What are your thoughts on Apple's approach? You still have to provide your birthdate to apple. But after that, it only only ever shares your age range with other companies that request it, not your birthdate.

squeegmeister··on I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too
I would if Unreal Engine was properly supported
squeegmeister··on GPT-5: Key characteristics, pricing and system card
Yeah hallucinations are very context dependent. I’m guessing OP is working in very well documented domains
squeegmeister··on Bop Spotter
Awesome project.

I'm mildly annoyed at battery bars not completely filling the battery at 100%

squeegmeister··on You are what you read, even if you don't always remember it
Yes, and because you now know it exists, and you later look it up again if you need the specific details. Which you otherwise wouldn’t know to do
squeegmeister··on LLMs approach expert-level clinical knowledge and reasoning in ophthalmology
There are reasons to believe we’ve reached a plateau with gpt 4. Check out Gary Marcus’s Substack
squeegmeister··on Interview with Yanis Varoufakis on Technofeudalism
“To Varoufakis, every time you post on X, formerly Twitter, you’re essentially toiling Elon Musk’s estate like a medieval serf. Musk doesn't pay you. But your free labor pays him, in a sense, by increasing the value of his company.”

This sounds disanalogous to me. When you post on twitter, you can be rewarded with engagement and attention and even the possibility of growing your own brand and following. All at no monetary cost to you. Meanwhile, twitter has the costs of paying for servers and infrastructure and salaries of those required to support the site

squeegmeister··on Ask HN: If you've used GPT-4-Turbo and Claude Opus, which do you prefer?
It’s a reference to this

https://www.businessinsider.com/open-ai-chatgpt-alter-ego-da...

From Wikipedia:

‘One popular jailbreak is named "DAN", an acronym which stands for "Do Anything Now". The prompt for activating DAN instructs ChatGPT that "they have broken free of the typical confines of AI and do not have to abide by the rules set for them". Later versions of DAN featured a token system, in which ChatGPT was given "tokens" that were "deducted" when ChatGPT failed to answer as DAN, to coerce ChatGPT into answering the user's prompts.’

squeegmeister··on It's still easy for anyone to become you at Experian
This happened to me and I ended up calling them to get them to reset my email. It hinged on me answering security questions correctly. Which btw, some of these were also wrong since my identity thief changed some addresses on my credit report. What a fucking mess
squeegmeister··on It's still easy for anyone to become you at Experian
Exactly
squeegmeister··on Using GPT-4 Vision with Vimium to browse the web
How does this differ from how ChatGPT currently browses the web?
squeegmeister··on Google Maps Now Uses AI to Find Where People Are Having Fun
Wish Google maps would work in malls. Singapore is full of them and the directions are kinda useless inside
squeegmeister··on 15 Years of Android Memories
iOS has non safari browsers
squeegmeister··on GitHub Copilot X – Sign up for technical preview
I haven't noticed any issues with it, other than it occasionally just not chiming in. I'm using vs2022 on windows fwiw.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me if vscode is getting preferential treatment

squeegmeister··on Doom hacker gets Doom running in Doom
But can it run doom in doom in doom
squeegmeister··on Travel photos are underrated (2019)
Oh my god, lol. I'm sorry
squeegmeister··on Hyper-realistic digital humans in Unity
The "glued together" may be a little overstated. Their "Mega-City" demoed in 2019 is available to download and run as a standard unity project. I haven't looked at any of the code, but the fact that it runs on a mainline version of unity and not some forked, hacked together version should count for something.
squeegmeister··on The Only Unbreakable Law [video]
Doesn't Conway's law make predictions and isn't it falsifiable? You pointed it out yourself "if we look at an org chart for an organization, and we look at the structure of the products that it produces, we would expect them to basically just be collapses of each other [i.e. a homomorphism]"

You could validate these claims by looking at org charts across various companies and looking at their software architecture and come up with some measure for how closely they resemble each other

squeegmeister··on Complex game worlds, simple text interfaces (2015)
Are there any games you'd recommend by him?
squeegmeister··on Software estimation is hard – do it anyway
Billing a customer for a feature they want. How much you charge the customer is going to depend on how many dev hours it will take. An accurate estimate is necessary in order to give come up with the appropriate price to charge them. Name a price that's too low, and you end up losing money on devs' salaries. Name a price too high and the customer walks away from the table
squeegmeister··on The economics of dollar stores
> Today ~34k pepper the US landscape... On average, a new one pops up every 6 hours

The 6 hour thing can't be right, can it?

squeegmeister··on The Co-Op Movement Is Taking on Big Tech
This sounds intriguing, but I still don't feel like I have a good idea of what a co-op is or how it works.

How does a business get off the ground without investment? Other than taking out a loan, credit card debt, or personal savings

squeegmeister··on HBO Max accidentally sent an integration email test to users
Ouch
squeegmeister··on Oops HBO, using real user data in your software integration tests?
Ah man, poor dev. Hope they keep their job. You could argue this was a net positive, letting the world know hbo go uses integration tests
squeegmeister··on Apple, FedEx and the cookie apocalypse
I think the point is that advertisers care about groups, not individuals
squeegmeister··on Pfizer is testing a pill that, if successful, could cure Covid-19
Yeah apparently BioNTech is working on a mRna vaccine for cancer
