spqr0a1··on American chestnut trees are “technically extinct”
From lab-scale plants it's clear that they are at least as resistant as the chinese chestnut the fungus is from. http://www.esf.edu/chestnut/resistance.htm

Of course the proof is a forest of full grown trees, but there's every reason to expect this method will get us there.

spqr0a1··on American chestnut trees are “technically extinct”
Good news! this article understates the current stage of development for at least one of the reintroduction projects.

A blight resistance gene (oxalate oxidase) has been added by state university researchers in new york. The genetically modified trees are being crossed with pure-bred chestnuts for improved genetic diversity before wider distribution. http://www.esf.edu/chestnut/

The plan is to distribute seeds from these trees within 5 years through a partnership between SUNY-ESF and the NY chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation.

I've committed to planting at least 4500 of these trees (interspersed across 60+ acres) in their native forest setting once available. If you care about the chestnut or ecology but agroforestry isn't your thing, these organizations could really use donations to ensure this project continues.

In principle, low-orbit satellites should be lower latency than copper or fiber over long distance. The speed of light in vacuum being faster than in solids. In addition a satellite network could offer a more direct path (short distance) than intercontinental cables for many locations, further increasing performance.

Have to recommend Blundstone boots. I was concerned that the elastic would wear out but it's been years and looks like it will outlast the tread. They are durable, grip well, waterproof easily, and dressy enough for semi-formal occasions. Warm enough for winter and cool enough for summer too!

Idiosyncratic Drug-induced Liver Injury (DILI) is only 13-20% of all DILI. The other ~80% being pharmacological. About 40% of all acute liver failure is caused by acetaminophen. http://www.nature.com/ajg/journal/v102/n11/full/ajg2007481a....

Meaning a single FDA approved over-the-counter drug is responsible for over 20 times as much liver failure as all dietary supplements. Some regulation may be beneficial but the current policies are clearly suboptimal.

Soil-transmitted helminths infect 2 billion people. http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs366/en/

More than a few will benefit, because in many areas with high infection rate, the majority of children really do have worms. Regarding Ascaris infection specifically: "In areas of poor sanitation virtually 100% of the population harbor the parasite."[Markell & Voge's Medical Parasitology p.241]

spqr0a1··on Solar Now Produces a Better Energy Return on Investment Than Oil
Your comment at the end is on the right track. Annual energy consumption isn't the ideal metric because you can charge a car battery every day. 22,200 GWh is all the storage capacity you'd need with daily charging.

13GWh is way off! 1500GW x 8600h x 0.1 capacity factor = 1,300,000GWh or 1.3e9MWh. Within an order of magnitude of US electricity demand.

Yup, cadherins are transmembrane proteins and the variable domains are exposed on the external surface.
spqr0a1··on The Excitable Mitochondria
It's essential to the growth pattern of dendrites that neurons are able to recognize and avoid themselves. There's evidence that alternative splicing (the genetic differences you mentioned) arose in cadherins before even the immune system. Basically alternative splicing provides each neuron with a random key that has a ~1/30,000 chance of collision.

While a space elevator is constructable on the moon or mars, making one for earth would needs exotic high tensile strength materials that we don't know how to build.

Light bulbs aren't such a clear example. Incandescent filaments are much more efficient at higher temperature but burn out quicker. In the general case, savings from reduced electricity cost more than offset the increased replacemet rate for bulbs in accessible fixtures.

spqr0a1··on Trucks Are Killing Us
Ah, but road transport isn't really shared between commercial and personal transportation. Road maintenance is in large part funded by fuel tax. Fuel use is roughly proportional to vehicle weight at low speed, or frontal area at high speed. While wear to the road is proportional to the fourth power of the axle weight.

So trucking is heavily subsidised by smaller cars. If the costs created by trucking were internalized, the market share in the shipping industry would likely shift considerably toward rail transport.
