spraak··on Todo.txt: Future-proof task tracking in a file you control
I use Simpletask too. I still wish for a bit more out of it, but I appreciate the tag/project list and the UX over the official todo.txt Android app
spraak··on Todo.txt: Future-proof task tracking in a file you control
Hmm, I found the Android app lacking - can you link which one you use? I much prefer Simpletask (Dropbox version) which works with the todo.txt format but has neat filter features. I really need to see a list of all my tags of my projects get lost in each other.
spraak··on Smart plastic incineration posited as solution to global recycling crisis
Good to find better ways to deal with the plastic we have, but we should probably just stop making so much conventional plastic.
spraak··on Show HN: Saag as a Service – macronutrient-portioned Indian spinach curry
This is really nice! As a Hindu & vegan I wish I lived in your delivery zone :) (I live way out in the Pacific ocean, though) In any case, cool to see you're trying a more narrow approach, and the website explains things well and looks great. One question I was left with is how big is the portion? I may have missed that. And if this were available to me I'd be eager for the next available item to be chana masala. Thanks for sharing

Isn't it ironic [1], don't you think, that the vegan option has less carbs than the 'keto friendly' option? Tofu has less carbs than milk.

spraak··on Amazon offered ‘Amazon’s Choice’ to vendors who bought ads and lowered prices
Unrelated, but lately I'm frustrated that so many household items I want to buy are mostly available only in some kind of bulk pack. No, I don't want 6 bottles of dish soap if I don't yet know I like it. And it seems sometimes the bulk pack is even cheaper than a single item, like how a round-trip can be cheaper than a one-way. Also weird are the paid shipping options for me, even with Prime - most often if I chose to pay more for shipping it would schedule the package to arrive later than sooner, vs the free shipping being the fastest option. I don't know why I'm even presented with that choice.
spraak··on How Big Data Is Changing the Healthcare Industry
Seems the opposite is more true, i.e. "how healthcare is changing big data". Also I don't see doctors becoming "just as good with data-crunching as they are with medicine" because doctors don't have time and probably don't care as much as perhaps a new role of "healthcare technology data scientist" would
spraak··on Texas Power Prices Briefly Surpass $9k Amid Scorching Heat
Literally pumping heat or cold around the earth, you're saying? That sounds like it could have a disastrous effect on the seasons at best...
spraak··on Extreme climate change has arrived in America
From a few comments below:

> Exxon internal researchers knew about the incoming crisis since 1982.

> ...they started sponsoring anti climate change material producing organizations and supporting its dissemination. A wildly succesful project that has probably paid itself back with a large factor.

So yeah, find a way for lowering emissions to create money and power and then .aybe there would be the motivation to do so.

spraak··on Paternity Leave Was Crucial After the Birth of My Child
At the startup (in the US) I work for I was lucky to have been able to take 12 weeks off at 100% PTO. I can't imagine working somewhere that didn't offer extended paid paternity leave.
spraak··on The fungus that devastates the Cavendish banana has now arrived in Latin America
People are already comfortable and used to other cultivars of other fruits. GMO isn't even necessary here, just other types of bananas.
spraak··on Python Is Eating the World
I feel that way too regarding choosing Typescript. It's a real joy to use TS and I'd be depressed having to ship plain JS to production again.
spraak··on Ask HN: Are Ghosts Real?
I wonder if I'm getting downvoted because of my belief, or because somehow how I've expressed isn't favorable.
spraak··on Ask HN: Are Ghosts Real?
As a Hindu, yes, but I don't pay much attention on the fact. The awareness is confined in the body and freed at death to pursue another body, but sometimes gets distracted or stuck in this world.
spraak··on [dead]
I don't see how he can expect people to take him seriously, but if he's paid off by industry it doesn't matter. Defecation isn't a choice. Medically if you need to poop, holding it until tomorrow is not safe.
spraak··on Missile alerts direct Fort Greely residents and workers to take shelter
I had no idea that the interceptor missiles are so toxic. Can anyone explain further why that is, and why no safer alternatives are available?
spraak··on Regex for Noobs – An Illustrated Guide
Thanks for your post, I learned a lot and I feel excited when I come across an experience to use a regex again to put this into practice.
spraak··on Regex for Noobs – An Illustrated Guide
It's a great way to reinforce your own learning, share what you just learned, and get great feedback (many of the comments in this thread)
spraak··on Regex for Noobs – An Illustrated Guide
Also very helpful to have at least a few good unit tests to show what they should be doing
spraak··on Living Near Trees, Not Just Green Space, Improves Wellbeing
That famous background makes me nauseous ever since the first time I saw it (and not due to the context of being used for XP)
spraak··on Living Near Trees, Not Just Green Space, Improves Wellbeing
> One reason could be that babies around here are (like I was) put into baby trolleys to sleep outside, summer and winter.

Finland? Sweden?

spraak··on Programmers: Before you turn 40, get a plan B (2009)
If the acronym is only about profit then it is both misused and excludes other obvious companies like Microsoft.
spraak··on Programmers: Before you turn 40, get a plan B (2009)
Exactly
spraak··on Programmers: Before you turn 40, get a plan B (2009)
But that highlights the inconsistent usage of the term. Often it's used to just mean "a company with a lot of engineers with similar practices and culture"
spraak··on Programmers: Before you turn 40, get a plan B (2009)
And to be clear, you were a developer and got another development job?

> grinding away at a FANG

I've started to propose we s/FANG/Big N/g "FANG" leaves off other obvious big companies, e.g. Uber, and it wouldn't scale to keep trying to add them to the acronym. Here N is used like when one talks about a list "N items long"

spraak··on Big O Notation – Using not-boring math to measure code’s efficiency
An insider feeling is a strong likelihood
spraak··on Big O Notation – Using not-boring math to measure code’s efficiency
It's wildly misused if the reason that it exists is pay. Even the parent to my comment is talking about interview process; I doubt that varies much from any of the "FANG" companies vs. Microsoft, Uber, etc.
spraak··on Big O Notation – Using not-boring math to measure code’s efficiency
I wish the usage of FAANG would die. Firstly it exlcudes obvious others like Uber, Microsoft, etc. Secondly, and purely aesthetically, it sounds silly. I hereby propose we call such companies the Big N, and I'm definitely open to other ideas.
spraak··on iTerm2 3.3
Because of the touch bar I was motived to switch Esc to Caps Lock (using Karabiner Elements), but I have since switched it over on all my machines (i.e. those without touchbars) because it's so convenient/ergonomic.
