Chrome :(. I had coded the entire CSS myself, which I am not an expert at.

Thanks for sharing info :)

I left you a mail!
